The game against Wales, which will be Ireland's final match in Group D, will be played at the Cardiff City Stadium in Cardiff, which has a total capacity of 33,280.

Last December, the FAI reached an agreement with the Football Association of Wales to secure the increased allocation - therefore Ireland supporters will take up more than 10% of the stadium capacity in Cardiff.

The FAI continues to cater for supporters who are regular attendees at away fixtures, coming from the Football Family, Supporters Clubs and Fans' Direct.

The review of the Fans' Direct scheme will be completed at the end of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying campaign with registration open until Friday, August 4 at 5pm.

Under the Away Ticketing Scheme, so far in this qualifying campaign over 4,500 loyal supporters have been supplied with tickets for the draw with Serbia in Belgrade and the victories over Moldova and Austria in Chisinau and Vienna respectively.

Serbia: 1,500 tickets allocated / 642 tickets sold
Moldova: 1,316 tickets allocated / 986 tickets sold
Austria: 3,066 tickets allocated / 3,066 tickets sold

The Away Portal will open to applications for the Georgia v Ireland game on September 2 in Tbilisi from Thursday, July 27 through to Sunday, August 6. The Georgian Football Federation will scan each supporter's ticket to provide accuracy of the supporters who attend the game.

The FAI will continue to use the allocation breakdown that has previously been in operation, as outlined below:

45 per cent distributed to supporters from affiliated football leagues and more than 2,000 clubs which fall under their remit, Board and National Council members, players/staff, Club Ireland members, and Jack Charlton Lounge patrons.

40 per cent allocated to independent supporters who are members of Republic of Ireland Soccer Supporter Clubs and Fans' Direct.

15 per cent provided to supporters travelling with the FAI's official travel partner, Abbey Travel - these supporters have their details of match attendance at away games logged should they ever decide to apply independently for tickets.

Palestinian children take part in Irishtown friendly

Gaza

Last Saturday morning FAI Development Officer Jonathan Tormey welcomed a group of kids from The Al Hilal FC Academy in Gaza to Irishtown Stadium to kick-off a 10-day tour for the soccer mad youngsters with a game against Iveagh Trust FC.

The trip has been mainly organised by Gaza Action Ireland but has gained a lot of support from football clubs and communities across Ireland. The game on Saturday was attended by the Lord Mayor of Dublin Michael MacDonncha, the Lord Layor of Ringsend Tony McDonald and Councillor Chris Andrews.

Councillor Chris Andrews was very grateful to both Iveagh Trust FC for playing both their parts in making the game happen in such a short space of time and FAI development officer Jonathan Tormey for organising the event.

The game itself was a great spectacle with the Gaza kids showing some fantastic skills, running out worthy winners against a very welcoming and determined Iveagh Trust side.

The children from Gaza had been travelling for 48 hours prior to the game and unfortunately had their Head Coach and captain refused travel permits at the airport in Israel but they got on with things and showed some fantastic talent.

The boys have a fully packed schedule which culminates in the boys being guests at the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division match between Shamrock Rovers F.C.and Derry City Football Club on Friday, August 4th in Tallaght Stadium.

Byrne announces retirement from international football

Byrne_h.jpg

The 38-year-old has opted to call time on a stellar international career that has amassed 134 senior caps - which is a record total for the Women's National Team.

Byrne made her senior debut at the age of 16 in March 1996 and went on to have a profound impact on women's football in Ireland by becoming a role model for her performances on the pitch.

The Kildare native is also one of the most decorated Irish players at club level having won 11 English League titles and the UEFA Women's Champions League, amongst many other honours, with Arsenal Ladies.

Reflecting upon her career and the decision to step away, Byrne said: "It can only be a positive thing to look back on how many caps I got and how long I got to play at the highest level whilst representing my country.

"I have made some great friendships along the way, learned a lot from so many people, and I always loved being involved with the Ireland team. Unfortunately we never managed to qualify for a major tournament - we went close against Iceland in a play-off - but I'll treasure the memories and experiences of every time I played for Ireland.

"It's a great achievement to step down having broken the all-time appearance record, but it's time to give other girls an opportunity to stake their claim in the team. I'll miss walking out to represent my country and all of the friends that I made, but I'm proud of my time with the team."

Tony Fitzgerald, FAI President, hailed Byrne for her remarkable longevity at such a high level. "Emma has been a credit to Women's football for many years and she will be sadly missed as she prepares to hang up her gloves.

