Aviva is calling on girls between the ages of 6 and 14 years old to sign up and get involved.

Now in its 12th year, the initiative, which is designed to give girls the opportunity to develop their skills, have fun, meet new people and stay active, has proved to be hugely popular with record participation numbers hit last year.

With 140 camps taking place nationwide this year - increased from 125 camps in 2017 - the hope is to provide more girls with a platform to get involved with the beautiful game. The camps will run for two full days during the Easter school break and are open to girls of all abilities and levels of technique.

The participants will enjoy an action-packed two days overseen by Garda-vetted and experienced coaches. Each participant will receive a full Aviva FAI Soccer Sisters kit, which includes a limited edition jersey and a football. At the end of the camp, each girl will be presented with an official Aviva FAI Soccer Sisters certificate signed by a Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team player and Sue Ronan, FAI’s Head of Women’s Football.

Ireland WNT midfielder Tyler Toland said: "Having been a Soccer Sister myself, I know first-hand how these camps can help girls fall in love with the sport. Football is a fantastic game that has brought so much positivity to my own life and getting involved at a young age has been a key part of this."

Mark Russell, Sponsorship Manager, Aviva Ireland, said: "Aviva is delighted to be involved with Soccer Sisters as we enter our 12th year. We want to help expand the reach of the Soccer Sisters camps across the country and with 140 camps in 2018 we hope to get over 4,000 young girls playing. The Soccer Sisters initiative aims to introduce new players to the game but it’s also about fostering the enjoyment of those already involved to ensure we keep young girls involved in sport and hopefully create future holders of the green."

Cork City launch their More Than A Club project

The Leesiders have been selected alongside Irish rivals Bohemians and Welsh clubs Conwy Borough FC and Haverfordwest County AFC to pioneer this project which will run for an initial 18 month period.

This project is supported by the Ireland Wales European Territorial Co-Operation programme, which aims to strengthen collaboration between Ireland and Wales to address common economic and social challenges in these local areas.

Following consultation with every League of Ireland club within the Ireland Wales Cooperation Area, Cork City and Bohemians were the two nominated to pioneer this pilot programme.

And speaking at the launch of this new Cork City Football Enterprise, which is an EU funded collaboration between the FAI and Cork City FC, Vice President of the FAI Donal Conway admitted it wasn’t by chance that these were the two clubs selected.

“This programme has two Irish clubs Cork City and Bohemians and it’s not by accident that they were the two clubs chosen,” admitted Conway.

“It reflects on them, it reflects on their community involvement over the last number of years and it reflects on what we saw in their strategic plans when they were submitted to us.

“So it’s not an accident, it wasn’t two names pulled out of a hat. They’re the two clubs because they deserve to be the two clubs.

“We are delighted that this is launching. It’s being funded by the European Development Fund and I am very confident that this club along with Bohemians is equipped to add that social dividend.

“Cork City have a great brand and I would like to think this will enhance the brand and lead to the club becoming more sustainable.”

It is hoped by the FAI that this new project developed in cooperation with City and Bohemians will act as a flagship model and will eventually encourage other SSE Airtricity League clubs to follow suit.

Following this launch, Cork City are looking to having the first of these five social programmes up and running in the next few weeks beginning with Walking Football which looks at getting older people active whilst the Book Of You will give senior citizens an opportunity to recall their favourite sporting memories.

Other programmes include Numeracy Through Football, and Apps For Good Health which are both aimed at primary school children whilst the Run The Club Scheme will help teach those between the ages of 16 and 24 about what happens behind the scenes at these clubs.

In order to run these activities, the clubs have been provided with two full time and two part-time staff for the duration of these project.

And also speaking at this launch at the Cork International Hotel, Erika Ní Thuama (pictured above), who is now the Football Enterprise Coordinator at Cork City, admitted she is pleased with how things have progressed so far and is excited about the future.

“I’m absolutely delighted with it. It was a really good turnout but the best thing for me was the positive reaction everyone is giving to this more than a club project,” declared Ní Thuama, who has been volunteering at the club for almost 20 years.

“We had a lot of different people from different backgrounds here today and everyone is giving really positive feedback about how they can get involved and support us.

“We all know what Cork City FC is what they can do on the pitch and what they can do off the pitch. What this project is about really is about taking the football club and its standing in society in Cork city and county and about giving back to the community.

“It’s a way of including everybody across all communities within Cork and showing them that Football is a universal sport. So no matter how old you are or where you come from it doesn’t matter.

“For us coming in as FAI Staff and working with Cork City, the club have been so behind this that we have been made feel a part of the team the moment we walked in. The people can’t do enough to try and help us.

“Everyone can see here you had Paul Wycherley the General Manager, the Board of Management and John Caulfield. Everyone is getting behind us and supporting us and everyone is excited about it.”

