UCD celebrate

The win in this top Third Level Football competition gives the Belfield side sweet revenge for narrowly going down to UCC in last week’s Irish Universities Collingwood Cup.

While UCD were deserved winners the Cork side would have to be disappointed as they never reached anything light the level of performance they gave in the cup competition.

UCD looked the sharper side from early on and they dominated the opening half but they had to wait until a minute before the break to finally go ahead.

Daire O’Connor seized on a poor clearance and succeeded in taking the ball off Sean O’Mahony before going on to beat goalkeeper Kevin O’Brien with a clinical finish.

The second half had an explosive start with UCC  levelling the game three minutes in when Daniel Pender beat Niall Corbett with a neat turn and shot from close in after a fine cross from Sean O’Callaghan.

Two minutes later UCD were back in front after O’Connor burst through the Cork defence and just as he was about to shoot O’Brien rushed out of his goal and upended him.

Referee Paul Tuite awarded the penalty and Gary O’Neill made no mistake from the spot kick.

UCD went on to seal the win in a two minute spell with 20 minutes remaining.

First Samir Belhout playing in his fourth Premier Final finished smartly after converting a brilliant left wing cross from Jason McClelland.

Two minutes later McClelland squeezed in the fourth from a narrow angle following fine work by O’Connor and Georgie Kelly.

Miriam has been successfully appointed to the position of CEO with Paralympics Ireland. This is a fantastic achievement and a well-deserved next step in her career.
Miriam has worked with the FAI since 2005, where she has been a much-valued member of staff, and as a Director with the Association. She began her career as the Unit Manager of the FAI Grassroots Programme and in 2008 she was promoted to the role of Technical Department Manager responsible for the implementation process of the Technical Development Plan.
Over her time she developed strong relationships, which she has maintained through partnerships with Sport Ireland, Local Authorities, UEFA and FIFA. This led to her appointment to the position of Business Partnerships Manager in August 2013, where she focused on strategic planning and increasing Sports Development participation, assessing future funding applications and managing major funding relationships.
Miriam was more recently promoted to Business Partnerships Director in January 2016 and has been a member of the Executive team since 2011.
FAI CEO John Delaney said: "I would like to thank Miriam for her many years of dedication and loyalty to the Association. She has brought with her professionalism and expertise that will be sorely missed at this level.
"On behalf of everyone, I'd like to wish Miriam many years of success as CEO at Paralympics Ireland, the next natural progression in her career."
Speaking today, Miriam said that her time in the FAI was "a great experience", which played a huge part in her career development.
"Working within the FAI for over 10 years has been a great experience for me, and has been a solid grounding in Irish sports development and administration.
"I have had the privilege of working with many excellent people in the FAI, from whom I have learned so much. I would like to thank them for all of their support and wish the FAI continued success. I would like to thank John Delaney, in particular, for all of his support and guidance over the years which I very much appreciate.
"Through my work in the FAI I have had the pleasure of working with so many great stakeholders, partners, committee members and volunteers at international, national and local level. At every level I have encountered very professional and dedicated people all focused on achieving common goals for the betterment of Irish sport.
"The experience gained from working with the FAI will of course be helpful as I move on to the next step in my career with Paralympics Ireland."

REPORT: Czech Republic 0-1 WNT - Bell claims first win

WNT_Squad.jpg

In their first game of the Cyprus Cup tournament, goals from experienced duo Stephanie Roche and Aine O'Gorman ensured a 2-0 victory for the Women's National Team.

Bell included Reading WFC defender Harriet Scott in the starting line-up to make her international debut as Ireland got off to a strong start.

They were rewarded for their strong start in the 24th minute as a well-worked corner routine saw the ball land at Roche's feet for her to smash home to give Bell's side the lead.

In a game of few chances for either side, Ireland absorbed all the pressure the Czechs put them under and sealed the victory with two minutes remaining.

Substitute Ruesha Littlejohn found the tireless O'Gorman who found the back of the net off the post from outside the area to seal a fine win for the Irish.

