Founded in 1994, the club originally entered only one Under-12 team. 27 years later, they now have 16 teams (14 underage boys and girls teams and 2 Senior men's teams).
In 2020, 40 adults, 175 boys and 40 girls registered with the club. The Senior teams compete in the CCFL and the boys and girls in the Longford District Schoolboys and Girls League.
UCL Harps take their name from the three Provinces, Ulster, Connacht and Leinster. Their players come from Cavan, Leitrim, Longford, which makes the club unique as it brings together children from a wide geographical area.
The club's pitch is located in Dernaferst, Lough Gowna, Co. Cavan. For years, they rented fields for training and matches including Moyne Community School pitch and their Sports Hall,
Abbeycartron, Longford and also Lebeen Park, Aughnacliffe.
In 2012, the club purchased a site in Dernaferst, which was, with the help of three Sports Capital Funding grants developed by Hyland Turfcare into two full-sized pitches, which were
opened in September 2017.
Through IPB Community Funding UCL were able to erect fencing and ball netting around the pitch. Sports Capital funding in 2018 allowed the club to start the first phase of building the clubhouse. Sports Capital Funding was applied for last year, as the club hope to continue with Phase 2 of the clubhouse.
Numerous players who played with the club are now in the League of Ireland, including Diarmuid Boylan (Longford Town), Tristan Noack-Hofmann, Evan O Connor, Leah Brady and Kayla Brady (Athlone Town).
Dearbhla Bryne, Leah Brady and Kayla Brady have also represented Ireland and underage level too.
The club continue to perform at a high level with players regularly selected for the Longford Schoolboys and Girls League's Gaynor Cup and Kennedy Cup squads.
In August 2015, they hosted The Jamie Carragher 23 Foundation Soccer School with 300 children attending. That weekend a banquet, was also held locally for supporters to meet the Liverpool legend.
Since the opening of the new pitch, UCL Harps host a three-day Summer Camp with great success.
The current status of the club is only possible due to the support of the Club members, coaches and the endeavours of the Club officers from commencement to date. The club has all the
infrastructure and support network required in order to continue to flourish for the next generation.
The FAI Club Mark is free and optional for clubs and aims to:
• Improve the management of clubs ‘off the field’
• Establish and promote best practice
• Empower and support clubs
• Recognise and reward clubs for achieving high standards
• Increase a club’s capacity to operate effectively and grow football in communities throughout Ireland.
