Jason Donohue’s side faced the Poles in their first game of the season and the Irish Head Coach will be looking for his players to learn from their first taste of the youngest international level.

The Irish looked bright early on with Troy Parrott having a shot saved in the opening minutes but the Poles also threatened in the first half with Dawid Rezaejan shooting narrowly over then Bartosz Zynek firing across the face of goal.

Good play by Cian Kelly created a chance for Festy Ebosele but unfortunately his shot went wide at the far upright.

In the 57th minute Sean Kennedy did well to carve out an opportunity for himself but his strike was just over.

Conor Carty had the ball in the Polish net in the 60th minute but was flagged offside.

"We started off well but then Poland had a spell of good possession and we defended really well. We got in at half-time and tweaked a few things. When the nerves were gone we played very well in second half," said Donohue.

"It was the first game at this level for both sides so naturally there will be nervy performances. I was happy that we created chances but unfortunately couldn't score. The disallowed goal was a marginal offside call. The players afterwards were reasonably pleased with how they did but know they've something to build on for the second game now."

The sides will meet again at the same venue on Thursday (3.00pm Irish).

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: Harry Halwax, Alex Dunne, James Furlong, Cian Kelly, Brandon Holt, Festy Ebosele, Ademipo Odubeko, Troy Parrott, Sean Kennedy, Timi Sobowale, Seamus Keogh. Subs: Cormac Moore for Kelly 20 mins; Josh Girugi for Ebosele 45; Conor Carty for Odubeko 54; Ronan McKinley for Keogh 66.
