Gaynor Tournament preview

Twenty Under-13 teams from across the country will gather at the University of Limerick to compete in the prestigious tournament that has been running for two decades.

The Under-15 competition will take place from June 28 to 30 at the same venue, along with the Under-12 contest.

Results in the qualifying rounds of the tournament decided how the teams would be seeded for the draw, which took place in Limerick on May 1.

The initial group games get going at 10.30am on Saturday morning and continue through to Sunday. Five different finals are set for the afternoon of bank holiday Monday, culminating in the prestigious Gaynor Cup being contested at 1.30pm.

She said: “I am very proud to be involved in the Fota Island Resort FAI Gaynor Tournament. It is a tournament with a proud tradition and we are all very much looking forward to this year’s competition at the University of Limerick, which is a fantastic venue. The tournament has been on the go now, in one form or another, for 20 years and in that time it has gone from strength-to-strength.”

REPORT: Jack Taylor brace secures U-21 victory

Played at the FAI National Training Centre, the behind-closed-doors fixture was a full 90-minute match as Ireland continue their preparations for the UEFA European Championships qualifiers against Denmark and Gibraltar, and the U-21s prepare for the Toulon Tournament.

After a goalless first-half, Scott Hogan opened the scoring for the senior team before Barnet midfielder Jack Taylor equalised from close range for the U-21s just a minute later. With the match heading for a draw, Taylor scored his second goal of the game as his 25-yard deflected effort found its way past goalkeeper Sean McDermott in the final minute of the game.

Speaking after the match, Ireland manager Mick McCarthy was quick to praise the performance of the U-21s and believes it was a worthwhile exercise.

"They played well, we had plenty of chances to score but then they won it with a deflected goal. I thought Conor Kearns was excellent, he made four or five really good saves, maybe we should have put them away but they were excellent saves," said McCarthy.

"We made changes at half-time and it was about getting minutes into the legs for the players, even if it meant playing a few of them out of position. The real plus point is that nobody got injured, everyone got 45 minutes and were made to work hard which is great for us.

"And I hope, it makes the players realise how difficult the next two games are going to be, because the Under-21s played well and that was hard work for the team today."

With the U-21 squad set to fly to France for the Toulon Tournament on Saturday, manager Stephen Kenny was delighted with the application of his young squad.

"We've had eight players come into the squad for the first time and we played two different XI's, so it was two very good performances from both teams in each half," said Kenny.

"We were looking for a high level of performance and obviously, to get through the game without injury, so it was a great exercise for both teams. It is up a couple of levels playing the senior team so they acquitted themselves really well.

"We've got tough opposition next week, China and Mexico are bringing their Olympic squads so we've got to get ready for that test and this was the perfect preparation for that."

Callum O'Dowda Interview

The Bristol City attacker has experienced a stop-start international career since making his senior debut in May 2016, but he is keen to 'kick on' and make a bigger impact in the green jersey.

O'Dowda enjoyed the recent training camp in Portugal because it allowed him to build up fitness following injury and to slot back into the squad amongst his international team-mates.

"It was tough, but good. Obviously I had an injury towards the back end of the season and managed to get fit. But now it's about getting the work in our legs," O'Dowda told FAI TV.

"Match fitness is a totally different thing and obviously you get that from playing games. We put in a lot of hours doing worthwhile sessions in Portugal but now it's about getting game-time and doing enough to prove to the manager that you deserve to play.

"It's been very important. Going out to Portugal was a change of scenery, but it was more about getting in with the boys as early as we can. Everyone is feeling good, everyone is doing well, and everyone is looking sharp at the moment," he said.

Aside from fitness, the most important aspect of the training camp for O'Dowda was having the opportunity to impress McCarthy. The former Under-21 star missed the EURO 2020 qualifiers against Gibraltar and Georgia in March, so he was keen to catch the eye in training.