The Lord Mayor of Cork Tony Fitzgerald has welcomed this new project and believes it will create a better atmosphere amongst the communities in the City and County.

“It’s not just about the success on the pitch, it’s about engaging with the communities and engaging in various programmes and I think this particular launch of more than a club is very fitting for Cork City FC because it is more than a club,” added Fitzgerald.

“It’s about community participation, it’s about engaging with spectators and communities and creating an atmosphere in our city and county that gives excitement to people.

“The plan for the New Year is going very well and I think this programme fits in very well with the life experience of young people that’s needed in our city and county.

“I commend the board of management and the chairman Pat Lyons. There is a great community spirit at the club.

"I commend the FAI, Donal [Conway] and my namesake Tony Fitzgerald [President of the FAI] and I commend Cork City for the launch of this programme and wish them every success.”

FAI pays tribute to Daryl Murphy upon retirement

DarylMurphy2018.jpg

The 34-year-old, who made his senior debut in 2007, has decided to step away from the international scene following 33 appearances that included memorable goals against Serbia and Moldova in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

Murphy featured in two games at EURO 2016 - the famous 1-0 win over Italy and the Last-16 battle with France - and was known for his power in the air, his teamwork and hard running, and his commitment to representing his country.

FAI CEO John Delaney feels that Murphy, who is still playing club football with Nottingham Forest in England, deserves any plaudits that come his way for his performances in an Ireland jersey.

"Daryl can be extremely proud of his international career with Ireland. From a young lad with Southend United in his native Waterford through to playing at EURO 2016, he went a long way and proved that he could compete on the biggest stage," said Delaney.

"It is a huge privilege to represent your country and Daryl always appreciated that. You could see how much it meant to him to play for Ireland - even when he had a six-year gap between caps; he never lost that desire to do his very best.

"It should not be forgotten that he also excelled in the League of Ireland with Waterford United before earning a move to Sunderland. That period helped to shape his senior career and I know that he is very proud of his roots.

"We would like to pay tribute to Daryl at the Aviva Stadium for his contribution to Irish football, at a time that is appropriate for him. Daryl and his family are welcome back to the Aviva Stadium at any time."

Ireland manager Martin O'Neill, who brought Murphy back into the international fold after a number of years on the outside, believes that the hard-working striker gave everything during his time with Ireland.

"Daryl did really well in the couple of years that I worked with him in the international set-up and he was always very professional," said O'Neill.

"He got to play in two very big matches at EURO 2016 and I'm sure the Italian game in Lille will be a big memory for him when he looks back on his days with Ireland.

"I wish him all of the best not just at club level but whatever he chooses to do after that."

Murphy played at underage level for Ireland before earning his first senior cap against Ecuador on a summer trip to the United States in 2007 and his final appearance was in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Play-Off defeat to Denmark in November 2017.

He has enjoyed a long club career with spells at Waterford United, Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich Town, Celtic, Newcastle United, and, now, Nottingham Forest.

The Women's National Team has enjoyed unprecedented success since Colin Bell's appointment in February 2017 with Ireland currently second in their FIFA 2019 World Cup qualification group.

Wins over Northern Ireland and Slovakia were followed up with an impressive 0-0 draw at the home of the European Champions, the Netherlands, with home games against Slovakia and the Netherlands in April at Tallaght Stadium.

Since Colin Bell took charge of the WNT last year, Ireland have only lost three out of the 12 games and have recorded impressive friendly victories over Portugal, Wales, Iceland and Czech Republic.

Republic of Ireland Women's National Team Head Coach Colin Bell said: "I'm absolutely delighted to extend my contract with the Football Association of Ireland as the Head Coach of the Republic of Ireland Women's National Team.

"It is a source of immense pride for me and my family to be the Head Coach of the national team, and I'm incredibly proud of the progress the team has made over the last 11 months.

"The players are fantastic to work with as they continually put in maximum effort to ensure their own personal progression and the progress of the national team. We've achieved some fantastic results so far, none more so than the draw against the European Champions, the Netherlands, in November.

"That result proves that this team can achieve at the highest level of international football and hopefully our progress over the next few years will lead to our first-ever appearance at a major tournament.

"Furthermore, in my role as Head Coach of the Women's Under-17s side, I've been incredibly impressed and excited by the amount of talent in Ireland. We've recently seen the likes of Tyler Toland, Amy Boyle-Carr, Zara Foley and Eabha O'Mahony receive call-ups to the senior squad and that shows my commitment to progressing the talent we have in this country.

"I'm extremely excited about the future for the Women's National Team and I'd like to thank all of the players, staff and the FAI for their support during my time in Ireland so far."

