After fighting back to draw 1-1 with the same opposition last Sunday, Dave Bell's team showed a lot of character to match up to a competitive team in what turned out to be a tightly-contested game.

Bell had intended to use the two friendly games to prepare his squad for their upcoming UEFA Elite Phase European Championship qualifiers and he had plenty of reasons to be upbeat in the aftermath.

A Leanne Kiernan strike stood out from the first game - along with some slick passing moves and excellent organisational play - but the second outing proved to be a different test on Tuesday morning.

The same hallmarks of Bell's philosophy could be seen as Ireland played in a positive manner, consistently stretched their opponents with neat passing, and took aim at goal whenever in sight of the target.

Midfielder Alex Kavanagh let fly with a couple of efforts in the first half, while Tiegan Ruddy tried her luck with a half volley after the break and Lauren Kelly almost scored from a header.

Ireland largely controlled the tempo of the game and kept Poland on the backfoot, particularly when Heather Payne was able to spin and run at her marker in wide positions.

Bell's team almost grabbed a winning goal late on when Kavanagh's corner kick fell to Ruddy but her shot was blocked and Niamh Farrelly's overhead kick from the rebound was off target.

The next item on this team's agenda is a trip to France for three crucial Elite Phase qualifiers in March. Judging by these two friendly games, they are moving in the right direction to be ready for those fixtures.
