Ireland U15s record second victory over Czechs

U15 v Czechs Game 2.JPG

Colin O'Brien's side produced a competitive display to follow up on a 5-2 victory over the same opponents two days earlier.

The Irish side got off to a solid start with wide-men Marc Walsh and Callum Thompson catching the eye. The home side should have taken the lead in the ninth minute when Seanie Mahon curled over brilliantly but defender Hakeem Ryan was unfortunate to see his effort bounce back away from goal from a matter of yards out.

Ireland's disappointment at that missed chance was eased less than 60 seconds later as they regained possession and Ciaran Brennan burst past the visiting defence to fire home brilliantly from the edge of the box.

The impressive Matyáš Kozák was again the Czech side's key danger in attack and in the 17th minute he got through on the left only to be denied at close range by Irish keeper Sam O'Gorman.

O'Gorman could do little to deny the Czechs an equaliser in the 29th minute when Vít Kolář found the net with a thumping free-kick from 25 yards out.

Four minutes before the break Ireland had a chance to regain the lead when Sean Brennan found namesake Ciaran Brennan with a low cross from the left  but keeper Kvído Formánek did enough to keep out the poked finish,

In the 47th minute Ireland were handed a golden opportunity to extend their lead when Tomáš Vincour was penalised for a foul on Ciaran Brennan after Formánek had initially denied the striker. After the dust settled Ciaran Brennan stepped up to fire home from the penalty spot.

The drama dropped off a little after that but Ireland added a third in the 84th minute when Callum Thompson curled home brilliantly from a free-kick from 25 yards.

Defence Forces record win over UK Armed Forces

There was very little between the two teams until McGee pounced in the 89th minute to meet Chris Kenny's pass and head in the winning goal. It was a day of double celebrations for Kenny as his partner gave birth to a baby boy earlier in the day.

Kenny was wearing the captain's armband for Declan Sheridan's side in what was a worthwhile test for the Defence Forces to aid their preparation for next month's European Championships.

The first chance of the game arrived on 20 minutes when Gerry Walsh roamed into a good position but was just off target with his header. The visitors then went close before Irish set-pieces began to cause problems.

After a scoreless first period, Sheridan made three changes and it took time for them to regain their rhythm until Jodie Dillon forced UK goalkeeper Matt Shortt into a fine save.

However, there was little that Shortt could do to deny McGee in the closing minutes as the home team secured the win.

Irish Defence Forces: Brown (Deegan h-t); Scullion (Fox 84), Long, L Delaney (Shortt 73), Grace, Dempsey (Duffy 79), Friel, Kenny, Poutch (McGee h-t), Gettins (Dillon h-t), Walsh (S Delaney 73).

UK Armed Forces: Shortt; Cushion, Evans, Dixon, Broadbent, Williams (Woodhouse 72), Stoneman, Kerr (Berry 74), Claisse, Todd, Prior.

Goals from Conor Kane, Ryan O'Donoghue, and Jamie Aherne sealed the win by half-time even though Bradley Manson pulled one back late on for the visitors.

It was always going to be a tricky fixture for Paddy O'Reilly's side, but quick counter attacking ensured Ireland took control early on. And once they continued to improve as the game wore on.

In fact, there was only 12 minutes on the clock when Kane, representing Lucan CBS, opened the scoring with a cool finish and that set the tone for the attack-minded approach from the hosts.

On 42 minutes, O'Donoghue, from Our Lady's Secondary School in Belmullet, broke free to blast in the second goal as Ireland maintained their dominance in the first period.

Just before the break, Confey College student Aherne added a third goal from the penalty spot and that advantage stayed intact all the way until the 73rd minute when Manson scored for Scotland.

The win was much deserved for Ireland and one that they can take a lot of confidence from due to their positive style of play and clinical finishing.

Republic of Ireland: Donnelly; Hanney, O'Donoghue (Delap h-t), Gibbons, McCarthy (Brouder 55), Scales, Kane (Doherty h-t), Lacey (Morgan 27), Grimes (Doherty 63), Drinan, Aherne.

Scotland: Morton; McRitchie (McDonald h-t), Kirkwood, Laing, Cook, Manson, Banner, Strachan (Smith 64), MacLeod (Kane h-t), Koshoedo, Cunningham (Martin 76).