WNT manager Colin Bell said: "I'm delighted with the performance. The players were a credit to themselves today, they put in so much effort across the pitch for the entire 90 minutes.

"They did everything we asked. They were able to sit back and use the ball well as we've got a lot of players at different stages but they all found the level which was required.

"It's great for Harriet (Scott) to get her debut. She's a tireless defender who works really hard and you can tell she is proud to wear the shirt.

"It is just a start for the group but it is a good start. We've still got a lot of work to do with a difficult game against Hungary next which means we'll have to refocus and get to the same levels."

A first half strike from new Shelbourne Ladies signing Niamh Prior, was followed up after the interval by two goals in three minutes.

Substitute Tiegan Ruddy was on hand to double the Girls in Green’s lead in the 52nd minute when Jamie Finn crossed an inviting ball into the area where Ruddy got to the front post first to flick the ball into the top corner.

That was followed up moments later as Cork City WFC’s Saoirse Noonan got on the end of Tiegan Ruddy’s free-kick to put Dave Connell’s side in command.

An impressive win for the Irish and with every member of the squad receiving game-time this afternoon, Head Coach Dave Connell was happy with how the week has started.

‘We’re delighted with the win. Czech Republic came through their Qualifying Round top of the group and are a very good side,’ Connell said.

‘We performed very well. This group of girls is battle-hardened, and over the 90 minutes I thought we were well in control. To score three goals was particularly pleasing and we’ll look to build on this performance again on Friday.

‘We are under no illusions though. The Czech Republic bring a different game to what we face in qualifying. They are very physical and technically sound, so it will be another good test for us.’

The Women’s Under 19 side are back in action against the Czech Republic on Friday afternoon, in what will be the final game before April’s Elite Phase.

Debutant Scott praise for new Head Coach Colin Bell

The Reading WFC defender made her senior international debut in Bell's first game as Head Coach, an impressive 2-0 win over Czech Republic at the Cyprus Cup.

After making her debut, Scott admitted it was a surprise to see her name on the team-sheet but 'loved every minute' of the victory.

She said: "I was ecstatic. It wasn't something I expected when I was selected for the squad as I was just looking for the experience of being away with the squad.

"When the manager put up the teamsheet, it was a bit of a surprise for me. I loved the game, enjoyed every minute of it and it's definitely a great start."

The Women's National Team face Hungary tomorrow, with kick-off at 3.30pm GMT, in their second game at the Cyprus Cup as they look to continue the momentum from the Czech win.

Having worked with Bell over the past week, Scott was full of praise for the new Head Coach despite what 'was a real tough ask for him'.

Scott continued: "He is really, really good. Different to any coach I've ever had before, he's very structured and he knows exactly what he wants from us.

"It was a real tough ask for him to have only a couple of training sessions before our game but he made it work for us against Czech Republic, hopefully it can work against Hungary."

In a tight contest, Hungary suffered a 2-0 defeat against Wales yesterday which means a win will see Ireland lead the group going into the final game against Wales.

Having made her debut, Scott hopes to play a part against Hungary tomorrow but has backed everyone in the squad to step up as she looks to her future international career.

She added: "Some of the girls had training today, the others had recovery here back at the hotel. Everyone who is in the squad could play and do really well so we need to take the confidence into the next game.

"I'd definitely like to be involved in the future. I'm really proud to be here, makes me so happy. If I can continue to impress the manager with my club side, I'd be happy with that."

The result means Ireland will now face Wales in the final group game to decide the winner after the Welsh drew with the Czech Republic.

Ireland were gifted the best chance of the game with just one minute on the clock as Megan Connolly closed the keeper down but after winning the ball, her shot was blocked.

Ireland continued to create chances as the impressive Harriet Scott, in just her second appearance for the national side, burst down the left to find Aine O'Gorman with a low cross, but the UCD Waves striker saw her shot well saved.

A minute after the break, the tireless Katie McCabe worked a neat position just outside the area after a weighted-flick from Stephanie Roche, who claimed her 50th cap, but her powerful effort was well saved.