Republic of Ireland Women's Under-17 Head Coach Colin Bell has named a 20-player squad ahead of two friendly matches against Denmark.

The WU17s will welcome their opponents to the FAI National Training Centre for two games that will help the squad prepare for their UEFA European Championship Elite Round matches in March against Germany, Azerbaijan and Iceland.

The first game against Denmark takes place on Monday, February 5, and the second friendly match will happen on Thursday, February 8, with the players set to report for the camp on the Friday beforehand.

Galway WFC midfielder Lucia Lobato is called in alongside Tyler Toland, Isibeal Atkinson, Amy Boyle Carr, Zara Foley and Eabha O'Mahony, who were all part of the women's senior squad for two recent games against Portugal.

"It is going to be an important week for the squad as we prepare for our Elite Round fixtures," said Bell.

"We came through the qualification phase with wins over Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece and Romania, having not conceded a goal. It shows the quality we have in this young squad and I'm hoping to see even more improvement from the squad in these two friendly matches.

"Five players in the squad were also part of the senior squad for the friendly matches against Portugal and I'm hoping they can use their experience from spending time with the senior team to enhance the standard in training throughout the week.

"Denmark will provide quality opposition ahead of the Elite Round in March where we will need to be at our very best to progress past Germany, Iceland and Azerbaijan."

The two teams play each other twice this week, as both continue their preparations ahead of the Elite Round stage of the UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship.

In a game of few chances, Denmark's two goals came from free-kicks. Midway through the first half, Danish midfielder Emma Snerle's shot hit the crossbar, before Laura Juul tapped in the opener. Less than 15-minutes later, Snerle found the back of the net with another free kick from the edge of the box.

Speaking after the game, manager Colin Bell said there were areas to improve on ahead of Thursday's game.

"We dominated the game in the second half, without having clear cut chances. We kept Denmark out, but we had much more of the ball. We looked sharper too, and will learn the lessons we have to ahead of the second match."

The sides return to the FAINTC on Thursday, for the second of two international friendlies this week.

Republic of Ireland: Rachel Kelly; Zara Foley, Aoife Slattery, Doireann Fahey, Eabha O'Mahony (Louise Masterson 70); Isibeal Atkinson, Tyler Toland, Amy Boyle Carr (Roisin McGovern 70), Alannah McEvoy; Megan Mackey (capt) (Lucia Lobato 83), Andrea Trill (Emily Whelan 46).

Schools squad announced for Centenary Shield

The comprehensive training schedule saw approximately 40 players observed over an eight-day assessment period. O’Connor keyed up a number of competitive friendly games in the build up to the season with St. Patrick’s Athletic, Galway United, Dundalk FC, Bohemian FC, Jim Crawford’s Under-18 home-based select and Colin O’Brien’s Under-17s all tested.

The initial trialing process was kicked off last November when FAI Schools hosted the annual Interprovincial Tournament which saw 64 top class scholars compete in a three-day competition. Leinster secured the title on that occasion and it’s no surprise that a number of their key players will feature this season for O’Connor’s side.

Meath man Cian Lee who studies at Boyne Community School in Trim has made the cut alongside Dublin quintet of Riversdale Community College scholar Peter Adigun, Jack Ryan of Templeogue College, Lido Lotefa of Balbriggan Community College, Ali Regbha of Chanel College, Coolock and Jake Walker of St. Kevin’s Community College, Clondalkin.

Three of the 18 players selected have already been capped for the Republic of Ireland Schools in the Centenary Shield in 2017 with James Carroll (St. Oliver’s Community School, Drogheda), Ronan Manning (Yeats College and formerly of Calasanctius College, Oranmore) and Darryl Walsh (St. Declan’s College, Waterford) featuring extensively for former Head Coach Paddy O’Reilly.

Goalkeeper Daniel Houghton and Kieran Farren who both attend Carndonagh Community School will be called into action this time out. The Donegal duo will be joined by Ulster talisman Adam O'Connor who currently applies his academic trade in St. Clare’s College, Ballyjamesduff.

Sligo native Liam Kerrigan who is a pupil at St. Attracta’s Community School, Tubbercurry will relish his International call up accompanied by Connacht netminder Luke McNicholas of Balla Secondary School and Adam Rooney of Yeats College, Galway.

St. Francis College, Rochestown starlet Rory Doyle has been given the green light for this showdown with Waterford’s Adam Conway who represents De La Salle College in the City as does Cahir prodigy Cian Murphy of Coláiste Dun Íascaigh, all making the mix for the Southerners.

MANAGEMENT STAFF

Balbriggan Community College mentor William O’Connor will be assisted this season by Dublin Oak Academy, Bray tutor John McShane as Coach, Athlone Community College teacher Conor Foley as Goalkeeping Coach and veteran Ollie Horgan who teaches in St. Eunan’s College, Letterkenny will act as Performance Analyst.