"To play for Ireland for such a long time and produce the type of performances that she did says a lot about Emma's desire to represent her country. She was someone who young girls looked up to and she will forever be remembered as one of Irish football's great servants."

John Delaney, FAI CEO, stated: "To pull on the Ireland jersey is a special thing, but to do it on 134 occasions is quite remarkable. Similar to Robbie Keane and Shay Given, who retired from international football last year, Emma has earned her right to be described as an Irish legend.

"Women's football has made huge strides in recent years and we continue to work hard to advance the game at all levels. For that to happen we need players, coaches, administrators and volunteers to have the same level of commitment that Emma showed over two decades with the Women's Senior Team, to help drive us forward.

"Emma was a fantastic goalkeeper and ambassador for the women's game. I would like to thank Emma for her tremendous service and wish her and her family the very best for the future."

Niamh O'Donoghue, Chairperson of the Women's Football Committee, said: "I'm sorry to hear of Emma's decision to retire from international football.

"From the time that she first burst onto the underage international stage at age 14 she has been a fantastic servant to the women's game, representing her country at every age level and winning multiple honours at club level.

"She has always been a tremendous role model for young girls and I wish her continued success in the game and look forward to seeing her contribute as a coach, educator and commentator in the future."

Colin Bell, Ireland WNT Head Coach, paid tribute to Byrne by saying: "I'd like to thank Emma for her professionalism and her contribution to the squad in the short time that I've been the Head Coach.

"Emma's achievements at international level are rarely seen in the game and for her to represent her country over the course of 21 years is something most of us can only dream of.

"As we head into a new qualification campaign for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup, I think the timing for her decision is correct. Going forward, Marie Hourihan will be the new No.1 but it's important we continue to see Amanda Budden and Amanda McQuillan progress and challenge for that spot."

McCabe named as new captain for the WNT

The 21-year old has been selected as the new captain following the retirement of Emma Byrne yesterday and will lead the side into the 2019 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, with defender Diane Caldwell vice-captain.

McCabe has been one of Ireland's most outstanding players since breaking through to the senior squad in March 2015 and scored in the 1-0 win over Wales at the Cyprus Cup this year.

Contracted to Arsenal Ladies, McCabe has recently moved on loan to Scottish side Glasgow City FC in order to get more game-time before the qualification campaign begins in September against Northern Ireland.

Republic of Ireland WNT Head Coach Colin Bell said: "Katie has been a player I've really enjoyed working with during my time as Head Coach in Ireland.

"On the pitch, she is one of the best players in the team and already leads from the front with her excellent ability and performances, which we've seen already this year.

"Off the pitch, I want to see her grow into the role of captain and lead the team forward. It's an important role and I believe she has all the right attributes to push this team forward as we head into the 2019 World Cup qualification campaign.

"She's a great character who all the players respond to and I know the rest of the squad will be right behind her as she steps into the captain's role."

WNT captain Katie McCabe said: "It's a huge honour to have been selected to be captain of the national team. It's a huge moment for me personally but also my family who have always supported me on my football journey.

"I'd like to also thank Emma Byrne for her guidance and leadership as captain over the last few years, and I hope I can fill her boots for the team.

"I can't wait to lead out the team in the upcoming World Cup qualifier and hopefully lead the Republic of Ireland WNT to their first major Championships.

"I'd like to thank Head Coach Colin Bell for the faith he has shown in me and I'll be looking to repay that faith over the years."

Now in its 44th year, the competition offers up the first piece of in-season silverware for SSE Airtricity League clubs and the final will be broadcast live on eir Sport.

The SSE Airtricity League Premier Division games originally scheduled for Friday, September 15 involving Cork City v Dundalk and St Patrick's Athletic v Shamrock Rovers will be rescheduled in due course.

Dundalk have won the EA SPORTS Cup five times overall, while Shamrock Rovers have two successes to their name, while both teams have been on the losing side for a collective 11 times.

This year's final promises to be a thrilling encounter, especially if the semi-finals were a marker as Dundalk overcame Galway United and Rovers left it very late to beat Cork City in extra-time.

As a way to promote the competition, the semi-final between Rovers and Cork was live streamed on the SSE Airtricity League Facebook page and it proved to be hugely popular with over 1.1million people reached.

The live stream, which included live commentary from FAI Communications Executive Kieran Crowley and St Patrick's Athletic winger Conan Byrne, had 90,493 total views with over 12.5% of viewers tuning in from overseas.

ROUND-UP: Crumlin shock Wexford in FAI Cup

Wexford 1-2 Crumlin United

An 87th minute goal from Jake Donnelly fired Crumlin United into the second round of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Senior Cup after an absorbing tie in Ferrycarrig Park on Friday evening.

