Ireland lost 2-1 to Iceland on Thursday, and face an Azerbaijan side who suffered a 5-0 defeat to Germany in their opening match. Both teams will be looking to win to keep their hopes of reaching the UEFA Women's Under-17 Championship in Lithuania alive.

Bell said the team have used the past two days to work on the errors made in the defeat to Iceland.

"We picked up on the things we need to improve on. Conceding two goals in any game gives the side too much to do".

After losing 5-0 in their opening game, Bell expects a tough game against a battling Azerbaijan.

"The game they played against Germany was played in very difficult conditions. The pitch had a lot of snow on it, and the Germans coped well with the surface.

"Azerbaijan will try and upset us with a very physical game. We'll just have to be up for that, and find solutions to get around it."

Bell has reported no fitness concerns and expects to be able to pick from a full squad ahead of Sunday morning's match.

Two goals inside the first 15-minutes from Michael Obafemi and Lee O'Connor gave Tom Mohan's side the perfect start, before Rowan Roache scored the third early in the second-half.

Mohan made five changes to the team that drew with Slovakia and the changes had an immediate impact with Obafemi scoring smartly inside the first five minutes.

O'Connor scored in the 13th-minute, lifting the ball over Kosovo goalkeeper Flamur Gashi to give Ireland a two-goal lead.

Roache put the game out of sight, nine minutes into the second-half, after he scored from close range from an Obafemi cross.

The team return to action on Tuesday evening against Portugal knowing a win could be enough to send them through to the 2018 UEFA Under-19 European Championship later this year.

After a 2-1 loss to Iceland in their first match, Colin Bell's side knew a win was needed if the side was to have any chance of qualifying for May's tournament in Lithuania.

Amy Boyle Carr's (pictured above) strike in the early stages of the second half was the only goal of the game, that ensured Ireland a valuable three points.

Speaking after the match, Head Coach Colin Bell said his side were full value for the win.

"It was important to win the match after the Iceland defeat. The girls were a little nervous in the first-half. We tried to settle them down at half-time and looked far better in the second-half.

"Amy found herself in a good space and shot past the Azerbaijani goalkeeper into the bottom corner. After that we had chances to score a second. Azerbaijan only had one chance near the end of the game. The win was well deserved."

The team play their final match on Wednesday morning against reigning champions Germany. That game kicks off a 11am Irish time.

Two first-half goals in the space of three minutes from Conor Tee and Cieran Dunne gave Jim Crawford's side a 2-0 lead. Romania pulled one back on the hour mark through defender Leca Maruis, but Ireland held out for an impressive win.

Speaking after the win, Head Coach Jim Crawford said he was delighted with the team's performance.

"The boys worked really hard in the past few days, and did what we asked of them in the first half. When we went 2-0 up, I though we took our foot off the pedal and let Romania back into the game. There's plenty to work on ahead of the second game, but it was a very pleasing performance.

"Romania will coming into the second game knowing what we're about. They will up their level, and we'll have to match that."

The two teams meet again at the same venue on Tuesday morning. Kick-off is at 11.30am.

With the 2018 season already underway, the highlights of the games can be viewed on FAI TV's YouTube channel and each club is free to use the footage to promote its own players and games.

The eight WNL clubs can also avail of a state-of-the-art performance analysis system, run by Avenir Sports, where all head coaches and analysts can view full matches, download specific clips, and trawl through the various selections of set-pieces and key moments.

The highlights package and access to the performance analysis system is free of charge to all eight clubs, courtesy of funding supplied by the Football Association of Ireland and UEFA.

Sue Ronan, FAI Head of Women's Football, believes this initiative is a huge step in the right direction in further promoting the women's game.

"Since its inception in 2010, the Women's National League has gone from strength to strength and we now have a very competitive League, which was evident last season with Wexford Youths only confirmed champions on the last match-day," said Ronan.

"This season, to further promote and grow our League, we have started to produce a weekly highlights package featuring goals and key moments from every game.

"This will not only showcase the quality of skill on display at each of our clubs, it will also create role models for the young girls at grassroots clubs all around the country, who we hope will then aim to become the next generation of elite players."