The 2018 series will see the Republic of Ireland with two consecutive away fixtures as the Boys In Green commence battle.

The team will travel to ‘the Rock’ in Cefn Druids to take on the Welsh Dragons in a fortnight’s time. Wales will be looking to avenge last year’s performance which saw them plunge at the death.  Late drama at Whitehall saw the Republic of Ireland snatch an injury time winner from the penalty spot courtesy of Clonkeen College student Seán McDonald to claim an auspicious opening victory, 2-1.

A month later the Irish students will visit Luton Town to take on their hosts England in what should prove to be one of their toughest tests in the four match programme. In a game to forget, the Irish lost 5-2 at home to the three lions last season.

England are always title contenders and they shared the spoils with Northern Ireland in the previous campaign so our title ambitions may be resting on this game. O’Connor’s crew will be hoping to celebrate the St. Patrick’s weekend with all three points in the bag.

Northern Ireland will be the Republic’s penultimate fixture at the end of March. It’s always a humdinger with little between the two sides. The Republic of Ireland select came from a goal down at half time to finish with a late flourish thanks to an 80th minute equaliser from Carrigaline star Alec Byrne followed up four minutes later by St. Andrew’s scholar Neil Farrugia to bag the match winner last season.

The North obviously overcame this narrow defeat to claim the Shield in 2017 with England. Another massive game for Frankie Wilson and Co. who will be hoping to retain the title outright in 2018.

The Republic of Ireland will wrap up proceedings in Home Farm FC in April when Scotland come to visit. The Irish dropped vital points against the tartan army last year with a solidarity goal coming ten minutes in courtesy of their Captain Kyle Banner.

In his first term at the helm, O’Connor will want to stamp his authority early on. The first two games away from home aren’t ideal but if he gets a win and a draw, it leaves it all to play for in the final two home ties. No doubt four massive performances are required to keep his title ambitions alive.

UCC on course to retain Collingwood Cup

The three day tournament, sponsored by the leading Irish fast food brand Rustlers got under way in Belfast yesterday with the Cork side putting down a marker that they won’t be relinquishing their hold on the trophy very easily. UCC’s magnificent seven came with hat tricks from Matthew McKevitt and half time substitute Cormac Cotter plus Amateur International Shane Daly-Butz also getting on the score sheet to complete the total.

Mary Immaculate did well to keep out the some early UCC pressure and were unlucky themselves not to go a goal in front when Darren Casey had a shot taken off the line by defender Sean O’Mahony. But that was as good as it got for the Limerick side as UCC went on to give an impressive performance.

UCD, the runners-up last year and one of the favourites to regain a trophy they have claimed on 45 other occasions showed real determination to get past Maynooth University comfortably coming out on top 3-0. Georgie Kelly gave them a half time lead with a brilliant finish after chesting down a Jason McClelland cross to beat Maynooth ‘keeper Michael Kelly from close in. Kelly added a second early in the second half side footing home another fine McClelland delivery.

Maynooth had a Jason Grouse effort saved by Gavin Sheridan in the UCD goal and Darragh Markey then put another effort over the cross bar before Daire O’Connor sealed the win on the hour with a cool finish from Kelly’s square pass.

Two goals each from Jack O’Connor and Alan O’Sullivan with Rory Feely adding a fifth saw DCU through to the last four with an impressive 5-1 win over Ulster University. Adam Brown headed a second half consolation for the northern side who were completely outclassed by a much stronger DCU outfit.

Hosts Queens University survived a late rally from Trinity College Dublin to go through to the semi finals after looking comfortable leading 3-0 with ten minutes remaining. Two first half goals Eamon Fyfe had Queens well in command by the break and when the striker completed his had trick it looked all over for Trinity. But back they came and James Woods cracked home two quick goals to give them hope only for Daire Rooney to further stretch the home side’s advantage. Muhanned Bukhatwa did manage a third in the closing minutes for Trinity following up after goalkeeper Conor Lally had kept out his penalty kick.

The semi final line up today will see UCC take on Queens while DCU face UCD with both games kicking off at 2.30pm.

The final selection stems from months of assessment days and monitoring of players since the conclusion of the annual Interprovincial Tournament last November. The three-day event saw 68 of the best player’s line out for their Province. This was the first step in a comprehensive review period for the management team which saw in effect of over 40 players screened.

As well as the on the pitch activity, Berkeley has concentrated his efforts on performance analysis, team building, communications and team dynamic. The Republic of Ireland’s extended panel featured in a friendly last weekend against the Under-17 Western Region Development squad and performed exceptionally well. A hat-trick of goals were created in this lively affair which will definitely instill a new found confidence when they take on their opposition in a fortnight’s time.