The hosts will be kicking themselves though, with both Aaron Dobbs and Dean Kelly missing second-half penalties before Donnelly's late winner.

The shock was on the cards when David Vickery fired the Dubliners in front on 25 minutes.Jake Donnelly whipped in a free-kick from the right wing, which fell kindly for Vickery, and he blasted the ball past goalkeeper Danny Bolger.

It only took the hosts four minutes to drag themselves back on level terms, with Owen McCormack getting on the end of Dean Kelly's teasing free-kick and powering a header beyond Michael Quinn.

Quinn then did brilliantly to deny Aaron Dobbs from the penalty spot just before the hour mark, and was quickly back on his feet to thwart the striker's follow-up and he later foiled Dean Kelly from the spot.

Finn Harps 4-3 Bohemians

Finn Harps booked their place in the second round of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup after an extra-time win over Bohemians.

Bohemians will be ruing a missed opportunity after Dinny Corcoran put the Dublin side ahead after 25 minutes. The home side would go into the break ahead though after Killian Cantwell and Sean Houston's penalty put Ollie Horgan's side ahead.

Corcoran is in fine form this campaign for the Dalymount Park and he notched an impressive brace shortly after break to level the tie once again.

Bohs thought they had snatched victory at Ballybofey as 14 minutes from time as Derek Pender popped up to put the away side back in front.

Deep into injury-time, Harps were handed a FAI Cup life-time as Sean Houston scored his second penalty of the game to force the game into extra-time.

Player of the Month nominee Eddie Dsane settled the tie after 12 minutes of extra time with a wonderful free-kick to put the side in the pot for the next round.

Shamrock Rovers 1-0 Glenville

Graham Burke’s early goal failed to open the floodgates as Shamrock Rovers, despite owning the ball, laboured into the second round of the FAI Cup against their Leinster Senior League opponents Glenville at Tallaght Stadium.

Hoops wasted little time in troubling the visitors’ with Glenville keeper Patrick Whelan was off his line promptly to smother the ball at the feet of Gary Shaw early before taking taking lead on 13 minutes.

Little did they know it would be the only score of the game. It stemmed from Rovers’ first corner of the night. Ronan Finn and Dean Carpenter had initial shots gallanted blocked by the Glenville defence.

But the ball ran for Burke who blasted it into the roof of the net off his trusted left foot. Michael O’Connor and Shaw wasted good opportunities before half-time for Rovers.

A real chance to level was then blown by Glenville two minutes into the second half.Tomer Chencinski was caught off his line and the retreating Rovers’ keeper had Carpenter to thank for getting back to block Robert Murtagh's shot.

Whelan then made saves from Michael O’Connor, Burke and Finn as Rovers upped the pressure, but just couldn’t find the net again.

Waterford 0-3 Shelbourne

Three second-half goals ensured Shelbourne advanced to the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup second round after a 3-0 win away to Waterford FC.

Goals from Chris Lyons, Jamie Doyle and James English saw Owen Heary’s side through. Patrick McClean, Dean O’Halloran and Paul Keegan went close for the home side in the first half, before Chris Lyons had the best chance of the half for Shelbourne but he couldn’t find he target.

Shelbourne were fast out of the blocks and took the lead just 26 seconds into the second half. Chris Lyons took advantage of defensive mistake to brilliantly finish past Waterford keeper McLoughlin into the back of the net.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men after 65 minutes when midfielder Niall Lanigan was given a second yellow card.

Waterford had the chance to equalise on 75 minutes from the penalty spot after Mark O’Sullivan was fouled, but David McDaid’s penalty was well saved by Dean Delany.

And just four minutes later, Shelbourne made it 2-0 when Mark Hughes whipped in the corner hat found the head of Jamie Doyle to head past Waterford keeper McLoughlin. And James English took advantage of a defensive mix-up to fire into the empty net to make it 3-0.

Cabinteely 3-1 UCD

Cabinteely progressed through the first round of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup with an impressive 3-1 win over South Dublin rivals UCD.

The hosts had the first chance to break the deadlock within two minutes. Clever play from Waters to make space followed by a perfectly weighted ball found Dean Casey through on the left.

His centre, though, evaded Swan whose outstretched leg was just short of turning the ball home. UCD then grew into the game and just about edged the first half. A series of corners ended with Liam Scales and Georgie Kelly heading off target.