Hungary could have won the game with just under 30 minutes to go as they were awarded a penalty after Aine O'Gorman fouled Gabriella Toth in the area but Fanni Vago's penalty went well wide of Hourihan's right-hand post.

After the final whistle, Head Coach Colin Bell was delighted with the character and the effort shown from the group.

Bell said: "I'm really pleased with the group. It was a really intensive match against a really strong side in Hungary who have played together for some time.

"They stuck to the game-plan and even when they made mistakes, the effort levels to recover was fantastic. We should have been 1-0 up at half-time if we took our chances.

"We had a little bit of luck in the second half with the penalty miss but I think we deserved as Hungary didn't create another chance in the entire 90 minutes.

"We're trying to lay the foundations. We want to stay compact and get teams on the break. When we start training together and the team gets fitter, we can then start moving the ball better and become a much better side."

Dave Connell's team are preparing for their upcoming UEFA European Championship Elite Round games and this double header will serve them well.

Ireland won the first clash between the sides earlier in the week - with a 3-0 win - but this outing didn't go exactly to plan, at least in terms of the scoreline.

Still, Connell will take a lot of positives from the performance of his young side as they zipped the ball around well and supported each other in crunch situations.

After falling behind in the first half, Ireland came roaring back with a goal from Shelbourne Ladies midfielder Alex Kavanagh on 59 minutes.

Another goal from Peamount United striker Eleanor Ryan-Doyle on 75 minutes gave Ireland hope of getting a desired result, but Czech Republic got two goals of their own.

Overall, it was a worthwhile exercise and the squad can now turn their attention to the Elite Round games in April, which will be played on home soil.

Led by Republic of Ireland Women's Under 16 Head Coach Sharon Boyle and FAI Football Development Officer Paul Keogh, the course will run in the Dublin suburb of Donabate on Tuesday, March 14.

With expert advice and guidance on offer, the participants will learn how to master the coaching of strength & conditioning for female players - which has become a key part of the modern game.

The course will mix between theory and practical sessions to deliver an insight into strength & conditioning so that every participant can leave with a basic knowledge of coaching their players in this area.

"We have recognised the importance of female-only coaching courses. The female-only environment has proven very successful with courses that we have run and I would encourage all women involved in the game to attend this very worthwhile course," said Keogh.

The popularity of women's football continues to surge with the FAI providing assistance at every level, from Aviva Soccer Sisters camps through to female-only coaching courses. This course is another addition that helps to grow the game.

'Proud' Roche ready for Wales showdown

Roche_h.jpg

The 27-year old forward has played every minute of the Cyprus Cup tournament so far, scoring the opening goal of the 2-0 win over Czech Republic on Wednesday.

It was her 13th goal for the national side and she was delighted to reach the 50-cap milestone after always having 'that belief' in herself.

The Sunderland Ladies striker said: "I'm very proud to reach 50 caps, it's been a long time coming but it's excellent for me and my family.

"I started playing with the Under-17s side when I was 14 so I've been around the international set-up quite a while. I always had that belief that I could get into the senior team when I was younger.

"Obviously, getting into the team was a great moment for me and now I've got 50 caps, that is something I can be really proud of."

Roche scored her first senior goal back in 2009, a late-winner against Kazakhstan and also netted a hat-trick against Montenegro in a 9-0 win at Tallaght Stadium last year.

Dublin-born Roche isn't settling for 50 caps and has set her sights on getting more caps under new Head Coach Colin Bell, and catch up on her team-mate Aine O'Gorman who has 92 caps.

She continued: "When I score a goal, I think I show how passionate I am about playing for the national team. I think we all show how passionate we are to play for the national side.

"I think it comes with the Irish-ness in us that everybody knows that playing for your country is one of the best things you can do. It feels like your first cap every time you play.

"I just want to keep getting more caps and with Colin as the new manager who has brought in a new style of play, I just want to be around for a lot longer. I've got a few to catch up on Aine O'Gorman so hopefully I'll get there.

"Colin is trying to put down some foundations and letting us know exactly what he wants from us. It's been really good so far and I'm really excited for what the future holds for the country."