Berkeley, who teaches in Sancta Maria College, Louisburgh has a wealth of talent at his disposal this season with four players returning to the fore in 2018.  The experienced St. Paul’s Secondary School scholar Anna Fahey of Oughterard will be an immeasurable addition to this squad and has the striking boots on all season for the Schools select. She has footballing credentials as she follows in her aunt Niamh’s footsteps.

Fahey will be joined by Connacht colleague Muireann Devaney who hails from Manorhamilton. The youngster attends St. Clare’s Comprehensive School in the town and will be another hot-shot going forward. The classy and modest Aoibheann Clancy helped her School, Presentation Secondary School, Thurles into this year’s Bank of Ireland FAI Schools Senior Girls National Cup Final and her ability on the ball is immense.

The quartet of returnees will also include Kate O'Dowd. The St. Nathy’s College student was given the honour of leading her team out last week in Castlebar and the Ballaghaderreen native relished the occasion with a starring role. The quartet will play a pivotal role in the success of this venture having shown enormous resolve and composure last season for such youngster. The experienced gained over the past twelve months should stand them in good stead.

Although Carndonagh Community College pupil Erin McLaughlin narrowly missed out on selection last year, her hard work has finally been rewarded with a place in the squad in 2018. The Ulster gem has been exceptional for her School this season with appearances in the Junior & Senior Ulster Cup campaign in recent times. However Moville Community College starlet Kerry Brown has had the bragging rights with some of those local derbies. The Donegal duo are certain to impress with their recent run of form which was phenomenal last Saturday in Castlebar.

Indeed Brown who makes the cut, is a cousin of former Schools’ International Roma McLaughlin so she should have a certain degree of pedigree in her armour. Interestingly, Kerry will come face to face with Aoibheann Clancy when the two schools meet in this year’s Senior Cup decider in Home Farm later this month!

Galway native’s Theresa Kinnevey also of St. Paul’s SS, Oughterard will be joined by Claregalway College (Coláiste Bhaile Chláir) gruesome twosome Kate Slevin and Shauna Brennan. The Galway girls are named alongside Kiltimagh’s Emer O’Neill who is flying the flag for St. Louis Community School, Mayo. These four dynamos were instrumental in Connacht securing the Interprovincial title last November following a 25 year hiatus.

Goalkeeper Rugile Askaintye has had limited playing time since picking up a knock at Christmas but the St. Mary’s Holy Faith, Glasnevin powerhouse will be returning from injury to get some much needed game time under her belt before the International clash in Belfast. Kilkenny’s Ellen Molloy will be one to note for future. The Presentation Secondary School teenager is savouring her International experience at the moment as is Donnybrook’s Abbie Clarke who hails from Muckross Park College. Her Leinster sidekicks Jessica Stapleton (Palmerstown Community School) and Della Doherty (Coláiste Íosagain, Portarlington) were cleaning up on the POTM accolades at the Interpro series last year. The pair will be hoping to continue this formidable partnership in the Bob Docherty Cup campaign.

Munster’s mighty trio will see Leah Hayes Coen in the mix. The netminder is at school in Scoil Mhuire agus Íde, Newcastle West while Aoife Horgan resides in Ballybunion and attends St. Joseph’s Secondary School. Emma O’Donoghue of Coláiste Muire, Ennis will be delighted with her efforts this season. All three had an exceptional display for their Province in the AUL over the three day contest and they’ll delight in the opportunity of another big performance in the same venue when they host a Northern Ireland select.  In fact Horgan picked up a POTM accolade herself in the final day of Interpro proceedings.

MANAGEMENT STAFF

With the departure of long-serving Head Coach Lorraine Counihan (Coláiste Mhuire, Buttevant) and associate Maureen O’Donnell (Deele College, Raphoe), Berkeley has drafted in the services of the experienced trouper Karen Deans of St. Ultan’s Navan and Mulroy College stalwart Karen Henry. Dave Rooney will maintain his position as Goalkeeping Coach while Football Facilitator in IT Sligo Emma Mullin will assume the role of Performance Analyst.

The Republic of Ireland will welcome Alfie Wylie’s side to the AUL Complex, Clonshaugh on Saturday, February 17. The two teams met twelve months previous with the Republic coming through that test with slight ease.

Although Erin McLaughlin didn’t make the cut last season, the young Carndonagh Community School scholar was in the extended squad that afternoon. The Donegal livewire didn’t let the big stage faze her as she netted a superb goal on her debut. Also on the score-sheet that afternoon was Oughterard’s Anna Fahey who secured a brace as well as Thurles tornado Aoibheann Clancy assisting Jessica Ziu to slot home. An obviously bigger test will await the Schools select in a fortnight’s time and one that Berkeley will hope will be more beneficial as he studies the capabilities of his players.