Former internationals join FAI coaching set-up

Damien Duff, Kenny Cunningham, Mark Kinsella, Keith Andrews and Stephen McPhail will all link up with FAI High Performance Director Ruud Dokter to help with the coaching of the next generation of Irish footballers, through the Player Development Pathway.

The former players have all recently been involved with the FAI Coach Education programme and will combine their new skills with their vast experience in the game, which earned them a combined total of 265 senior caps.

The five coaches will work alongside the managers in the underage structure and Dokter welcomed their arrival as a "very positive" development for Irish football.

"We're delighted they will work with us. They bring great experience and to the game and to underage football, and in-turn, they will gain from the FAI as they continue to develop their own coaching careers," said Dokter.

"We have previously had arrangements like this with Mark Kinsella helping our Under 16 boys and Kenny Cunningham working with the Under 15 boys' side, so this commitment is something that we have been considering for some time.

"This is a very positive thing for Irish football and also Irish coaching because it allows current members of staff to learn from these experienced former players and vice versa. We look forward to having them contribute to our Player Development Pathway."

FAI CEO John Delaney said he was delighted with having Duff, Cunningham, Kinsella, Andrews, and McPhail onboard: "The FAI has always sought to progress talent, whether that is our own coaching staff, or in this case to involve former players, who have played at the very top level.

"I'm delighted to have these big names onboard, and I look forward to watching them develop their own coaching talents as well as observing the development of the players who they will work with."

The five coaches each bring the experience of coming through underage level with Ireland teams, forging successful careers abroad, and representing the senior team on the biggest stage.

Duff earned 100 senior caps, Cunningham was a senior captain, Kinsella featured at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Andrews played at the 2012 UEFA European Championships, and McPhail was part of youth squads in the late 1990s that made notable achievements.

Now, the quintet are excited to transfer their knowledge to the young players who have excelled in the FAI Emerging Talent Programme and broke into underage squads with the aim of reaching the highest level.

Duff will work with Colin O'Brien's U15 team, McPhail will be with Paul Osam's U16s, Andrews links up with the U17s, Cunningham will be in with Tom Mohan's U19s, and Kinsella will be part of Noel King's U21s.

Top Performer
Darron Gibson (Everton)
In his first Premier League start of the season Gibson excelled by marshalling the Toffees midfield in the 1-1 draw with Southampton. The Derry man was crisp with his passing and clever with his running in a tight game.

Watch Out For
Ryan Rainey (Wolverhampton Wanderers)
This Donegal native is making notable strides in the Wolves academy and it was hardly surprising that he was given the captain’s armband for their Under 21 team. Able to play in defence or midfield, he is strong and keen to learn.

Irish Manager Monitor
In the Championship, Chris Hughton’s Brighton & Hove Albion hammered Fulham 5-0, Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich Town drew 1-1 with Sheffield Wednesday, while Brian McDermott’s Reading lost 3-2 to Leeds United.

In League One, John Sheridan’s Oldham Athletic drew 1-1 away to Fleetwood Town to move onto 48 points.

Further Afield
In the Eredivisie, Jack Byrne was in the Cambuur Leeuwarden midfield as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to NEC Nijmegen. In the A-League, Andy Keogh was unable to help Perth Glory advance in the Play-Offs as they lost 2-0 to Melbourne City.

In Scotland, Conrad Logan was Man of the Match as Hibernian overcame Dundee United on penalties in the Scottish Cup semi-final. Anthony Stokes and Sean Dillon also featured in the game. In the other semi-final, Rob Kiernan helped Rangers beat Celtic 5-4 on penalties following a 2-2 draw.

In the NASL in the United States, Colin Falvey featured as Indy Eleven beat New York Cosmos 2-1 (former Ireland underage star Eamon Zayed socred twice), while Richie Ryan helped Jacksonville Armada claim a 2-1 win over Miami.

