World champions Russia showed their class in the opening game of the tournament for both sides, even though it took them until the second half to break the deadlock.
Ireland's tactics worked well early on and they were able to match their opponents to go in at interval scoreless. But Russia got ahead in the second period with a quick goal.
Still, the Irish side, led by captain James Boyle (above), never gave up and had their moments in the game. And they only conceded a second goal when caught on the counter attack.
While a comeback did not happen, they will look at the positives from this game ahead of the meeting with England.