Ireland are set to play Wales tomorrow, with kick-off at 12.30pm GMT as Colin Bell's side look to top the group and Roche admits the camp is looking forward to the test.

She added: "Wales have got a very good squad and have some excellent players. We played them in August with an under-strength squad and did well so with a few of our more familiar faces back.

"We're looking forward to the game, it's going to be a big test and we want to win the group."

Colin Bell's side will now have to wait to find out which side is the best runner-up from Group A and Group B for their final game on Wednesday, March 8th.

It was another solid performance from Ireland who have now kept three clean sheets at the Cyprus Cup and never looked like conceding in a structured and determined performance.

The match-winning moment came with just 20 minutes on the clock as centre-back Diane Caldwell picked out the run of Katie McCabe with a fantastic 60-yard pass and the Arsenal Ladies forward controlled with her left before smashing the ball high into the roof of the net.

Claire O'Riordan, who made her first international start for the Women's National Team, came off at the break for Megan Connolly to ensure a defensive second-half in difficult conditions in Paralimni.

Connolly could have scored a second half-way through the second-half when Stephanie Roche found her on the edge of the area but her effort was well saved as Ireland went on to defend the lead and win the game.

Head Colin Bell was elated with the performance who has had an unbeaten start to his managerial reign with two wins and one draw.

Bell said: "It was another fantastic performance where the players have given everything for the cause and fought until the final seconds to get the win we deserved.

"It was a fantastic goal. A fantastic ball from Diane (Caldwell) to pick out Katie McCabe and it was a fantastic finish, a goal worthy of winning any game.

"In the second-half, we had to keep things tight so we brought Megan (Connolly) in who was able to drop in and give Karen (Duggan) more of a chance to drop back and defend the way she did.

"Wales are difficult opponents, a really good team but they didn't have one real chance in the second-half which is testament to how well we played.

"We could have snatched a second at the end but I'm delighted for the team who are getting the rewards for their efforts."

The Irish face the Faroe Islands, Slovakia and host Cyprus with the eight group winners and seven runners-up with the best record against the teams first and third in their section advance to the finals to join the hosts Croatia.

O'Brien insists his side will be taking nothing for granted as they head to the Mediterranean island next week.

"All the countries at this stage of the competition see a massive prize in front of them, which is trying to qualify for the finals," said O'Brien.

"We'll have to be focused in everything we do on the training pitch and in the games. We are happy with our preparation. We got through the first phase, had assessments and training games before Christmas then two friendly games in Spain last month.

"Certain things we did well in those games and in others we can improve upon. We've got players who can score goals but our defence kept clean sheets in the last two games which is a good sign.

"At the start of the season we aimed to have a competitive squad and it has stood to us. Three games in six days is very demanding on young players so its unlikely we'll have the same 11 on the pitch every game.  We could be playing in 22-24 degrees too which is something we'll have our work done for. Cyprus will have the advantage being the home side obviously."

O'Brien is adamant that Ireland will take nothing for granted heading into the tournament.

"Some people might look at a group like this and dismiss certain opponents but in youth football any country could develop a crop of players at a certain age group and it may mean nothing in regards to their senior rankings," he added.

"Everything is geared towards game one while we'll have work done on the other opponents. We'll want a good start but the reality is that we can't underestimate any of our opponents."

McCabe sets sights on unbeaten third spot

The Women's National Team have enjoyed a fantastic Cyprus Cup tournament so far, with wins over Wales and Czech Republic, and a draw against Hungary.

The results saw Ireland top Group C which means they've qualified for the 3rd/4th placed match against North Korea, who were the highest-placed second team from Group's A and B.

Reflecting on her excellent finish against the Welsh, McCabe has praised the quality of the 60-yard pass from Diane Caldwell and lauded the team effort.

McCabe said: "It's always a tough game against Wales. We played them twice in a double header last August and got a win and a draw so we knew we could do well.

"We were really focused on what we had to do and played it out. It was a fantastic ball from Diane and the least I could do is finish it off.

