Debut was perfect birthday present for Moloney

Moloney played the full 90 minutes in the 0-2 defeat by Austria and her assured performance earned her many plaudits as she finally achieved a life-long ambition to play at senior level for Ireland.

A member of the Ireland U17 squad that reached the European Championship final and the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup in 2010, Moloney had had to bide her time for his first cap but admitted she was still surprised when Ronan told her she would be playing in Ireland’s Cyprus Cup opener.

“If I’m honest, I welled up a little bit. I got teary,” recalled Moloney. “It’s a massive thing for me having come through all the age groups. Sue said I was starting and then she said: ‘You look shocked’. I genuinely was shocked, but obviously delighted.

“I was really nervous going into the game. I thought we played really well. I tried to do what was asked of me in the meeting beforehand. The goals were one on ones which are hard to deal with. I was just delighted to make a save in the second half because they got three chances and scored two of them.”

English-born Moloney qualifies for Ireland through her father’s parents who hailed from Cavan and Tipperary and her only disappointment was that her dad wasn’t in Cyprus to see her debut.

“I am a bit disappointed that my dad couldn’t be here. He keeps texting me saying how proud he is. He comes to nearly all the games but couldn’t get to Cyprus so he’s gutted he didn’t see it. But he is absolutely delighted for me.”

While a lot of her underage colleagues have broken into the senior team and started collecting caps, Moloney has had to bide her playing understudy to Ireland’s legendary goalkeeper Emma Byrne.

“I guess at the start when you come into the squad you are just happy to be in the squad. I looked up to Emma Byrne from a young age so it was great to be working with her. Over the time as I got called into more squads and it got longer and longer, I wondered would it ever happen. But Sue spoke to me about a few things she would like me to work on and now I’ve done it. It has been worth the wait, that’s probably the best way to describe it.”

Moloney became a full-time professional over the winter as Reading get ready to start their first season in England’s top flight following a successful promotion campaign last year and she believes it can only help her.

“Being in a professional environment will hopefully help me to push on. It’s a step up for us. A lot of us have gone professional so we are in training every day sometimes twice a day. There is more strength and conditioning, more recovery and stuff like that now. It is going to be a massive year now for us and our main aim is to stay in that league because, for most of us, that’s our job now.”

Ireland will face Italy in their second game at the Cyprus Cup on Friday afternoon in Larnaca (15:30 Irish Time) and Moloney hopes they can start turning the performances into points.

“All of the girls are looking to get back on track with a win and carry on the good performance that we had against Austria and hopefully build on it and take it on into Italy tomorrow.”

WNT face tough test against Italy

After opening with a 0-2 defeat to Austria on Wednesday, the Irish will be get their tournament back on track but they will face a tough test against a side that is currently ranked 13th in the world and seventh in Europe.

Manager Sue Ronan won’t finalise her team until close to kick-off as she assesses how those who played on Wednesday have recovered from their exertions as well as allowing some knocks and niggles picked up in that game to clear.

But, with an intensive programme of four games in eight days, Ronan has indicated that she will change the line-up for the Italian game.

“I will be making changes in order to freshen things up but it will be case of trying to get the balance right with the number of experienced players  given that we are playing one of the best teams in Europe and the top-ranked side in this tournament,” said Ronan.

The Irish manager will be looking for her side to build on the display against Austria and learn the lessons from that game.

“As a team, we played really well on Wednesday. However, some bad decision making, at both ends of the pitch, let us down.”

Italy also began their Cyprus Cup campaign on Wednesday and started with a win as they defeated Hungary 2-0.

McCabe's wonder goal earns WNT draw with Italy

Ireland had appeared destined for their second defeat of the tournament when Italy took the lead in the 86th minute through Marta Carissimi. The Italian bundled the ball home after Niamh Reid Burke had pulled off a brilliant save to keep out a powerful header from Luisa Pugnali who was then sent off in the 90th minute for a second yellow card.

However, the draw was no more than Ireland deserved in a keenly contested game where they created several good chances.  Aine O’Gorman shot just wide in the first half following some good build-up play, while in the second period Julie Ann Russell twice went close and Megan Connolly and Sophie Perry both had free kicks saved by the Italian goalkeeper Sabrina Tasseli.

