“What a win, it’s just an amazing feeling,” said the ecstatic Liffey boss.
The enthralling tie finished 2-2 after extra-time, where the Liffey players held their nerve to win the resulting penalty shootout 5-4.
Liffey held the lead twice during the game, and they thought they had it won in extra-time but for a last second equaliser from Cobh striker Conor Meade.
“At the start of the game, I wouldn’t say we were poor but I thought Cobh looked excellent. We found it very hard to get a grip on the game,” explained Young.
“At half-time we changed a few things around, the midfield pushed up and we gave them a little less time.”
The contest was evenly matched throughout, with neither team dominating affairs. It always looked like going down to the wire.
“When you don’t get that extra goal, you’re always liable to let one in and that’s what happened,” said Young.
It’s a second cup success for Liffey in recent years after tasting FAI Junior Cup success against Sheriff YC in 2015. Young credits to his squads’ team spirit for their continued success.
“They just love it here. They would die for each other. They have a great will to win and the camaraderie is unbeatable,” he explained.
Support travelled in numbers to Aviva Stadium, and even with only one area of the stadium open to fans, the atmosphere generated was a credit to each teams travelling support.
“I didn’t think the atmosphere that was in the Sheriff game two years ago could be matched, but it certainly was today,” said Young.
The Liffey squad won’t have much time to celebrate. They play Edenderry Town on Wednesday in a game where victory will see them win the league title to complete the double.
“We will enjoy a drink or two but then it’s back to business on Monday and Tuesday. We have three matches left and we need to win one to win the title,” he added.