"It is just a fantastic team effort. I just seem to be on the end of those moves against Wales and it is all about getting the results in the end."

Not only have Ireland topped the group but have also kept three clean sheets in Colin Bell's first three matches as Head Coach.

The Arsenal Ladies forward believes the amount of games in a short amount of time has been a great way to learn Bell's style of play with their fourth game in a week tomorrow.

The 21-year old continued: "It is really important for us to get clean sheets as that is the foundation of a good result. We've got the ability going forward with the likes of Aine, Steph, Megan Connolly and Denise.

"It's been great, we didn't have a lot of training session with him coming into the Cyprus Cup but games are great because you can learn in the situation.

"I'm sure he is learning a lot from us. What he tells us to do on the training pitch, we're taking it into the game and it's getting us results.

"We've got clean sheets, undefeated and we've topped the group so it's been great so far."

Having played nearly every minute of the tournament, McCabe says she is feeling good ahead of tomorrow's test against North Korea where Ireland will focus on themselves.

She added: "I'm feeling good, we're all feeling good. We're all at different stages of fitness at the moment as some players are in season and some are in pre-season.

"We're focused on North Korea. We know they'll be a good passing and technical side but we've got to focus on ourselves and how we're going to score goals. We're determined to finish third and I'm pretty confident we can do it."

Limerick's Late Night Leagues more than sport

Over the past number of weeks, eight teams of eight players have competed in the Futsal competition, which is a collaborative project between Limerick City and County Council, Gardaí and the FAI.

The League took place at the The Factory: Southside Youth Space in Galvone and was organised by FAI Football Development Officer Jason O’Connor and Gardaí from Roxboro Community Policing Unit aided by funding from the regeneration project.

The Late Night Leagues aim to encourage ‘at risk’ young people to participate in meaningful activities, thus reducing the potential for anti-social behaviour.

The Leagues take place four times a year, and are open to different categories catering for participants from 11 to 18+.

Jason O’Connor, FAI Football Development Officer for Limerick city, said: “We floated the idea to run a Late Night League out to some local contacts and the uptake was phenomenal. We are delighted with the people taking part and the level of integration within the southside communities. The League is about social inclusion and engagement with other people from the area as well as Gardaí in helping to break down barriers and stereotypes.”

Garda Keith McCarthy, from the Community Policing Unit at Roxboro Garda Station, said: “The Gardaí are delighted to be involved in the Late Night Leagues. It is an ideal opportunity to connect with different sections of the local community on a less formal basis. It’s about building a rapport between the participants and ourselves, trying to see behind the uniform. All the participants come from different walks of life but the League means they come together to work as a unit.”

Sean McGlynn, Project Manager with Limerick City and County Council, said: “The local authority through regeneration is delighted to be involved with the Late Night League. We see the league as an important stepping stone in breaking down barriers between people who live in the locality. The League builds up a sense of responsibility to oneself and to others, and it’s hoped the social skills learned during the League will be incorporated into everyday life. This is one of the ways that regeneration funding is being targeted in a bid to improve society as a whole.”

Note:
The Late Night League takes place during prime anti-social hours and is based around the concept of using football as a tool for social inclusion and learning. Through partnership and interagency co-operation, the Late Night Leagues aim to:

  • Divert youths from crime and anti-social behaviour
  • Encourage ‘at risk’ young people to participate in meaningful activities, thus reducing anti-social behaviour
  • Promote and further engage with youths and communities

REPORT: Korea DPR 2-0 Ireland - Fourth spot in Cyprus

Colin Bell's side fought vailantly against the highest-ranked team in the competition but conceded late goals from Wi Jong Sim and Kim Ryu Song.

The result sees the Women's National Team finish fourth in the Cyprus Cup tournament, their highest-ever finish in Colin Bell's first four games as Head Coach.

Ireland were defensive throughout much of the contest as the dangerous Kim Phyong Hwa was denied by the post in the 9th minute and she was denied again by Emma Byrne with a fantastic diving save two minutes after the break.