Not too long later another couple of corners in succession saw Neil Farrgiua find Robert Manley free at the near post, only for him to head over when he really should have found the target.

Manley again had the chance to put the Students ahead after a smart cut-back from Farrgiua, but he scuffed his effort and saw his shot blocked. Cabinteely took the lead just before half time with a clinical counterattack.

Swan fed Waters through and the former UCD man still had plenty to do, but as Niall Corbet attempted to close him down Cabo’s marksman elegantly dinked the ball over the ‘keeper to open the scoring.

Shortly after the restart Dolan doubled his side’s lead.Another well-worked counterattack saw Casey through only for his effort to be well-stopped by Corbet, who could only watch on as Dolan arrived in perfect time to tap into an open goal.

As the second half picked up pace, UCD pulled one back through former Cabinteely forward Hanrahan. The Students took their turn to counterattack and Farrgiua’s precise centre found the No.10 who finished well.

Almost immediately after, Cabinteely restored their two-goal advantage through Swan. Jack Watson found space in the box and deceived the defence with a cut-back, leaving Swan to send the ball beyond Corbet.

Longford Town 4-2 Sligo Rovers (AET)

Peter Hopkins and Kealan Dillon hit extra time goals as Longford Town dumped Premier Division Sligo Rovers out of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup in a six goal thriller at City Calling Stadium.

Longford took the lead on 26 minutes when skipper Dean Zambra slipped Karl Chambers in behind the Sligo defence to calmly slide the ball past Micheal Schlingermann. The lead lasted five minutes as Daniel Kearns got his head to captain John Russell’s cross to flick home Sligo’s equaliser.

Benny Igiehon headed tamely over before making amends to put Sligo in front on 42 minutes when volleying to the net from close range from Regan Donelon's cross. Schlingermann rescued Sligo with a super save on 62 minutes, getting down well to his right to push away Jake Kelly’s shot on the turn.

But Town levelled on 83 minutes when Sam Verdon looped a header to the net from the Kelly’s cross. Town keeper Jack Brady then forced extra-time when brilliantly tipping Jamie McDonagh’s shot onto the bar and out for a corner.Hopkins put Town back in front on 105 minutes, working a one-two with Davy O’Sullivan down the left to run on and blast his shot to the net for a big first goal for the club.

Sligo then had McDonagh shown a second yellow card on 114 minutes.Three minutes later substitute Dillon raced through onto O’Sullivan’s pass to shoot home Town’s fourth goal and put them into the hat for the second round draw.

Bangor Celtic 3-2 Everton

An 86th-minute goal from substitute Michael Fox provided decisive at the Iveagh Grounds, as Bangor Celtic completed a remarkable comeback against Everton AFC.

Everton skipper Jason Sexton had broken the deadlock on 19 minutes, and midfielder Lawrence Fitzpatrick made it 2-0 five minutes later.

The Cork men still led with nine minutes left but a powerful finish by Caleb Murray offered the Crumlin outfit a lifeline.

Bangor equalised through Laurence Dunne on 85 minutes, and after Fox's goal from the next attack, a deflated Everton lost Sexton to a red card in stoppage time.

Bray Wanderers 0-1 Cork City

A little over 500 people turned up at the Carlisle Grounds to witness Kieran Sadlier nudge Cork City closer to fulfilling their double dream.

The Leesiders attacking wizard played both the villain and the hero of the piece as he missed a penalty before bagging the winner just three minutes later.City's penalty was well earned as Shane Griffin and Sadlier played a one-two.

The former glided by Tim Clancy before being bundled over by Aaron Greene but Sadlier's 12-yarder was kept out by Lee Steacy.

It only took Sadlier three minutes to make amends though as he picked up possession inside the area and curled a brilliant finish to the far corner.

Wanderers competed with Cork but never looked like beating Mark McNulty so it it City who march on and deservedly so. The league title looks to be wrapped up, can they retain the FAI Cup too?

Cobh Ramblers 0-3 Limerick

Limerick cruised into the second round of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup as the comprehensively defeated Cobh Ramblers at St Colman’s Park on Saturday evening.

The SSE Airtricity League Premier Division side edged into the lead after just 13 minutes when Garbhan Coughlan raced onto a long pass over the top of the Ramblers defence before calmly clipping the ball over the keeper and into the net.

Coughlan doubled his side’s advantage after 32 minutes when he fired past Paul Hunt from close range after keeper parried the ball straight to the attacker under pressure from Chiedozie Ogbene.

And Ogbene added a third for his side after 37 minutes when he coolly stroked Barry Cotter’s superb cross from the right home at the near post to seal his sides place in the draw for the next phase.

