Cp v Britain

Just 22 seconds where on the clock when Great Britain opened the scoring, Jack Rutter’s strike finding the net through a crowded Irish defence and keeper Brian McGillivary’s legs.

Great Britain doubled their advantage with nine minutes on the clock after Tomiwa Badun had adjudged to bring Rutter down in the box.

Rutter initially converted from the spot, however referee Hector instructed a retake. McGillivary saved Rutter’s retake only for Michael Barker to send the rebound home.

The Irish keeper then produced a super save to keep Sean Highdale’s strike out. At the other end Giles Moore went at full stretch preventing Badun’s drive.

Towima Badun was unlucky not to find the British net on 15 minutes. Gary Messett’s exquisite cross field ball finding Badun, his powerful shot beating Moore but crashing off the crossbar.

Great Britain struck twice in second half injury time to take a 4-0 half time lead, where lady luck failed to shine on the Irish team once more.

David Porcher’s drive coming back off the post only to strike the hapless Luke Evans and spin into an empty net, nothing the Irish captain could do about that.

James Blackwell then rubbed salt into the Irish wounds moments later, Porcher again Ireland’s tormenter finding Blackwell free in the box and driving the ball into the bottom corner.

Joseph Markey came close to getting Ireland on the scoresheet 14 minutes into the second half when his looping free kick came off the cross bar.

Conor Tuite landed his first goal of Rio 2016 with 58 minutes on the clock, having combined with Gary Messett whose effort was kept out by British keeper Moore.

Tuite was quick to follow up on the loose ball and head the ball past Moore to make it 4-1.

The celebrations didn’t last long however with Sean Highdale making it 5-1 in the final minute of normal time with a sweet finish below McGillivary.

The result didn’t dampen the Irish fans who burst into a chorus of ole, ole during the game.

The Irish fans included 40 young players from the Barreira do Vasco favela whom were brought to game by the Irish embassy in Brazil and Paralympics Ireland.

Ireland will play their final game of Rio 2016 on Wednesday against the USA in a position playoff for seventh and eighth place.