Following this, the Under-15 Girls will be invited to take on Sharon Boyle’s Under-16 contingency in a closed session in early March before departing a week later for Stafford as they take on England in the annual John Read Cup. Lorraine Counihan’s charges defeated the English in a surprise tale in 2017 to claim the title for the first time in the competition’s short history. In fact, Aoibheann Clancy picked up the Player Of The Match award that afternoon following a dazzling performance. Can the travelling Irish retain the title or will England avenge last year’s surprise defeat. All to play for on March 10.

With the final preparations then complete, the focus will shift to the International stage as Berkeley’s squad make the short trip to Belfast. The Welsh Dragons won the event in 2017 and were in remarkable form which has carried through to this season so they’re still the hot favourities. The strength and depth of that panel can’t be underestimated as the draw for the tournament has yet to be finalized. Berkeley will be hoping to avoid them in the group stages.   The three day tournament will commence on Saturday, March 24.

Queen's and UCD to meet in Collingwood Cup Final

24-time champions Queen’s (pictured above) progressed to their first Collingwood Cup final since 1995 with a dramatic 4-3 victory over defending champions UCC in Belfast today. It was the hosts who raced into a 2-0 lead after only three minutes, firstly Eamon Fyfe poked home from inside the box after UCC failed to clear a corner and this was quickly followed by a second as Matt Hughes headed passed Cathal O’Hanlon in the UCC goal.

UCC didn’t let their heads drop and responded almost immediately as Matthew McKevitt cut in from the left-hand side to score. The holders got back on level terms after 20 minutes through Garan Manley but the goals continued to flow and Fyfe put Queen’s back in the lead with his fifth goal of the tournament. Queen’s stretched their lead again before half-time when Daire Rooney scored his sides fourth goal, this time Fyfe turned provider with a fine cross from the right wing and Queen’s brought a two-goal advantage into the interval.

UCC pushed hard in the second half to get back into the game and they got their reward with 18 minutes remaining when David Dalton made it 4-3 but despite some let pressure Queen’s defence held firm to secure their second 4-3 victory in two days after they overcame Trinity College by the same score on Monday.

46-time champions UCD made it to the final with a controlled display against city rivals DCU. Second half goals from Liam Scales and Georgie Kelly were enough to see off Declan Roche’s Glasnevin side.

In a tight first-half amidst a blizzard of snow, both sides cut each other out with resolute defending. There was a feisty midfield battle as DCU duo Jamie Lennon and Eric Whelan refused to give the UCD pair of Gary O’Neill and Timmy Molloy an inch in the middle of the park.

In the second half with the snow still flowing, the game began to open up as both sides looked to gain the advantage. Ross Taheny was guilty of missing an outstanding chance in front of goal as Gavin Kearney’s powerfully hit free kick was parried by Conor Kearns to the feet of Taheny but the Sligo man could not keep his effort below the cross bar.

Just after the hour mark, UCD made the breakthrough. A corner from O’Neill was flicked across goal by Kelly and Scales headed home with DCU strongly questioning a push in the build-up.

A few moments later it was two as Daire O’Connor burst down the right flank to square it to Molloy and the Galway man guided the ball into the path of Kelly at the back post who made no mistake from 6 yards out.

DCU tried desperately to find a lifeline back into the game but Kouogun and Collins were powerful at the back. With the game ticking away from DCU, a late challenge from Lennon on O’Neill caused an altercation between both sides and the referee took offence to verbals coming from UCD’s Josh Collins and dismissed the Belfield man, who now misses the final. However it would not stop UCD seeing out the whistle and making it to the final once more.

The final will take place at 2:30pm on Wednesday afternoon and will be live streamed through the FAI's Facebook page.

Introduction:
The very first Rustlers IUFU Collingwood Cup Final in 1914 was contested between Queen’s University Belfast and University College Dublin in Dalymount Park. 104 years later, the two sides will take the field again for Ireland’s oldest active football tournament in the Queen’s University Upper Malone Sports facility.

Last year’s final was decided by UCC’s Daniel Pender’s 94th minute match winner and Mark Boland struck for UCD in the 89th minute in 2016.

Timmy Molloy had given the Dublin side the lead midway through the first half before Ronan Young equalised on the stroke of half-time with an excellent free kick. Drama ensued before the interval when striker Georgie Kelly was sent off for a late challenge. Both sides went at it in the second half and there were chances to win it before O’Connor settled it with extra time looming.