Ballincollig 0-5 Athlone Town

Roddy Collins and his Athlone Town side comfortably avoided a shock at CIT, with five different scorers accounting for Ballincollig.

Etanda Nkololo, Dragos Sfrijan, Rory Gaffey, Rob Spellman and Conor Layng were all on target.

Wide player Nkololo and Sfrijan combined to settle nerves with two goals in six minutes early on, before Gaffey and Spellman also netted in quick succession midway through the second-half to kill off any chance of a comeback.

Layng added the fifth in injury time.

Cobh Wanderers 3-0 Killarney Celtic

Cobh Wanderers breezed into the second round of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup as they comprehensively defeated Killarney Celtic 3-0 at Old Church Park on Saturday afternoon.

First half goals from Conor Meade, James Stroat and a David Stack penalty was enough to deservedly seal the Munster Senior League Premier Division club’s place in the draw for the next stage.

It was Cobh who began the game the better side and they almost took the lead after just three minutes but Celtic goalkeeper Roy Kelleher did well to smother James Stroat’s lob attempt.

The visitors went close to taking the lead against the run of play midway through the half but after a mix up in defence, Pa McGrath’s clever overhead kick was cleared off the line by the recovering Eoin Hastings.

Wanderers responded well to that let off and they edged in front after the half an hour mark.

David Stack’s superb free kick from the right flank found the run of Conor Meade and the attacker made no mistake, glancing his header into the bottom left corner of the net.

The FAI intermediate Cup finalists doubled their advantage within a minute of scoring the first as Conor Meade sent James Stroat through on goal and the forward expertly drilled his half volley past the keeper from the edge of the box.

Cobh all but sealed their place in the second round deep into injury time at the end of the opening period as they grabbed a third through David Stack, who blasted his penalty into the bottom right corner after Dave Curran had been fouled in the area.

The second 45 was rather uneventful as Michael Deasy’s men took the sting out of the game at three goals to the good.A Wayne Sparling header, which drifted just the far post, was as close as Killarney came to grabbing a consolation as Cobh safely progressed.

Dundalk 4-0 Derry City

A brace from John Mountney a penalty from David McMillan and a great individual goal from Michael Duffy secured Dundalk's passage to the next round of the FAI at Oriel Park, the Candystripes would be ruing missed chances in what was an entertaining match.

The game was barely started when the hosts were ahead. A brilliant through ball by Patrick McEleney was sent into the path of Sean Gannon whose right sided cross was tapped in by John Mountney to open the scoring.

Dundalk continued to press for a second with Michael Duffy having five attempts on goal in succession all of which evaded the back of the net, The highlight of those coming on the 27th minute when we hit the post with a curling effort from a free kick which smashed off the upright with Doherty left stranded.

Dundalk did have a big let off when Ronan Curtis' curling free kick just went over the bar which silenced the home crowd. The second half continued as the first with Dundalk pressing on the front foot and got their second after a scramble in the box from a corner, McMillan was fouled and the referee pointed to the spot.

The Dundalk hit man smashed it to the roof of the net to extend Dundalk's lead. As the game wore on Dundalk continued to press and got rewards with a long range effort from Mountney flew past Doherty to give Dundalk's third on the night.

The goals were not finished when right on the stroke of full time if there was a player who deserved a goal it was Michael Duffy, he worked tirelessly all day with a brilliant run and finish from the man of the match. This was the kind of performance that Dundalk fans craved for to start their cup run. They will only focus on one game at a time but Stephen Kenny will have his sights set on the Aviva as a goal this season.

Portmarnock 0-2 St. Patrick's Athletic

Portmarnock pushed SSE Airtricity League Premier Division side St. Patrick's Athletic all the way as Pats secured their spot in the second round.

The non-league side battled all the way with Pats in front of a good crowd at Paddy's Hill in the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup.

Christy Fagan put Pats ahead in the final minute of the first-half and Kurtis Byrne secured the win for Liam Buckley's side three minutes from time.

Killester United 3-3 Galway United (6-7 pens)

Killester United almost provided a FAI Cup giant-killing but SSE Airtricity League Premier Division side Galway United prevailed on penalties.

It was an incredible game which started brilliantly for Killester after Stephen Chambers fired home when the Galway failed to deal with a long throw in the first minute.

Killester kept Galway out and could have been 2-0 up in the 13th minute after a goal-mouth scramble and the Premier Division side luckily scrambled the ball away on the line.