Ireland scored what looked like a perfectly good goal in the 54th minute when O’Gorman blasted home a low cross from Perry, but the goal was disallowed for a dubious offside against Perry.

After the game Ireland manager Sue Ronan said she felt that draw was the least Ireland deserved from the match.

“It was another great performance by the team and we fully deserved to get something from the game.  We should have been ahead before Italy scored as we had created the better chances, so I’m very pleased with the character and determination the players showed to get the equaliser after conceding so late,” said Ronan.

“We have worked extremely hard this week yet haven’t always got the rub of the green in our games, having a perfectly good goal disallowed for offside in both matches. But taking a point from Italy, who are favourites for this tournament and ranked 19 places above us in the world rankings, will give us lot of confidence going forward.”

“The equaliser was a great individual effort from Katie McCabe, something we’ve seen from her at underage level over the past few years.  It’s her first international goal at senior level but I think it will be the first of many as she’s an outstanding talent.”

The Irish now face Hungary on Monday in Paralimni in their final Group A game. The Hungarians, who were beaten 2-0 in their opening game by Italy, lost 2-1 today against Austria.

Republic of Ireland: Niamh Reid-Burke (Shelbourne), Sophie Perry (Brighton & Hove Albion), Louise Quinn (Eskilstuna United), Niamh Fahey (Chelsea), Savannah McCarthy (Glasgow City); Diane Caldwell (Kóln), Karen Duggan (UCD Waves),  Ruesha Littlejohn (Glasgow City);  Julie-Ann Russell (UCD Waves), Megan Connolly (Florida State University), Aine O’Gorman (UCD Waves). Ideal start for Connolly and McCarthy

IMG_9064.JPG

The two 18-year-olds were included by Sue Ronan in the Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team line-up for yesterday’s Cyprus Cup game with Italy and they played their part in an excellent Irish performance which eventually earned a well-deserved draw against the tournament favourites and world No.13.

“We started together as U15s and it nice to have gone through the age groups together and have a familiar face around all the time. Both of us are in the same sort of situation trying to get first our first cap, trying to get our first start so it is nice to experience it together,” said Connolly.

While Connolly made her senior debut in January against world champions USA in San Diego, McCarthy had to wait until this week, but, as sometimes happens, everything came at once for her. Since Sunday, she has played three games for club and country and in the process has made her Glasgow City debut, her WNT debut and her first senior international start.

“To get my first cap and first start was pretty amazing and making my debut for Glasgow as well has made it a week to remember. Since I was a young age I have dreamt of getting my first senior cap and it was really good to do it this week,” said McCarthy.

Connolly also came on as a substitute against Austria and was delighted to be handed the job of leading the Irish attack against the Italians.

“It was a great to get that first start because once I had got my first cap that became the next objective. Now I want to get my first goal and I hope it will be the first for many for Ireland.”

While both will be focused on Ireland’s two remaining Cyprus Cup games on Monday against Hungary and the positional play-off on Wednesday, they admit that will have one eye on Portugal where Dave Connell’s U19s are playing two warm-up matches on Tuesday and Thursday as part of the preparation for next month’s UEFA European Women’s U19 Championship Elite Phase in Dublin against Germany, Poland and Azerbaijan.

“They are two important games for the squad because it is going to be a tough group to get out of next month. Hopefully, the experience we are getting here with the senior squad will help us when we return to the U19s,” said McCarthy, who is the U19 team captain.

But, for now, the minds are on Hungary and the opportunity to build on yesterday’s confidence-boosting performance and result against the Italians.

“We didn’t deserve to lose to Austria because we played very well and we could have beaten Italy because we created some great chances and a perfectly good goal disallowed. We will be looking to maintain that level of performance against Hungary and hopefully get a win as well,” said Connolly.

Ireland will play Hungary on Monday afternoon in the Tasos Marko Stadium in Paralimni at 15:30 (Irish time) and once the final group standings are confirmed they will play their opposite number from Group B in the positional play-offs on Wednesday.

Having come up the international under-age ranks together, it was perhaps fitting that Savannah McCarthy and Megan Connolly should make their first starts at senior level in the same game.

Ten teams have made it to five finals which will be played over Tuesday and Wednesday before culminating with the flagship Colleges FAI Umbro Cup Final at the RSC on the last day.