"I don't know him as well as I would want to but even when I was injured on the last trip I still came over to introduce myself to him and spend a couple of days with the staff. It's also important for the manager and the staff to get to know us as well, which is why the training camp worked so well," he explained.

While he was frustrated watching Ireland claim two victories in their opening games due to being injured, O'Dowda was enthused by the attacking style that McCarthy was attempting to implement.

For someone who comes alive in the final third of the pitch - in an attacking sense - the approach was something that excited the versatile attacker and he wants to break into the starting XI to show just what he can contribute.

"That is way I want to play. I want to be getting into the areas to score goals. I think I've shown that at times this season with my club and I want to put that into practice with Ireland," he said.

"I know that I've just turned 24 but I think that I still have a lot of potential to kick on. There is still a lot more to come from myself.

"Whether that is left wing, right wing or through the middle, I think that I can use my pace to get in behind and be more affective there. I'm at my best when running with the ball and trying to get past people.

"This season I've noticed how quick I actually am and that is what I need to use on the pitch. I know that there is still a lot more to come."

The Republic of Ireland - who were the only team to qualify having won each of their six games - were paired with Czech Republic, France, and Norway in Group B. While in Group A, hosts Armenia were joined by Italy, Portugal, and Spain.

The tournament will run from July 14-27 and it will be Mohan's second experience of UEFA competition having previously guided the Ireland Under-17s to the finals in Bulgaria in 2015.

"We are delighted to be one of the final eight teams in this tournament. There will be no easy games at the finals and we know that a big challenge is ahead of us, but it's one that we are excited by," said Mohan.

"I've seen Norway play in a tournament in Spain recently and they have done really well - they qualified for the Under-20 World Cup. Then you have Czech Republic who were in a group with a very good England team, while France are always strong at this level.

"We will go into greater depth with our analysis of the teams over the coming weeks and we will have all of our homework done. But we have proved that we have a right to be here and it's up to us to make the most of it when the games come around.

"I had a chance to see the facilities and team hotel in Armenia, so that was good. From right now, though, we have to adopt a new mindset and focus on our preparations."

When Ireland were last involved in this tournament - in 2011 - they reached the semi-finals and four members of Paul Doolin's squad went on to earn senior caps, while two more have earned call-ups.

In qualifying for this year's finals, Troy Parrott was joint third top scorer with four goals, which included a hat-trick against Bosnia & Herzegovina in the Qualifying Round.

Mohan will get his squad together for a three-day training camp in late June before selecting his final panel to travel to Armenia.

2019 Gaynor day 1

This year the prestigious tournament will be played over two weekends – the Under-15s will compete at the end of June.

Today saw 20 games take place as every team in the competition played twice to complete Rounds 1 and 2 of the group stages and the Trophy.

In Group 1 Midlands and MGL South can only be separated on goal difference with both sides having 100 per cent records after the first two games, Waterford and Limerick County complete that group.

MGL North top Group 2 with two wins from two, while Mayo have one win and South Tipperary and Wexford both have one point.

It’s another tight affair at the top of Group 3 as Galway and Sligo/Leitrim both have six points, North Tipperary and Inishowen are also in that group.

And in Group 4, it’s still all to play for Cork and Donegal who have six points a-piece and are on the same goal difference, they are joined in that section by Limerick Desmond and Kildare.

In the trophy competition, its NECSL who lead the way with six points from the six on offer, Clare secured one win, with Longford and Kerry on a point each.

It was an extremely competitive day of action, but was marked by a sense of fair play, with no referee showing a card on day one.

Sunday will see all Round 3 games take place, along with the semi-finals of each competition.

Ireland U-21: Adam Idah ready for the next level

Stephen Kenny's Ireland U-21s side are set to take on China U-22 in their opening Group C fixture at Stade de Lattre de Tassigny, with kick-off at 2.30pm (3.30pm local time).

Idah enjoyed a fantastic start to U-21 life in his first appearance with the group when he notched an impressive brace in March's 3-0 win over Luxembourg at Tallaght Stadium in the UEFA European Championships qualifying.

