Founded in 1948 by Jimmy Walsh, the club has gone from strenth to strength over an illustrious 70 year period. The evening, attended by FAI CEO John Delaney and FAI Board Member Mick Hanley, celebrated the history of the club along with honouring club stalwards with commemorative awards.
The club was a founder member of the Limerick Desmond League in 1955 and became the first winner of the league in its very first season. Newcastle West also has League of Ireland history having been a founder member of the First Division in 1985.
The two clubs in the town, Newcastle West FC and Newcastle Rovers will fully amalgamate this year and proceed as one rather than rivals. The underage section has already successfully merged this season with over 600 players, both male and female, playing from the age of 5 up to youths level. The senior teams will become the last to join forces ahead of the upcoming season.
Saturday night was a wonderful celebration of a remarkable club – and there is no doubt that the now named Newcastle West Town FC will continue to prosper in Limerick.