The Waterford IT Sports Campus in Carriganore will host the four other finals and the Bob Eustace Cup and Shield plus the Umbro Plate taking place on Tuesday, while the 'B' Team Cup Final will go ahead the following day at 12pm.

Joe O'Brien, Colleges FAI Chairman expressed his appreciation to Waterford IT's Sports and Societies Officer Robin Croke for his help in the organising of the two days of the finals.

"We are absolutely delighted that the finals are being hosted by Waterford IT. Waterford is a great football city and the football club in the Institute reflects that with Robin Croke, Paul O'Brien and John Douglas all continuing to do great work with the players," explained O'Brien.

"Over the past number of years we have gone back to having the Colleges FAI Cup Finals hosted in our member colleges. We find it a great experience for everyone involved as it gives the host college an opportunity to showcase their college facilities to a wider community.

"This will be our 43rd Finals and we have to thank our long-time sponsors Umbro who have agreed to remain our main sponsor for the next five years."

The prestigious Umbro Cup Final has a unique pairing this year with the holders IT Carlow 'A' bidding to capture the trophy for a record five times in a row and a sixth in seven years, facing the IT Carlow 'B' side in the decider.

The hosts Waterford IT are represented by their 'C' side who will meet Galway Technical Institute who are managed by former SSE Airtricity League stalwart Johnny Glynn in the Bob Eustace Cup Final on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, Dundalk midfielder Stephen O'Donnell will take charge of the recently promoted Division One winners Dundalk IT as they tackle Athlone IT in the Umbro Plate decider.

A third IT Carlow side - the 'C' team - have also made it to the 'B' Team Cup Final where their opponents will be IT Blanchardstown on Wednesday.

Of the 23 players in Cyprus this week, 10 are 22 years old or younger, and 27-year-old Caldwell says they have brought energy and talent to the group.

“It is brilliant. It brings a new energy to the squad and all these girls who are coming through the ranks are immensely talented so it is fantastic that we are bringing so much talent through from the underage teams. It is a credit to those involved with the underage teams that we are producing so much talent,” said Caldwell.

Caldwell feels that the fact that so many of the young players have played at European Championship and World Cup has helped them make the transition to senior international football.

“They adapt so well when they make step up you’d swear that they have been here for many years so it’s a credit to them. They have played at a really high level so they can feed off that experience of playing in major finals and major tournaments so, with that experience behind them, it’s probably not that much of a step up but they do adapt very well.”

Caldwell admits to being slight envious of the major experiences that the young players have had and admits that her burning desire is to secure qualification to a major finals.

“That is one of the major goals of mine, to reach a final tournament with Ireland,” said Caldwell who has played 47 times for Ireland and scored once. She thought she had doubled her goals total last Wednesday against Austria only to see the goal ruled out for a very dubious offside.

“Looking back on the video footage it seems to be that I was onside. I thought I was onside in the moment and I couldn’t understand why she had flagged for offside. I thought another player was impeding the goalkeeper or something so I was a little bit disappointed that one didn’t count. We have been a little bit unlucky in having two goals disallowed in the tournament so far which were perfectly onside but as long as we keep making the chances we are going to get goals eventually.”

After spending the last few seasons in Norway, Caldwell switched countries in January when she moved to Germany and joined Koln and she admits that she is enjoying life in the Bundesliga.

“Cologne is a great city and it is a great club to be a part of. There is a lot going on in the city and the fans are so involved with the club it has been really interesting so far. It has been a challenge because the level is extremely high but it is one that I am relishing.”

With two games down and two to go, the Cyprus Cup has reached its halfway point and Caldwell feels that the performances against Austria and Italy have been encouraging.

“It’s been really good so far. We have had two really good performances and were unlucky not to get two wins. We have been strong as a team and collectively as a unit so it’s been only positives for far.”

One of the things that give her a lot of satisfaction this week was the strength of character shown on Friday when Italy took the lead late in the game and the Irish looked set to suffer an agonising defeat.