The Norwich City forward is set to play an important role in the Toulon Tournament for Ireland and the former College Corinthians man can't wait to represent his country in the prestigious tournament.

"It's always an honour to represent your country and to be selected for the tournament is incredible, and I'm really looking forward to getting started," said the 18-year old.

"It was a great experience for me to come into the squad in March and I was delighted with the way I started for the team. I'm always confident in my ability and it was great to score the two goals.

"It's now important I push on and take the chances I've been given. It's going to be a tough game and a tough tournament for us, but it will be a great opportunity for us to show what we can do and bring that into the games in the European Championships qualifying."

China U-22 are currently preparing for their Tokyo 2020 qualifying tournament in January next year and the squad, who are managed by Guus Hiddink, have already played 13 games since September 2018 in preparation for the tournament.

China are set to be slightly older than the Ireland U-21 squad, with a number of players in the Irish squad promoted from the U-19 side, but Idah doesn't believe the age difference will be a factor in the match.

"We've got great belief in the group and training has gone really well since we met up on Tuesday. We played the senior team on Thursday and it was good to get those minutes, and we did really well and competed," continued Idah.

"We're not thinking about them being older than us, we're confident in our abilities and we've got a lot of talent in the group as well so that's what we need to think about.

"We're really looking forward to it, it'll be difficult with the conditions as well as it will be very hot, but we're ready for the challenge and can't wait to get started."

REPORT: Ireland 4-1 China - Winning start in Toulon

Stephen Kenny's side cruised to victory over the China U-22 side with a brace from Adam Idah, both scored from the spot, and goals from Zach Elbouzedi & Aaron Connolly.

Ireland were ahead within 33 seconds and China's first touch of the ball was to pick it out of the net after Elbouzedi's brilliant finish. Ireland worked it neatly down the left and after fantastic work by Connolly, his low cross was left by Idah for the Waterford attacker, who finished off the bar.

It got even better for Ireland just seven minutes later. With their second attack of the game, Connor Ronan's free-kick was cleared but recycled back to Dara O'Shea and his header found Connolly to finish.

Ireland didn't have it all of their own way and China found a way back into the game as Li Yang headed home from a left-sided corner in the 18th minute.

After the break, Stephen Kenny's side were disciplined and ruthless, as they went on to score two more goals, both from the penalty spot. Ten minutes after the break, Elbouzedi's cross struck the arm of the defender and Idah stepped up to place his penalty into the bottom left-hand corner.

Ireland sealed the win and completed the scoring with ten minutes remaining. Once again, China were penalised for handball and Idah made no mistake from the spot to clinch his second goal of the game, and complete a fantastic victory.

"We're delighted to start the tournament with a win, it's huge credit to the players who have worked really hard since coming into camp on Tuesday," said U-21 boss Stephen Kenny.

"This Chinese team have had some good performances and we've watched them play very well, so the goals were at critical times for us and maybe made it look easier than it could have been.

"We've got great Irish players and we really want them to show the potential that they've got, their ability and I think we can take great encouragement from what we've seen today. We've got Mexico next and that will be a really tough match, but we can take a lot of confidence into Tuesday."

Republic of Ireland: Kelleher (GK), O'Connor, Leahy, Masterson, O'Shea, Coventry, Molumby (C) (Lennon 87), Ronan (Knight 62), Elbouzedi, Connolly (Power 77), Idah (Drinan 81).

Ireland U-21: Leahy confident ahead of Mexico test

Ireland are set to face Mexico at Stade Parsemain at 6.30pm (7.30pm local time) in their Group C encounter after securing an impressive victory over China in their opening match. Zack Elbouzedi's first-minute strike was quickly followed by Aaron Connolly's neat finish before two second-half Adam Idah penalties sealed a 4-1 victory for Stephen Kenny's team.