Shane Keegan's side grew into the game and finally equalised in the 72nd minute after Jonah Ayunga was fouled in the area and Ronan Murray stepped up to slot home.

The Tribesmen went ahead six minutes later as Ayunga headed the ball down for Murray to find the net from close range. However, Killester wouldn't lie down and levelled five minutes later as Lenny McMillan headed home from a free-kick.

In a pulsating final 15 minutes of the game, Murray notched his hat-trick with two minutes remaining as his 30-yard free-kick found the top corner.

But once again, Killester levelled. Chambers scored in the first minute of the game and had to wait a full 90 minutes to get a brace as he scored in injury time.

Extra-time failed to find a winner with chances for either side so the game was decided by penalties. Ayunga found the winning touch for Galway as his penalty secured a second round spot in the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup, Galway winning 7-6 on penalties.

Evergreen 0-4 Drogheda United

Drogheda United made sure of their place in round two of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup with a solid performance against Kilkenny junior side Evergreen.

The SSE Airtricity League’s Premier Division side delivered a late charge which saw them stifle the city side and leave the Kells Road with a solid win.

Drogheda were quick to stamp their authority on the game, taking just eight minutes to go in front. Chris Mulhall broke the deadlock, timing his run to latch on to Conor Kane’s clever pass before slipping the ball past netminder Philly Johnston.

With Evergreen pressing for an equaliser, United struck on the counter and doubled their lead with less than 20 minutes to play. Sub Ryan Masterson was barely on the pitch when he chased down a long clearance and, with his first touch, lofted the ball over the advancing Johnston.

Drogheda were in full flight at that stage, and made it 3-0 when Mulhall grabbed his second goal nine minutes from time. Johnston did well to parry Masterson’s venomous shot from point-blank range, but could do little to prevent Mullally from gleefully turning the rebound home.

Pete Mahon’s side finished with a flourish and made sure of their place in the second round when sub Mark Doyle powerfully headed home from an Adam Wixted corner four minutes from time.

Bluebell United 3-0 Sheriff YC

Bluebell United cruised into the second round of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup after a convincing 3-0 win over Sheriff YC.

A first-half brace from Gary Seery saw Bluebell comfortably ahead at the break in the 12pm kick-off at the Iveagh Grounds.

Bluebell sealed their place in the second round of the cup thanks to a second-half penalty Dean Ebbe in the 57th minute.

The second round draw will take place tonight on Soccer Republic on RTE Player with the show beginning at 6.30pm.

Colin Bell’s Women’s team open their campaign against Mexico in Hsinchu County Second Stadium (09.00 Irish Time) before Greg Yelverton leads his side out against old foes France in New Taipei City Xinzhuang Stadium (12.30 Irish Time).

Both games will be streamed live through the FAI Third Level Football Facebook page as part of the FAI’s in-depth coverage of the Games where for the first time all games for Team Ireland’s Men’s and Women’s football sides are being broadcast live to Irish viewers.

Having arrived on-site last Saturday, both sides have had just under a week to acclimatise to the intense heat and humidity, with temperatures ranging from the low-thirties to forty degrees celsius and humidity levels in the nineties. The Women’s game will kick off in the late afternoon locally with the Men’s following under the shroud of nightfall.

Bell has a full squad to select from with Amber Barrett captaining the side and July’s Continental Tyres Women’s National League Player of the Month Aisling Frawley also in contention for a starting place. Speaking on his team selection Bell said “All of the girls have done really well so far. I know that we are going to need all of them. It’s going to be a hard tournament in this weather. Everybody is going to need to be alert and ready to go.

“They have very fast strikers, they try to keep the pace quite high. We have to try adapt a style of play to maybe slow things down to spoil the rhythm of the Mexicans. I think they will just try go for us as quickly as possible. We are playing at 4pm, nearly the hottest period of the day but we know that and we prepared for that and I just hope the girls can do themselves credit and justice”

Speaking on his match venue Yelverton said “it is fantastic, it’s a unique setting. we are in the middle of the city so it is warm and humid. It is a newly laid astroturf and we are looking forward to playing on it after training on it tonight”. Yelverton will have nineteen players to select from with UCC’s Collingwood Cup captain Sean O’Mahony set to sit out the game. Speaking upon the options at his disposal, the Corkman said “I’ve got my starting eleven in my head, maybe one or two positions I may tweak a bit. We’ll name the team before we arrive and I’m sure the lads will be eager to hear if they are starting themselves”.