“We conceded very late in the 86th minute so keep on fighting after conceding a late goal was good. Sometimes your head can go down but we kept on going, kept trying to create chances and we got what we deserved with the goal. It was also a great goal from Katie McCabe. She is a really amazing talent and I am sure it is going to be the first of many goals for her,” said Caldwell who is now hoping that Ireland can build on that draw against Italy and put some wins on the board, starting with Monday’s game against Hungary.

“We have played so well that we deserve wins. At this point I think we are progressing nicely to finally get a win and I hope we get them in our final two games. Then we will be full of confidence and ready to take on the EURO 2017 qualifiers in April and get the results that we need.”

Top Performer
Cillian Sheridan (Omonia Nicosia)
Into double figures for the season, Cavan native Sheridan netted a brace as Omonia started the Championship (top six clubs play off) with a big win. The 27-year-old faces his former club APOEL next week.

Watch Out For
Graham Kelly (Sheffield United)
Promoted to the first-team squad, this former St Kevin’s Boys defender was an un-used substitute in the 2-2 draw with Fleetwood Town. Able to cover anywhere across the backline, he is considered a rising star in the Blades academy.

Irish Manager Monitor
In the Championship, Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich Town beat Nottingham Forest 1-0, Brian McDermott’s Reading drew 2-2 with Fulham, while Chris Hughton’s Brighton & Hove Albion were scoreless in their duel with Preston North End.

In League One, Sean O’Driscoll’s Walsall lost 3-1 to Barnsley and that proved to be his final game in charge as the experienced manager parted ways with the club after just 16 games.

And in League Two, John Sheridan’s Newport County claimed a 1-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers to move onto 37 points and into 19th place – four above the relegation zone.

Further Afield
In the A-League, Roy O’Donovan made his return for Central Coast Mariners as they lost 2-0 to Melbourne Victory, while in the Eredivisie, Jack Byrne featured for Cambuur Leeuwarden as they lost 3-1 to Feyenoord, and in Cyprus, Cillian Sheridan netted twice for Omonia Nicosia in their 3-0 triumph over Anorthosis.

Republic of Ireland Women's National Team striker Rianna Jarrett suffered the third ACL injury of her career when making her senior debut on Friday against Italy. In this interview with FAI TV she talks about last Friday being a day of mixed emotions and her determination not to become a one cap wonder.

Ronan looks for more of the same against Hungary

Two strong displays against Austria and Italy may have yielded only one point but Ronan was pleased with the overall team performance and, in particular, the tremendous resolve the side showed in fighting back to earn a draw against tournament favourites Italy on Friday in Larnaca.

“The players have been sharp in training this week and our matches against Austria and Italy have been played at a very high intensity.  As a result, the two days of rest since Friday have definitely been welcome given the effort we’ve put into both those games.  But I’ll be looking for more of the same from the girls on Monday when we face a very organised and physically strong Hungarian team,” said Ronan.

Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw by Hungary in their opening game at last year’s Istria Cup in Croatia and the Hungarians are currently third in their EURO 2017 qualifying group with one of the group’s top teams, Russia, lying behind them. They have lost their two games to date in the Cyprus Cup but Ronan says they showed enough in those two games to command respect.

“They were tough opponents this time last year at the Istria Cup and we found them very hard to break down.  Watching them against both Austria and Italy, they’ve certainly improved since then, so we’ll need another good performance to get anything from the game.”

Megan Campbell, who didn’t play against Italy because of a foot injury sustained in the game against Austria, is a major doubt for tomorrow while scans have confirmed that Rianna Jarrett suffered an ACL injury on her left knee minutes after coming on as a substitute against Italy in what was her first appearance at senior level.

Once the dust settles on today’s action in Cyprus, Ireland will know their final place in the Group A table and will face the team occupying the same position in Group B which, at the moment, would be Wales as they currently lie third on two points behind Poland on four points and Czech Republic on three points with Ireland’s EURO 2017 opponents Finland bottom on one point.

McLaughlin wins Continental Tyres WNL award

The Peamount United midfielder has been in superb form of late - scoring in the recent win over Castlebar Celtic - in what is her debut season in the League.

"I've been playing well, but my team-mates have been so important. I definitely owe them so much and I wouldn't be able to play my game without them," said McLaughlin.

Operating as a playmaker has allowed McLaughlin to play to her strengths. It is something that Peamount boss Christy Lougheed was keen to embrace once the talented teenager signed this season.