In the USL, James O’Connor’s Louisville City, who had Niall McCabe involved, beat FC Cincinnati 3-2, Kyle Callan-McFadden was in action for Orlando City B as they lost 1-0 to Harrisburg City Islanders, Iarflaith Davoren played for Tulsa Roughnecks in the scoreless draw with St Louis, Bobby Moseley started for San Antonio FC in their 1-0 loss to Orange County Blues, Derek Foran was unable to prevent Sacarmento Republic from losing 1-0 to Portland Timbers II, and Liam Miller played for Wilmington Hammerheads in their 2-0 win over FC Montreal

Women’s Focus
In England, Emma Byrne and Katie McCabe were un-used substitutes as Arsenal Ladies beat Sunderland Ladies 7-0 to advance to the FA Women’s Cup Final where they will meet Niamh Fahey’s Chelsea Ladies.

In Scotland, Clare Shine headed in the only goal as Glasgow City beat Aberdeen 1-0 with Savannah McCarthy and Ruesha Littlejohn also featuring. UEFA EURO 2016 to use Hawk-Eye for goal-line technology

Screen Shot 2016-04-19 at 14.42.57.png

UEFA has selected Hawk-Eye as the goal-line technology supplier for all matches at UEFA EURO 2016 in France. The camera-based system will be installed in all ten stadia before the tournament kicks off on 10 June at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis.

The use of goal-line technology was approved for UEFA EURO 2016 by the UEFA Executive Committee in January 2016. The system will work alongside additional assistant referees (AARs), who will continue to monitor all activity in and around the penalty area.

Hawk-Eye was chosen after a selection process in which all four FIFA-licensed goal-line technology providers were invited to provide information and submit commercial offers. Hawk-Eye was the first company to receive a FIFA goal-line technology license and its system is already in use in the English, German and Italian leagues and it was used for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.

UEFA's chief refereeing officer Pierluigi Collina said: “Goal-line technology and additional assistant referees are complement each other perfectly. The main task of the AARs is not to control the goal line and decide whether a ball has crossed it; rather they are responsible for monitoring everything that is happening in the penalty area overall, aiding the main referee in making important decisions in the box. Now, with GLT focused on the goal line, the additional assistants can focus exclusively on the control of other incidents in the penalty area, the most crucial area of the pitch.”

The Hawk-Eye system uses seven cameras per goal, with control software tracking the ball within the goal area. Using vision-processing techniques and software, Hawk-Eye indicates whether or not a goal has been scored within one second with a vibration and visual signal on each match official’s watch.

UEFA’s cooperation with Hawk-Eye will continue, as goal-line technology is to be used in the UEFA Super Cup match in Trondheim and the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League, from the play-offs onwards. A decision concerning its implementation in the UEFA Europa League, from the group stage onwards in 2017/18, will be made at a later stage.

EA Sports Cup: Cork cruise, Hoops dazzle

$

TrevorClarke.jpg

Cork City cruised through to the quarter-finals of the EA Sports Cup after a second half blitz at Turner’s Cross saw them trounce Waterford United 7-0.

Blues’ keeper Corey Chambers kept First Division Waterford in the match early on with fine saves from Gavan Holohan and Sean Maguire before excelling again to stop Mark O’Sullivan's deflected shot on 32 minutes.

But the goals quickly flooded in on the resumption as Cork were 5-0 up 15 minutes into the second half. Danny Morrissey opened the scoring on 47 minutes, heading home Kevin O’Connor’s free kick.

Three minutes later, Ian Turner drove home past Chambers to double the lead. Gavan Holohan then blasted to the net after pouncing on a defensive error to add a third four minutes after that.

A corner was then laid off by O’Sullivan for midfielder Geared Morrissey to side-foot to the net on 57 minutes. O’Sullivan then got in on the act with Cork’s fifth goal on the hour, racing through onto Turner’s pass to shoot past Chambers.

City weren’t finished yet, though, as Conor McCarthy added a sixth goal on 70 minutes with O’Sullivan rowing in with his second of the night two minutes later.

Teenager goalkeeper Jack Brady was the hero as First Division Shelbourne beat Bohemians in a penalty shootout at Tolka Park.

After a fitful 120 minutes - and a further 12 minutes of added time - of football failed to deliver a goal, Brady, 19, saved spot kicks from Paddy Kavangah and Lorcan Fitzgerald in the shootout.