Women's side draw with Mexico in WUG opener

WUG Opener

Mexico dominated for large parts of the game but were more often then not restricted to long range efforts which Amanda Budden dealt with comfortably on each occasion. Ireland’s first sign of an opening came when Claire O’Riordan picked up the ball 30 yards out. The Wexford Youths striker knocked the ball into the path of the overlapping Niamh McLaughlin with the Derry native bursting through the Mexican defence but her final effort couldn’t trouble the Mexican goalkeeper Ofelia Solis.

Ireland were hit a massive blow five minutes before half time when the energetic McLaughlin was forced to be substituted with a dead leg. The Northumbria University Masters student will face a fitness test to make Sunday’s now crucial encounter with Canada.

Ireland looked comfortable with containing the Mexican threat in the second period with the creativity of the North American outfit beginning to wane in thirty-two degrees celsius heat. The back three of Claire Walsh, Shauna Fox and Rebekah Carroll stood firm which forced the Mexicans to try their luck from distance with Budden relatively comfortable barring a Diana Lopez effort which smashed off the crossbar before flying out of play.

Ireland nearly completed the perfect smash and grab with twenty minutes to go when captain Amber Barrett raced through on goal with only the keeper to beat but the Donegal striker’s touch let her down and the ball was collected by Solis.

Ireland will go into Sunday morning’s clash with Canada knowing that three points will guarantee them a place in the Quarter Finals. Anything less will mean that the Girls in Green will be anxiously watching out for the result of Tuesday’s clash between Mexico and Canada.

Men's team draw with France in first WUG game

Ireland and France played out an entertaining tactical battle under the lights of New Taipei City Xinzhuang Stadium in the opening tie of Pool A of the World University Games Men’s Football.

Both sides had chances to take the spoils, with Irish keeper Ian Molloy pulling off a number of excellent saves to ensure that his side maintained their initial target of qualifying for the Quarter Finals of the competition. Speaking after the game, the IT Blanchardstown student said, “I thought the boys put in a great shift tonight. In particular, the two centre halves Ross Taheny and Sean McLoughlin were unbelievable in front of me.”

Ireland had chances themselves in tough conditions with temperatures still in the thirties despite it being nightfall. Sean McLoughlin had a header from a Jason McClelland free kick which just lacked the power required to trouble French goalkeeper Brice Cognard. McClelland himself had a wonderful opportunity that had Cognard at full stretch to tip it around the post for a corner.

Head Coach Greg Yelverton was immensely proud of the performance that his team produced under the circumstances. “It was a great game to watch. The main objective was not to lose the game. We’re still here at 10pm at night and it is still thirty-two degrees.”

In the other game in the pool, Mexico defeated hosts Taipei by three goals to nil, to set up a mouthwatering clash with Ireland on Monday. “It’s just about rest and recovery right now. We’ll do a recovery session tomorrow morning before the tournament opening ceremony. Then we will start to focus on Mexico.”

Ireland - Molloy, Dempsey (Nugent 61’), Taheny, McLaughlin, Kinneen, Dunne, Hollywood (McKeown 70’), Daly-Butz (Doyle 69’), O’Connor, McClelland (Barry 86’), O’Sullivan.

Subs Unused: Kearns (GK), Brookes, Lyons, McAuliffe.

France - Cognard, Blasco (Minselebe 87’), Denis, Feneuil, Garcin (Thibault 54’), Valera (Chastang 76’), Bassin, Canada, Chevalier, Gotisbehere, Sanson.

Late goal sinks Ireland at WUG

Jetta Berrill

A goal from Joelle Gosselin on 64 minutes sends Canada to the top of Pool B with Ireland needing today's opponents to defeat Mexico in their encounter on Tuesday again in Fu Jen. 2015's fourth placed finishers are now qualified for the Quarter Finals.

Ireland started very brightly with UCD's Jetta Berrill finding plenty of success down the right hand side. One of her crosses was half cleared to Clare Kinsella who let fly from 30 yards straight down the throat of Sarah Dilling, the Canadian keeper.

Canada had chances of their own with Marie Alidou Danjou finding some space in front of the Ireland defence to call Amanda Budden into action. There was a moment of panic when Gosselin challenged Budden for a ball which the Cork keeper couldn't collect and there were anxious moments as the ball bounced around before being finally cleared.

Berrill continued to be a threat for the Irish and another cross was half punched away by GK with the ball falling to Amber Barrett who couldn't control her effort.