The result has been the emergence of a player who can outwit opponents with her technique and create goalscoring opportunities with her accurate passing. But she credits the League as a whole with her development.

"It has been massively different for me to play in the League," she explained.

"It is more physical, faster, and demanding than what I was used to. It also makes you think faster because you don't get a lot of time on the ball, but that suits my game.

"I can definitely feel the benefits of playing in the League as I'm fitter than I have ever been, which is huge for me because I've had a lot of injury problems. So playing in the League has helped me to develop."

McLaughlin becomes the second monthly winner from the Ireland Women's Under 17 team that featured in last summer's UEFA European Championships following on from Cork City WFC's Saoirse Noonan.

The Donegal native is now part of Dave Connell's Women's Under 19 squad who are in Portugal for two midweek friendly games before she returns to WNL action on Saturday as Peamount take on UCD Waves.

Ireland lose to Hungary at Cyprus Cup

A 76th minute goal, completely against the run of play, from a free-kick by Hungary’s Viktoria Szabo proved to be decisive.

The Irish spurned a chance to share the spoils when striker Megan Connolly, on her 19th birthday, blasted a penalty over the crossbar three minutes later.

The Irish will now play EURO 2017 opponents Finland in the play-off for seventh and eighth place on Wednesday.

Manager Sue Ronan made four changes from the side that started the 1-1 draw with Italy last Friday with Emma Byrne, Meabh De Burca,  Rachel Graham and Katie McCabe coming in for Niamh Reid Burke, Sophie Perry, Niamh Fahey and Diane Caldwell.

It took Ireland some time to settle into the game but once they got moving they soon started creating chances and after 11 minutes Rachel Graham fired just over from outside the box after being teed up by Megan Connolly. Ruesha Littlejohn then failed to connect properly with a Katie McCabe pass while Julie-Ann Russell curled a shot past the far post after a short corner with Megan Connolly.

Hungary had one good chance in the first half when a 41st minute free kick by Alexandra Szarvas slid past Emma Byrne’s left hand post.

The second half was completey dominated by Ireland wth half-time substitute Denise O’Sullvian proving a major threat and defensive midfielder Karen Duggan ensuring the Hungarians were pinned into their own half for long periods.

After 47 minutes O’Sullivan forced Hungarian goalkeeper Sxocs Reka into the save of the match while Aine O’Gorman, Ruesha Littlejohn and Katie McCabe all had efforts that went close.

Disaster struck for Ireland in the 76th minute when, in their first attack of the half, Hungary scored. A deep free kick from Viktoria Szabo appeared to be head for the safety of Byrne’s hands when the ball spun out of her grasp and into the empty net to give the Hungarians a shock lead.

Minuites later they almost extended their lead but Byrne produced a great bock to deny Henrietta Csiszar as she bore down on goal.

The Irish were thrown a lifeline in the 79th minute when Katie McCabe was taken down by a reckless challenge from the goalkeeper. The resultanty penalty was taken by Megan Connollhy but, although she sent Reka the wrong way, she sent her shot over the crossbar.

Despite laying siege to the Hungarian goal for the remainder of the game, Ireland were unable to force an equaliser with Reka saving shots from O’Gorman and connolly late on as the Hungarians held on for victory.

Wexford Youths Claire O’Riordan made her senior international debut when she was introduced as a substitute late in the game.

After the game Ireland manager Sue Ronan admitted it was hard to explain how her side had failed to get anything out of a game they had emphatically dominated.

“Some of our attacking play was excellent tonight and I can’t fault any of my players for their work-rate and energy, but once again it was a case of not taking any of the numerous chances we created and then conceding a soft goal.  The players are very disappointed right now, but we’ll regroup tomorrow and take the positives from tonight, of which there were many, into our next game,” said Ronan.