Both sides made a couple of changes from the semi-finals with Callum Smith and Conor Kerr put in from the start for Queen’s, and Dungannon Swifts Jarlath O’Rourke brought into the side as a substitute. UCD made three changes. Darragh McConville was a forced change in place of the suspended Josh Collins and Greg Sloggett and Gavin Sheridan were put in ahead of Yoyo Mahdy and Conor Kearns.

UCD started the brighter of the two and good interchange of play between Sloggett and O’Connor teed up Molloy to open the scoring just inside the Queen’s box. It could have been two when O’Connor again teed up Jason McClelland but the 2017 World University Games player dragged his shot outside of the post.

Queen’s were brought back into the game when Ronan Young stepped up from twenty-five yards and curled his free kick beyond the outstretched Gavin Sheridan and into the top-corner.

The half ended in controversy when Georgie Kelly was dismissed for a lunge on Eamon Fyfe. Initially referee Ryan Hanna had issued the Donegal forward with a yellow card but following consultation with his linesman who was yards away, he then produced a red card for Kelly.

UCD were dealt another blow during the half-time break as captain Gary O’Neill was forced to end his involvement in the final after being on the receiving end of a hefty challenge from Callum Byers in the first half.

The Dublin side had the better chances in the second half with O’Connor and Liam Scales having the best of the opportunities. O’Rourke was brought off the bench and he nearly won it when he found space in front of goal and Sheridan pulled off a good save and released the ball up top where O’Connor broke away and forced an even better save from Conor Lally.

Deep into stoppage time, O’Connor picked the ball up outside the box 20 yards out on the left flank. He drove inside and curled the ball into the far corner to send the UCD bench into pandemonium and delivered their 47th Collingwood Cup success.

FAI pays tribute to Wes Hoolahan

Wes Hoolahan celebrate.jpg

The Football Association of Ireland has paid tribute to Republic of Ireland midfielder Wes Hoolahan following his retirement from international football.

The Dubliner etched his name into Irish footballing history with his exquisite finish against Sweden in Ireland's opening game of EURO 2016, while he also provided memorable assists for Robbie Brady's goal against Italy in Lille and James McClean's strike against Austria in Vienna.

After making his senior debut in 2008, Hoolahan had to wait another four years before earning his second cap but went on to become the third most used player under Martin O'Neill with 35 of his appearances coming within the current manager's era.

"Wes phoned me last week to let me know about retiring from international football. I remember, with great fondness, his outstanding performance and wonderful goal, against Sweden in Paris during the EUROs," said O'Neill.

"His desire to play for his country was immeasurable and he was a delight to work with over the past four years.

"Naturally, I wish Wes the very best of luck with his career at club level."

FAI CEO John Delaney praised the impact that Hoolahan had during his time with Ireland and described him as a 'role model' for young players rising up through the various tiers of the SSE Airtricity League.

"There is no doubt in my mind that Wes Hoolahan will be remembered as one of the most technically gifted players ever to pull on the Ireland jersey," said Delaney.

"I think a lot of credit should go to both Belvedere and Shelbourne, who helped to develop a talented kid into a skilled professional who would go on to score that superb goal against Sweden in the Stade de France at EURO 2016.

"Wes made his name in the League of Ireland with a fantastic Shelbourne side and he was always proud of that. I think he is the perfect role model for young players aspiring to reach the top because he worked hard for everything that he got and embraced his time representing his country.

"We would like to pay tribute to Wes at the Aviva Stadium for his contribution to Irish football, at a time that suits him. Wes and his family are welcome to the Aviva Stadium at any time."

A former Under 21 and B international, Hoolahan started 24 of his 43 senior appearances with his first cap coming as a Blackpool player while the rest were with Norwich City, who he still plays club football for.

Ireland WU17: Ziu goal not enough against Denmark

The second of two games to take place between the sides this week at the FAI National Training Centre saw Denmark open the scoring through Josefine Hasbo after 14 minutes.

Ireland were unlucky not to go into the break level, after Emily Whelan's shot was excellently saved by goalkeeper Line Andersen five minutes before half-time.

Denmark doubled their lead ten minutes into the second half, with a goal from Pernille Pedersen. After the away side doubled their lead, Ireland pushed for goals and thought they equalised with 15 minutes left, but Allanah McEvoy's goal was disallowed.

Ziu scored from the edge of the box with seven minutes to go, but the team were not able to find the crucial equaliser.

Speaking after the match, manager Colin Bell (pictured above) said he was happy with the test his side was given over both games this week.

"We were up against a good opponent this week, so it was beneficial for the team to learn."

"Jess [Ziu] scored a nice goal. We definitely deserved the goal, but it was disappointing to have one disallowed."