Into the second half and Canada who were playing their first game, began to assert themselves and Budden was forced into a brilliant double save on the hour mark from Arielle Roy Petitclerc. A few moments later and the North American side took the lead when a loose back pass put Gosselin through and she made no mistake in finishing.

Ireland went in search of an equaliser with Bell emptying his bench to assist Barrett up top with Claire O'Riordan, Eleanor Ryan-Doyle and Rianna Jarrett all being sent on to try and bring the game back on to level terms but despite the firepower on the pitch, Ireland couldn't make the breakthrough and currently sit bottom of Pool B.

Ireland: Budden, Berrill, Walsh, Fox, Carroll, Mustaki, McNamara (Jarrett 79'), Frawley (O'Riordan 68'), McLaughlin (McCarthy 74'), Kinsella (Ryan-Doyle 86'), Barrett.

Subs Unused: Badana (GK), Nolan, Clancy, Byrne, Webb.

Canada: Dilling, J Labbe, Roy, Koehler, Alidou Danjou (Schellenberg 88'), Gosselin (E Labbe 80'), Roy Petitclerc, Lagarde (Brown 68'), Callender, Klasios (Liguori HT), Bordeleau.

FootballForAll_Launch.jpg

Made up of five pillars (Participation, Organisational Development, Education, High Performance, Communications & Promotion), the Strategy aims to build on the fantastic work that has been done in all facets of the Football For All programme to promote inclusion in football on a far greater scale.

Catering for anyone with a disability who wants to play football, the programme has made huge strides since its inception in 2002 with more players than ever before involved, over 35 clubs around the country, and notable progression made at international level.

FAI CEO John Delaney said: "The Football For All programme has been a big success story for the FAI in recent years with excellent work being done all around the country. It was an honour to launch the new Strategy, which will help the programme grow even more and enable us to cater for more players in communities that deserve to have the opportunity to play football should they want to.

"The programme includes a variety of disciplines including Cerebral Palsy, Blind, Deaf, Powerchair, Amputee, Frame Football and many more. And that shows just how inclusive the programme is. We are thankful for the support of Government, our sponsors Tetrarch Hospitality, and all of the volunteers who help us to maintain this programme and we look forward to working with them in the future."

Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross said: "As Minister for Sport, I want to ensure that everybody, regardless of their ability or background, is provided with opportunities to participate in sport and to share in the benefits that physical activity can bring.

"I want to acknowledge the great work the FAI is doing in making football available in so many communities around the country. It has developed excellent national programmes, including Football For All, that provides opportunities for so many people to participate in sport."

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin said: "It is extremely important that people with disabilities have every opportunity to participate in sport and physical activity for all the same reasons as for those who do not have a disability.

"The FAI has been using football as a way to effect social inclusion by developing football opportunities for all players with a disability and has had a hugely positive impact for all its participants and for society."

Ahead of the UEFA Women's U19 Championship Final, representatives from women's grassroots leagues and clubs gathered in the National Stadium in Belfast for a workshop which focussed on increasing participation and retention.  The Workshop was facilitated and delivered by UEFA's Grow 2020 team Ahead of the UEFA Women's U19 Championship Final, representatives from women's grassroots leagues and clubs gathered in the National Stadium in Belfast for a workshop which focussed on increasing participation and retention.  The Workshop was facilitated and delivered by UEFA's Grow 2020 team.

The workshop which was facilitated by UEFA's Noel Mooney, was delivered by Oleks Kucheriavyi from UEFA and Hannah Simpson, CEO of The West Riding FA in England.

The main focus was on player recruitment and retention, it gave some great examples of successes from other countries, with a particular focus on how best to accommodate a wide variety of players in an ever changing society.

The workshop also provided the opportunity for debate and discussion amongst the participants, particularly on the area of club and league development in Ireland.  This gave us the opportunity to discuss club and league development and what was needed to bring women's football in Ireland to the next level with fellow stakeholders from across Europe.

Speaking following the workshop, the FAI’s Head of Women’s Football, Sue Ronan, said, “The UEFA Grow Workshop was a great event.  It enabled us the opportunity to get some of the key volunteers working in underage women's football in Ireland around the table for some very positive discussions and interaction.  All those present felt they got a lot of 'takeaways' from the workshop which I've no doubt will help them further develop their leagues and clubs.

“Of course a big bonus from the day was getting to see at first hand two of the top underage nations in European football play in the final of the European Championships, a match that proved to be very exciting.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank the UEFA GROW2020 team for facilitating this workshop and for their continued support of women's football in Ireland.  I'd also like to thank all at the IFA for accommodating us at their National Stadium.”