Republic of Ireland: Emma Byrne (Arsenal); Aine O’Gorman (UCD Waves), Louise Quinn (Eskilstuna United), Savannah McCarthy (Glasgow City), Meabh De Burca (Galway); Ruesha Littlejohn (Glasgow City), Karen Duggan (UCD Waves), Rachel Graham (Shelbourne); Julie-Ann Russell (UCD Waves), Megan Connolly (Florida State University), Katie McCabe (Arsenal). Subs Used: Denise O’Sullivan (Glasgow City) for Graham (46 mins), Niamh Fahey (Chelsea) for Quinn (46 mins), Clare Shine (Glasgow City) for Littlejohn (79 mins), Claire O’Riordan (Wexford Youths) for McCabe (86 mins). First caps are special for Hansberry & O’Riordan

Emma Hansberry & Claire O'Riordan

While they play for Wexford, they hail from different parts of Ireland. Hansberry is from Strandhill, Co Sligo, while O’Riordan hails from Newcastlewest, Co Limerick. And while Hansberry has followed the elite pathway through the various under-age squads and into the senior panel, O’Riordan never played for Ireland at any level until this week.

Hansberry was first called up to the Irish squad for the 2014 Cyprus Cup and was also in Americia last May for the games against USA and Haiti so she’s had to wait a while to make her breakthrough but admits it was worth the wait.

“I’ve been waiting a wee while now but it was definitely worth it. I am glad I got a run out last night. It was a great feeling and it was a nice taster and hopefully I can push on now over the next few years and get a few more caps under my belt.

“When you come up to senior level it is a lot more faster and physical  You can’t just walk in, you have to earn it and that’s through playing with your own club at home in Ireland and then when you are in here with the seniors you have to earn your place on the pitch.  It took two years for me to do it but I did it in the end.”

Hansberry was part of the Ireland squad that went to the FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup in 2010 and reached the quarter-finals and she is the 11th player from that group to have been capped at senior level. However, for O’Riordan, the game against Hungary marked her first ever appearance at international level.

“It was my first ever time to represent my country so it was a big deal for me. I missed out on the under-age squads. That was disappointing but this is where I am now at the moment. Definitely, it was disappointing hearing about all the girls coming up and going to World Cup but these things happen. This is where I am now and this is what I am focused on and this is what I am going to keep working towards.”

Both are students at Carlow IT which has allowed them to continue their education while playing for Wexford Youths but given the distance from their respective homes it has meant making a lot of sacrifices according to O’Riordan.

“We don’t go home much because we can’t but this is the sort of commitment you have to have for the sport that you love. You really have to commit everything to try and be successful and that’s what we have both done.  Last season I stepped away from my GAA roots and I have benefitted from it. I have grown so much as a player for Wexford Youths and now I am senior international, I have played Champions League, I have played in the Aviva and I have won a League and Cup double. It is good to get the rewards when you work so hard at something,” said O’Riordan.

Ireland’s final game at the Cyprus Cup will take place tomorrow at 9am (Irish time) against Finland in the Tasos Marko Stadium in Paralimni.

Beirne strike helps WU19s earn draw

Dave Connell's team flew out to Portugal for two friendly games to help them prepare for the upcoming UEFA European Championship Elite Phase qualifiers, which will take place on home soil in April.

A recent friendly win over Northern Ireland gave the head coach food for thought and so did this game as several players impressed, including goalkeeper Amanda McQuillan who made a smart save early on.

Ireland's swift counter attacking allowed them to break beyond their opponents' backline with Megan Lynch and Roma McLaughlin taking aim with first-half efforts but neither could find the back of the net.

Strong in the air and disciplined in their play, Ireland didn't allow the afternoon heat to drain their energy. In fact, they looked the more dangerous of the two sides with Evelyn Daly firing a shot over in the second period.

When the opening goal did arrive on 63 minutes it took many by surprise, including Portugal goalkeeper Tatiana Beleza, as substitute Beirne delivered a corner kick from the left and it evaded everyone to bounce into the net.

Portugal did hit back with a goal through Alexa Ferreria on 85 minutes but that didn't take the shine off Ireland's performance. Connell can take many positives from his side's display even though he would note that there is still room for improvement.

The two teams will meet again on Thursday in Faro, where Connell will consider his line-up and approach. However, he will be pleased by the attitude and effort shown by his team in this game.

RepublicofIreland: McQuillan; Nelson (Donnelly 58), Keenan, Moloney, Prior; Daly (Byrne 79), H Nolan, Lynch (Watters 69); Finn (Beirne 39), J Nolan (Kearns 58), McLaughlin (Ryan-Doyle 69).