Republic of Ireland: Rachel Kelly (Courtney Maguire 41); Roisin McGovern (Leah Brady 70), Megan Mackey (capt), Doireann Fahey (Harriet Lambe 74); Tyler Toland, Amy Boyle Carr; Zara Foley, Lucia Lobato (Jessica Ziu 41), Isibeal Atkinson (Rachel O'Regan 60); Emily Whelan, Allanah McEvoy.

Tom Mohan NB.jpg

Tom Mohan has selected a squad of 20 players for two games against Romania in Spain.

The two games will give Mohan the opportunity to fine-tune his preparations for next month’s UEFA European Under-19 Championship Elite Round. In the final stage of qualification, Ireland will take on Kosovo, Portugal and Slovakia for a place in the tournament proper.

Head Coach Mohan was looking forward to the Romanian challenge. “It’s our last opportunity before the Elite Round to get a look at players,” said Mohan.

“Obviously we are missing a number of players so that opens the door for other lads to come in and stake their claim for a place. Some of the guys have taken the opportunity they’ve been given in pre-season domestically and have done really well.”

Coming off the back of a top place finish in the Qualifying Round, Mohan is keen to use the upcoming matches to keep that momentum going.  “Any time you get a squad in you have to make the most of it. Romania topped their group in qualifying, they’ll be tough opponents and that is what you want.

“We want our players tested at the highest level before the Elite Round because it is a very competitive stage and that is exactly what these two games will give us,” he said.

Ireland’s opening game in Spain takes place on Tuesday.

FAI pays its respects to Liam Miller

Hailing from County Cork, the 36-year-old passed away following illness and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

The former midfielder enjoyed a distinguished career that saw him line out for 12 professional clubs in seven different countries, including Celtic, Manchester United, Leeds United, Sunderland, Hibernian, Perth Glory and Cork City.

A star player at underage level for Ireland, he was part of the Ireland Under 16 squad that won the UEFA European Championships in 1998.

Miller went on to earn 21 senior caps after making his debut on March 31, 2004 against Czech Republic. He scored his only senior goal in a 3-0 victory over Sweden on March 1, 2006.

Ireland manager Martin O'Neill, who gave Liam his senior debut for Celtic, praised the midfielder as he recalled his fond memories of him.

"I remember the impact that Liam had in a big Champions League match against Lyon. We were pressing strongly and trying to find the breakthrough when Liam scored a magical goal that gave us momentum to win the game," said O'Neill.

"At the end of that season, Liam moved on to Manchester United but had already made a strong mark at Celtic Park and the players were extremely disappointed to see him go.

"Liam's passing is very sad and he will be greatly missed. He was an excellent footballer and a fantastic man."

FAI CEO John Delaney paid tribute to Miller by saying: "It is very upsetting to learn of the passing of Liam Miller at such a young age. I only visited with Liam in Cork very recently and he was still fighting bravely against his illness.

"A gifted midfielder, Liam helped the Ireland Under 16s win the UEFA European Championships in Scotland and went on to forge a fine senior career that saw him pull on the green jersey for Ireland at senior level - and we will all remember his superb goal against Sweden.

"While Liam achieved a lot as a player, he still had a lot more to give and that is the most tragic aspect of his passing. We send our deepest condolences to Liam's family at this difficult time."

The FAI will remember Liam with a tribute in the coming months.

The WNT Head Coach, who recently signed an extension to his contract until 2021, presented a theory and practical session on the training pitch at the FAI National Training Centre to coaches from the Continental Tyres Women's National League and underage set-up.

FAI High Performance Director Ruud Dokter, FAI Head of Women's Football Sue Ronan and FAI Head of Fitness Dan Horan also presented on a range of topics, including the recent success at the UEFA European Championships, periodisation and coaching techniques.

The Conference was designed to bring together coaches from across the country in women's football to share ideas, help improve the standard of coaching in the country and inform about the progress of the game in Ireland.

The Women's National Team have enjoyed a fantastic 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign so far with wins over Northern Ireland and Slovakia, and an impressive draw against current European champions Netherlands.

The 2018 Continental Tyres Women's National League season is set to start in March with newcomers Limerick set to make the competition an eight-team league.

"The Conference was a great opportunity for all coaches in women's football to come together and learn from each other,” said Bell.

"As I know having worked in club football in Germany, the club coaches are the most important people in regards to the development of our footballers. If we can work together to increase the standard of coaching in the Women's National League and at grassroots level, I'm sure it will have a positive impact for the future of the women's game in Ireland."

Ronan said: "There has been so much progress made in the women's game over recent years but it's important we continue to strive for more progress.

"We've got great coaches in this country and I think to bring all of them together ahead of the new Women's National League season is a real positive. The coaches are the foundation of the game and we need to make sure we're supporting and helping our coaches as much as possible."