Bohs' keeper Dean Delany also stopped spot kicks from Cian Kavanagh and James English. Gavin Boyne, Gareth Coughlan, Jamie Doyle and Daire Doyle were all successful from the spot for Shels.

Mark Quigley, Kurtis Byrne and Anto Murphy scored their penalties for Bohs before Gypsies’ midfielder Keith Buckley ballooned his kick over the bar to put Shels through 4-3.

Surprise new signing, former Republic of Ireland international striker Stephen Elliott led Shels’ attackon, but failed to impress in what was his first game in 15 months following injury.

Teenager midfielder Rory Feely was the hero for holders St Patrick’s Athletic with an extra-time winner to beat Dundalk 1-0 at Oriel Park.

Dundalk had the better of the first half with Georgie Poynton hitting the bar a minute before the break with Saints’ keeper Brendan Clarke then twice saving well to thwart Ciaran Kilduff.

League champions Dundalk remained the better side but couldn’t find a way to goal.

St Pat’s then struck 23 minutes into extra-time. Feely first saw his header from a Conan Byrne cross parried by keeper Gabriel Sava before he scooped home the rebound to put Liam Buckley’s side through.

Ruairi Keating was the hero for Galway United, last year’s beaten finalists, with the decisive penalty in a 4-2 shootout win over Finn Harps, after they played out a 0-0 draw over 120 minutes, at Eamonn Decay Park.

Striker Keating had come closest to scoring in 90 minutes when, 23 minutes in, he was put through by Marc Ludden but saw his effort come back off the Harps’ crossbar.

Pat Fenlon gave youths its fling as his Shamrock Rovers saw off First Division Athlone Town to cruise into the quarter-finals of the EA Sports Cup at Tallaght Stadium.

Twenty-year-old Sean Heaney, Sean Boyd, just 17, and 18-year-old Trevor Clarke scored as Hoops eased to a 3-0 win.

In command from the start, Hoops’ pressure paid off with the lead goal on 24 minutes. Gareth McCaffrey floated a corner to the back post where central defender Heanay’s downward header bounced through to the net.

Substitute Boyd doubled Rovers’ lead with a debut goal in first half stoppage time. Danny North laid off skipper Stephen McPhail’s ball into the area for under-19 striker Boyd to confidently curl his shot to the net.

Athlone rallied briefly in the second half with Cassidy bringing a tip over save from Craig Hyland from a quick free kick before substitute Adam kelly rattled the bar form distance.

Rovers got back on top late on to seal their win on 79 minutes. Luke Byrne and North combined to set up Clarke who drilled to the far corner of the net.

Aaron Greene and John O’Flynn scored a brace apiece as a full strength Limerick also eased through 4-0 against a Wexford Youths side that made ten changes from their humbling at St Pat’s last Friday.

Martin Russell’s runaway First Division leaders dominated from the start, taking the lead on 32 minutes when Greene availed of a mix up in  Youths' box to shoot past Matt Connor.

Fellow striker O’Flynn doubled the lead six minutes later. Robbie Williams flicked on a Shane Tracy corner for the Corkman to turn and fire home.

O’Flynn scored again on 72 minutes. Midfielder Garbhan Coughlan treaded the ball through for the run of the man-of-the-match who took the ball round Connor to slide it home. Greene then got his second of the night in the final minute.

Nathan Boyle scored twice as Derry City maintained their bright start to the season, seeing off Sligo Rovers 2-0 at the Brandywell. Striker Boyle put Derry ahead on 34 minutes before adding a second right on the blow of half-time.

Bottom of the Premier Division Bray Wanderers blew a 2-0 lead before goals in extra-time from from Andrew Lewis and a Dylan Connolly penalty saw off non-league Bluebell United 4-2 after extra-time at the Carlisle Grounds.

Ryan Brennan, with a 25th minute penalty, and Ger Pender’s 37th minute strike appeared to have Bray in control. But Sean Byrne pulled a goal back for LSL side Bluebell five minutes before half-time before then levelling on 68 minutes.

Lewis put Bray back in front on 100 minutes before Connolly scored from the spot in the 115th minute. Bluebell finished with 10 men when Dean Lawrence was sent off a minute later.