Ireland had few chances as Katie McCabe's 20-yard effort sailed over the bar in the 51st minute before Stephanie Roche's central free-kick was easily saved with 30 minutes remaining.

North Korea continued to increase the pressure and with 15 minutes remaining, Wi Jong Sim's cross floated over Emma Byrne and into the top corner to give the Koreans the lead.

Five minutes from the end, with Ireland pushing forward, Kim Ryu Song found space and rifled an incredible 30-yard shot into the top right-hand corner to seal the game for the Koerans.

WNT Head Coach Colin Bell said: "It's a difficult result to take, we should have got something out of the game.

"We were always going to have to be defensive against a side who play the way they do but we did that brilliantly for 75 minutes. Both goals are preventable and the players know that.

"We can do better and even though, we've had a good tournament, I know the players can do more as we can continue to work with each other in the future.

"Once again, the players have put in a fantastic effort, like they have all week and the players can be really proud of what they've achieved as they've represented their country brilliantly this week.

"It gives me great hope for the future that the longer we work together, the more we can push this team forward to some real success."

The innovative sponsorship will come as excellent news to the Republic of Ireland players who were a key part of how the partnership came about. It began when Fulfil heard that some of the senior men's players loved the bars and the partnership went from there.

Fulfil bars are the perfect fit for the player's active lifestyle with low sugar, high protein and the RDA of 9 vitamins, all while tasting like a delicious treat.

Fulfil co-founders Niall McGrath and Tom Gannon are passionate about Irish football, both of whom play and coach junior teams, and wanted to use this sponsorship to make a real difference. Through the partnership, Fulfil will give back to the football community by investing in a passing skills machine, which has been used by teams like Barcelona, Liverpool and Manchester United.

Ireland international players will use the machine for commercial activities, while the FAI will loan it out to clubs nationwide. It will also be used on match days at the Aviva Stadium to highlight the exciting sponsorship and it will feature on social media with exclusive videos being released on SportsJoe.ie of players and Irish celebrities going head to head in the Fulfil ring.

Alongside this, Fulfil branding will appear on perimeter advertising at men's senior home internationals, the sponsorship will provide the brand with access to players for promotional content and the FAI logo will also appear on Fulfil's packaging and promotional material.

FAI CEO John Delaney welcomed the agreement by saying: "I am delighted to welcome Fulfil as the official snack of the Football Association of Ireland. It's a great product from a fantastic Irish company, which is steeped in Grassroots football.

"Niall and Tom know the game from its growth in the community right up to the international scene, which makes them perfect partners for the FAI."

Speaking about the sponsorship, Fulfil co-founders, Niall McGrath and Tom Gannon, commented: "This is a landmark day for the team at Fulfil. As passionate football fans, we are very proud to become the official snack partner of the FAI.

"We are stunned at what Fulfil has accomplished to date, the brand has completely exceeded our expectations in what has been a phenomenal first year in business. We are excited to build on this success in 2017 and shine a spotlight on Irish football over the course of the next three years."

The opening weekend kicks off on Saturday, March 18 with all eyes on Shelbourne Ladies as they prepare to defend the title against Cork City WFC, Galway WFC, Kilkenny United WFC, Peamount United, UCD Waves and Wexford Youths WFC.

Set to enter into its seventh season, the Continental Tyres Women's National League will adopt a single calendar season for the first time - similar to the SSE Airtricity League.

Fran Gavin, FAI Director of Competitions, believes the growth of the League is aiding the development of women's football in Ireland at all levels.

"We are excited about the new Continental Tyres Women's National League season kicking off, as it should be really competitive again and switching to the single calendar format should result in better football being played," said Gavin.

"The League continues to go from strength to strength and that is evidenced by the rising number of girls who are being capped by the Republic of Ireland at senior, Under 19 and Under 17 level. It is a mark of the League's progression that it caters for so many international players.

"There is still more to be done to bring the League on and we are working closely with each of the clubs to make the necessary improvements. But as we prepare for the football to return, I would like to wish all of the players, coaches, administrators and volunteers the very best of luck."
