Women's Play Off - Places 9-16:
Ireland 0 USA 1 (S Schweiss 11).
Luck again deserted the Ireland women's side at the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea when they suffered a frustrating defeat to the USA in their play off tie for places 9-16.
Sarah Schweiss beat goalkeeper Niamh Reid Burke after 11 minutes with a well taken goal that proved just about enough for the USA girls to take the game.
After having a large portion of the play throughout the game the Irish side failed to hit the target despite Claire O'Riordan, Ciara Grant and Emma Hansberry all having good opportunities to beat the impressive USA 'keeper Rowan Frederiksen.
It had been the same story for Ireland in their three Group A games as a lack of sharpness up front meant they could only muster two goals in total with both coming from Wexford Youths girl O'Riordan.
Assistant coach Gerard Dunne summed up the squads frustration as the side now prepare for their next fixture against Columbia on Friday in the play off for places 13-16.
'We were by far the better team but we just couldn't convert our possession into goals. I think we had four good chances but sadly none of the hit the target' commented Dunne.
While the Women's semi finals on Friday will see Russia face Canada and Japan take on France.