St Peter’s Athlone 0-2 Pike Rovers

With the semi-final at Leah Victoria Park in Tullamore in stalemate and heading for extra-time, Steven McGann broke the deadlock on 87 minutes by scoring off his own rebound before John Connery added the second in stoppage time with a well-placed shot.

Victory for the Limerick side sets up a tantalising finale at the Dublin 4 venue, where they’ll be hoping to emulate their 2011 triumph.

Similar to the first match last Saturday week, which was abandoned due to snow when scoreless after 50 minutes, there was little between the sides and it took all of 137 minutes for the elusive goal to arrive.

Both teams had fashioned opportunities to have nicked the win by the time McGann stole in with three minutes left but it was befitting for the man-of-the-match to provide the telling intervention.

His opposite striker, Noel McGee of St Peter’s, produced the best of the first-half chances with a couple of wicked free-kicks which goalkeeper Gary Neville did well to turn around the near post.

However, the return of Wayne Colbert solidified Pike’s spine and they grew into the game as tie progressed.

McGann headed just wide shortly after the restart from Paddy O’Malley’s cross while Wayne O’Donovan also went close with a free-kick that curled over.

Colbert was guilty of the most glaring miss 12 minutes from the end when he somehow headed over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.

Peter’s had their moments too in the second half, especially when the Pike defence switched off, yet they failed to profit. Scott Delaney’s header which missed the target was their best opening.

As the full-time whistle loomed, McGann struck. Breaching the offside trap, he raced clear and, despite being denied initially by goalkeeper Keith Hynes, he followed up to tuck the rebound home from close-range.

As the Saints piled forward in numbers searching for an equaliser, they were undone again in stoppage-time with Connery providing the sumptuous finish from the edge of the penalty area.

ST PETER'S: Hynes; Donohue, Scullion, Delaney, McCrossan; Nkololo, Brooks, Stephens, Lee; Magee, Sherlock.

PIKE ROVERS: Neville; W O'Donovan, P Mullins (Walsh  41), O'Callaghan, E O'Donovan; Connery, Colbert, J Mullins, O'Malley (Daly 71); McGann, Collins.

Irish fans celebrate.jpg

With the tournament just 50 days away, UEFA EURO 2016 SAS is keen to ensure that any fans who are still looking for tickets can buy them through an official channel. Therefore, a ticket portal will open on 26 April where fans can purchase tickets on a first-come, first-served basis. Supporters are advised that, with the excitement for the event building, these tickets will sell out quickly.

These tickets have become available from a variety of sources. Firstly, as we get closer to the tournament, the layouts of the stadia have become clearer, which has allowed UEFA to finalise the exact number of seats for each venue. Secondly, some tickets initially reserved for fans of a number of participating teams have not been taken up and these tickets will now be made available to the general public. Finally, UEFA will also make available for sale some tickets, which, due to UEFA’s successful legal efforts to minimize unauthorized resale, have been cancelled as a result of the breach of the ticketing terms and conditions by previous tickets holders. UEFA once again would like to reiterate the message that fans should refrain from buying tickets from any sources other than the official UEFA EURO 2016 ticket portal on EURO2016.com.

It is extremely likely that there will be queues on the ticket portal on the first few days after the portal opens. Matches that have significant numbers of tickets on sale will be displayed on EURO2016.com so fans do not have to queue to see what is available.

This ticket portal will only be selling tickets in Categories 1-2-3 and 4. For Accessibility tickets, please click here to access the lottery portal that is open for applications until 25 April.

MasterCard or Visa are the only credit cards accepted for payment.

While fans are waiting for 26 April, they can register their interest now to be notified when tickets for certain matches become available on the portal.

The tickets on sale as from 26 April are for individuals only. Information about Corporate VIP Hospitality, which delivers premium seating with fine dining in the stadium, is available on the UEFA EURO 2016 Hospitality website on EURO2016.com

Aine O'Gorman wins Continental Tyres WNL Player of the Month

A stunning month saw UCD Waves defeat Peamount United, Kilkenny United WFC and Galway WFC, scoring 13 goals along the way, with club captain O’Gorman leading by example.

“We had a good month of March, and won all our games which was the goal from the start.

