Founded in 1990 to provide regular soccer training and competition for young people in a rural area of north Mayo, the Club began with 16-boys and two coaches and played at Under-15 level in the Mayo Youths competitions.
The Club’s home ground is Kilmurry Community Pitch which is situated 5km south of Crossmolina. Its location is reflected in the Club’s new crest – beside Kilmurry Church between Nephin mountain and Lough Conn .
From starting off with one boys’ team the Club has grown considerably in the last 30 years. It now enters thirteen boys’ teams and four girls’ teams in Mayo Youths, Connacht FA and SFAI competitions for all ages from Under-12 to Under-17 .The Club also runs a very popular weekly Academy for Under-8s and Under-10s . Every year the Club hosts an FAI Summer Soccer School for over 100 boys and girls. There are now over 250 members in the Club who are provided with high quality coaching by 27 fully qualified coaches, many of whom are former Kilmurry Youths players. The catchment area of the Club has also grown from originally being only Crossmolina parish to currently including many parts of north Mayo.
The first big event in the Club’s history occurred in 1992 when it hosted two teams from New York as part of the Mayo Youths Liberty Cup competition. This event helped to raise the profile of the Club and led to great support from the local community. A few years later, in 1998 the Club undertook its’ first overseas trip when an Under-14 boys’ team travelled to Christ the King FC in Coventry. There have been other trips since then the most recent being in March 2019 when an Under-16 girls’ team visited Liverpool.
KIlmurry Youths FC has been very successful over the years winning Mayo Youths League and Cup competitions in all age groups. Some recent successes include the Club’s Under-12 boys and Under-16 girls teams reaching the last 16 in the SFAI Cup in 2019 and the Under-16 boys doing the double of Mayo Premier League and Cup in 2018 . Two of the Club’s players have played internationals for Ireland – Rachel Kearns at Under-19 level and Annie Gough at Under-17 level.
Over the last 30 years the Club has enjoyed wonderful support from so many people and organizations it would be impossible to mention them all. Kilmurry Youths FC wishes to thank everyone who has been involved in any way with the development of the Club. It looks forward to continuing to provide high quality training and competitive games for its’ members in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
