Cork native Tully, 54,  was a former chairman of the Cork Branch of the Irish Soccer Referees Society and was on the SSE Airtricity League panel of Elite referees up to a decade ago.

Amongst the highlights of Tom's refereeing career was being appointed fourth official at the 1999 FAI Cup final between Bray Wanderers and Finn Harps while he also officiated at an FAI Intermediate Cup Final.

"I was shocked to hear of Tom's sad passing. He was a great football man and a great character. He was an excellent referee and will be sadly missed," said FAI CEO John Delaney.

He is survived by his wife Anne and three children, David, Theresa and Thomas, parents Paddy and Noreen, brothers Joseph, Tony and Stephen and sister Patricia.

"Tom was an extremely popular referee. He was well liked by all involved in the game both locally and nationally and will be a huge loss to the refereeing community in Cork," said John Ward, FAI Referee National Co-Ordinator.

"He was a great guy and a lovely man. We’ve lost one of the good ones. He extend our deepest sympathies to wife Anne, his children and the rest of his family."