“Once the team wins that is the main thing but to get on the scoresheet a couple of times was a nice added bonus,” O’Gorman said as she was presented with the award.

“It’s obviously nice to get an individual award but you just want to see your team win and do well,” added O’Gorman, whose UCD Waves side sit at the top of the Continental Tyres Women’s National League with just two games remaining for them.

An impressive month on the domestic front was added to with the international side as O’Gorman got on the scoresheet in the 5-0 win away to Montenegro, before going on the play the full 90 minutes of the defeat to Spain.

“We always knew we had to go out and do the job against Montenegro, while we were going to be up against it facing Spain. As disappointing as the Spain result was, we are still in contention and have three big games coming up. If we win the three games, qualification is still there for us,” O’Gorman reflected.

Looking ahead to a busy perod with her club, O’Gorman insists they are taking it one game at a time, with Wednesday’s Continental Tyres WNL Cup semi-final against Galway WFC the primary focus.

“Preparations are going well for the semi final. We are going to have to focus on winning the remaining games of the season. The cup semi against Galway will be a great game, one we are looking forward to, and hopefully we can finish the season with a bit of silverware.”

Aine O’Gorman was presented with her Continental Tyres WNL Player of the Month Award by Tom Dennigan, General Sales Manager with Continental Tyres, at the Glenview Hotel, Co Wicklow.

Cork Youth Leagues 5-2 Limerick & District League

This is Cork’s second win ever in this tournament and the only other time they won this Cup was back in 2012 in a side that included Preston North End’s Alan Browne.

The opening exchanges of this game were a tight affair, but it was to be Cork with ten players in their squad who will be playing the FAI Youth Cup Final next week between Ballincollig and Ringmahon, to score first after 12 minutes. A Ciaran Kearney corner was kept in play at the back post by Matthew Draper and David Hurley falling to man of the match Jordan O’Regan to poke home.

The game was level on 26 minutes with Ruairi Casserly firing home from 16 yards after Troy O’Sullivan had blocked Jack Barry’s shot.

But Cork struck the front on the half hour when Dean Swords played in Kearney who made no mistake finishing low to the net.

Casserly scored his second of the day on 36 minutes when he got free on the edge of the box and fired past Owen O’Sullivan in the Cork goal.

With the teams tied two apiece at the interval, it was all to play for in the second half. But on 60 minutes O’Regan popped up with his second of the day when he finished home the rebound after Sean McNamara had done well to save Kearney’s shot.

Limerick tried for the equaliser but it never arrived and the game was put beyond doubt in the closing five minutes when substitutes Chris Hull and Matthew Whelan scored. Hull fired home from 20 yards of the underside of the crossbar on 85, while Whelan tapped home Kearney’s cross to seal the victory in stoppage time.

Cork Youth Leagues: Eoin O’Sullivan; Bryan Cotter (Aaron Quilligan 90), Troy O’Sullivan, Matthew Draper, Scott McCarthy; Darren Murphy (Chris Hull 69), Shay Daly, Dean Swords, David Hurley, Ciaran Kearney; Jordan O’Regan (Matthew Whelan 83).

Subs not used: Chris Hull, Aaron Quilligan, Matthew Whelan, James Cotter, Simon Falvey, Nathan Brown, Shane Hogan.

Limerick and District League: Sean McNamara; Clive Healy, Dylan Sheehan, Steve Daly, Ben Quirke; Dylan Kennedy (Aaron Murphy 71), Eoghan Creegan, Anthony Barrett (Dean Shinners 54), Jack Barry (Trevor Daly 37); David Hannon, Ruairi Casserly.

International Champions Cup set for Aviva Stadium

Now in its fourth year the International Champions Cup brings together the giants of club football on four different continents and this year will see two greats of the European game clash at the Aviva Stadium.

Launched in front of a large audience at Ireland's premier sporting venue by ex-Barcelona midfielder Edgar Davids and current Celtic captain Scott Brown, the game is bound to attract supporters from all over the world and anticipation is already building for snap up tickets.

Speaking at the launch, Aviva Stadium chairman and FAI CEO John Delaney said the game was "fitting of such a world class venue".

"This is the perfect club match to showcase everything that this fantastic stadium has to offer, and will be a very special occasion for all sports fans to savour," he said.