Mexico U-23, who were finalists in this competition last year and have retained the vast majority of their squad for this year's tournament, opened their tournament with a 2-0 win over Bahrain. Having played a major part in their opening victory, Ireland U-21 defender Leahy is confident Ireland can get a result against the Mexicans.

"It was a fantastic victory against China so we've got to take that confidence and momentum into the game against Mexico, and believe we can get a result from it," said Leahy.

"It is going to be a tough game but I think the first game showed how well we've prepared for the tournament and we're doing all the same things for the Mexico game. Training has been really good and we've recovered from the game so we're ready.

"We showed in the game against China that we can score goals so it's important we keep the goals out the other end and let the lads up front do what they can do. It's going to be great for us to test ourselves against this type of opposition."

Mexico U-23 are currently preparing for their Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualifying tournament in October 2019, having won the Gold Medal at the Olympics in 2012.

Leahy is one of six SSE Airtricity League players in the squad and he believes that seeing so many players from the league represented in the squad is testament to the rising standard of the domestic game in Ireland.

"It's great for the league and it shows where the league is going, the quality is improving and it gives the home-based lads a great opportunity," continued Leahy.

"When I came back from England, I didn't see it as a negative, just a bounce board to kick on again and I've really enjoyed playing in the league, and it's given me this opportunity now.

"There are six of us in the squad from the league so it really shows that the league is an option for players who want to progress to international level and that's great for the game."

REPORT: Ireland 0-0 Mexico - Ireland continue unbeaten

Ireland had the better of the chances but were unable to break-down last year's finalists at the Stade Parsemain to earn an impressive point.

Captain Jayson Molumby was the first to test the Mexican goalkeeper Jose Hernandez as his 20-yard effort was well parried in the seventh minute before Adam Idah had the best chance of the game ten minutes later.

Ireland won the ball high up the pitch and the influential Connor Ronan found space on the right to find Idah in the area but after a brilliant first touch, he dragged his shot wide of the target.

Just past the half-hour, Ireland had another major chance to open the scoring. It was Ronan again who found space on the right and found the on-rushing Simon Power on the left but his shot was straight at the keeper from the edge of the area.

It was a second-half of few chances as Mexico had their only real chance of the game in the 61st minute. Dara O'Shea fouled Fernando Beltran on the edge of the area and from the resulting free-kick, Jairo Torres' strike hit the bar.

Five minutes later, Molumby had another long-range effort which went narrowly wide. It was a tense final 10 minutes where both sides had chances but the game ended goalless to secure a point for Stephen Kenny's side. If Ireland beat Bahrain in the final Group C fixture on Sunday, Ireland will be guaranteed a semi-final spot.

"We're disappointed not to win. We created a number of chances and we felt we should have taken one of them," said U-21 boss Stephen Kenny.

"Mexico were last year's finalists and they've come here with the team for the Olympics so we've got to be happy with the way we've performed and I'm really proud of the way the players have taken to the challenge of the tournament.

"We need to recover now and make sure we're at our best for the Bahrain match. The players have done brilliantly to get us into a position to qualify and we'll be ready for the Bahrain match on Sunday."

A header from Shane Duffy in the final five-minutes cancelled out Pierre Emile Hojbjerg’s opener ten-minutes earlier.

The draw leaves Ireland on seven points, five ahead of Denmark, but a game more played.

After 20-minutes, Ireland came close to opening the scoring. A free-kick on the left from Conor Hourihane, was met by Shane Duffy at the back post, but the defender was unable to score  acrobatically with his back turned to goal,

Both sides started brightly in the second-half with Denmark’s Yussuf Poulsen coming close twice, and James McClean forcing Kasper Schmeichel into a fine save.

The opening goal came 15-minutes from time, when substitute Pierre Emile Hojbjerg scored. The striker’s late run into the box, saw him head the ball into the bottom left corner, beating Darren Randolph.

The visitors silenced the partisan Parken crowd in the final five-minutes when Duffy got on the end of a pinpoint Alan Judge cross to earn a valuable draw.