"This will be up there with the Europa League Final in 2011, and with the stadium's hosting of matches in the UEFA EURO 2020 tournament.

"Barcelona are one of the best teams in world football at the moment, and it could be argued, one of the very best sides of all time. They are the current Champions League holders, and are on top of the Spanish League going for yet another title.

"Celtic are one of the most keenly supported clubs in Ireland, and they are also going for yet another title. This match at the Aviva Stadium will be like a home game for them, such is the massive fan base that they have in this country."

The International Champions Cup will visit four continents this summer and Charlie Stillitano, Relevant Sports Chairman, believes the stop in Dublin will be one of the most anticipated: "We are thrilled to host this marquee match at the Aviva Stadium as part of the International Champions Cup. The ICC is truly a global tournament and we are excited to present our first match in Dublin. We have no doubt that the fans will be treated to an amazing match on July 30."

Roberto Fernandez, Barcelona club technical secretary and former player, expressed his excitement over his club being invited to take part in this match: "The game between Barcelona and Celtic should be a very interesting match. Celtic is a legendary club and this year they are once again the big favourites to win their national League.

"For us, this game will mark our debut in this year's edition of the International Champions Cup and will be a good test as part of our preparations for next season, against a team that always demands a lot. I hope the spectators enjoy a great game."

Scott Brown, Celtic captain, echoed those sentiments as he remarked: "We are delighted to take part in the International Champions Cup, joining such high calibre teams in a fantastic tournament. I am sure the match in Dublin, between two of world football's great clubs, at a brilliant venue, will be an occasion to savour.

"Celtic is a club with such strong Irish roots and we are privileged to have so many supporters in Ireland. The match will give our fans in Ireland another great opportunity to see the team in action and I know they and other fans of both clubs from further afield will be really looking forward to the game."

One of the most iconic clubs in world football, Barcelona are synonymous with success having won five Champions League titles, four UEFA Cup Winners' Cups, five UEFA Super Cups, three FIFA Club World Cups, 23 La Liga, and 27 Copa Del Rey titles.

Luis Enrique's team boast some of the world's best players in Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Luis Suarez, and they are currently joint top of La Liga as they attempt to successfully defend their crown as the best team in Spain.

Celtic are also in pursuit of a back-to-back title triumph as they sit top of the Scottish Premiership with an eight-point lead. The Glasgow club are chasing a 47th League title, while they have also lifted the European Cup - becoming the first British club to do so in 1967.

This will be Celtic's third visit to the Aviva Stadium following appearances at the Dublin Super Cup in 2011 and the Dublin Decider in 2013.

Tickets, which will start at €40 and €15 for children, for this unmissable game will go on sale through Ticketmaster.ie at 9am on May 3.

Yelverton asks Colleges & Universities for more of the same

A 3-0 victory over the Scottish Universities team in Dublin earlier this month showed that Yelverton has assembled a strong panel who have the desire to play attacking football.

Many of the Irish squad are attached to SSE Airtricity League clubs and that exposure can help them in this game because their opponents boast some top talents too, including Ellis Bellamy, son of ex-Wales international Craig.

Yelverton will use the facilities at the FAI National Training Centre prior to their departure to Wales and he is eager to make the most of every advantage ahead of what should be a tricky encounter.

"This fixture in Wales gives the players the first opportunity to pull on an Irish jersey and represent their country at this level on away soil and I will be keen to continue our fine start with a good performance," said Yelverton.

"The Welsh side are a well-coached and very organised side with some top players that are sure to trouble us and I certainly expect it to be a tough game."

Paddy O'Reilly's side sit second in the table - behind England - with five points from three games and their confidence is high following the recent 3-1 victory over Scotland in Killarney.

Injury means that Jesse Stafford Lacey missed out, but Corey Chambers and Fintan Borotto have been drafted in to give O'Reilly food for thought ahead of what should be a tricky assignment.

Talent is certainly not hard to find in this Ireland squad and their results reflect that as they remain unbeaten. The task now is to extend that run for one more game to ensure that they finish in second place.

O'Reilly, and his diligent staff, will hope to end the campaign in the best possible way and that is why everyone is focusing solely on picking up the three points on offer.