Saturday's 3-0 win over Georgia, booked Ireland's spot in England this May. Despite qualifying, O'Brien says the team have "prepared properly" ahead of their final match.

"This will be a highly competitive game. Poland need something out of it to qualify for the European Championships. A point may be good enough for them.

"They have played already in Legnica twice in the past week and know the setup. They will have a strong home support too, but we'll be prepared for it."

O'Brien's side have won all five games in the Qualifying and Elite Rounds on the way to qualification. He says the team have improved over the season.

"There's competition within the squad. I'm not the type of coach that looks at goals for or goals against over a campaign. It's more about looking at the performance of the players and making sure they are working in a good environment.

A win over Portugal in the final Elite Round game on Tuesday evening will be enough to qualify for the Finals for the first time since 2011.

"Realistically, we were looking at going into the last game, with qualification in our own hands. Portugal are a quality side, and we knew we would have to beat them to have a chance. It's great to be in this position.

"The boys handled the pressure excellently against Kosovo on Saturday. We scored three excellent goals which is great for confidence.

Portugal won the European Championships at Under-17 level two years ago, and Mohan knows his side are in for a tough test.

"They are a very expansive and high-quality side. We'll be prepared for their challenge and look forward to matching up with them."

"We'll do everything in our power to cap off a fabulous few days for Irish football. Our Under-17 men's team qualified, the Under-17 women's team won their first game of the Elite Round.

"The Under-21 and the Under-18 sides won in recent days too. Declan Rice was man-of-the-match for the Senior team. It's positives all round in the bigger picture of things in international youth football."

Jonathan Afolabi missed the Kosovo win through suspension, but is available for selection for the final game where Mohan expects to have a full squad to choose from.

Rice_U21.jpg

Republic of Ireland Under 21s Head Coach Noel King is delighted to have Declan Rice available for when his side face Azerbaijan at Tallaght Stadium on Tuesday evening (KO 19.30).

Rice has returned to the U21 squad following his Man of the Match performance for the senior team against Turkey last Friday, along with goalkeeper Kieran O'Hara.

Striker Reece Grego-Cox, who scored a hat-trick against Israel last October, and winger Jake Mulraney, who scored against Norway in November, have also joined up with the squad following club commitments.

King said: "It’s a game we’re all looking forward to. We had a fantastic win over Iceland last week and that has really built the confidence ahead of this game.

“We’ve had a great campaign so far and we need to keep it up. The squad is looking good. It’s great to have Declan Rice back for the game as he has already proven during the campaign what a crucial member of the squad he is.

“We’ve also had the likes of Reece (Grego-Cox) and Jake (Mulraney) join the squad later in the week so we’re really confident going into the match."

The U21s will be looking to continue their impressive qualifying performance so far when they take on Azerbaijan at Tallaght Stadium in a crucial UEFA U21 European Championship qualifier.

Ireland go into the game third in the Group 5, level on points with second-placed Kosovo but with two games in hand. A win at Tallaght Stadium will put them within two points of leaders Germany, ahead of games against Kosovo and Germany in September.

King continued: "If I was a football person in Dublin tomorrow night, it is only a fiver and it is free for children, I’d be coming straight up.

"A chance to go and watch the next generation, the likes of Josh Cullen, Kieran O’Hara and Declan Rice, in a crucial qualifying match, I’d be straight up to Tallaght Stadium tomorrow.

"The team have had a great campaign so far and deserve the support. We’re right in the mix for qualification and need to make sure we get a crucial three points."

Tickets for the Azerbaijan game are priced at just €5 for adults. It is FREE for U16s, OAPs and FAI and Shamrock Rovers Season Ticket Holders and tickets are available via Ticketmaster and on the gate at Tallaght Stadium.

TEAM NEWS: Midfielder Jake Doyle Hayes has left the squad due to injury and goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has returned to his club following Kieran O'Hara's return from the senior squad.

England were showing more of the drive and commitment in the first half which saw them deservedly take the lead just before the interval with Lydia Hudson finishing off neatly after Alyssa Aherne’s initial effort was blocked by Therese Kinnevey.

Ireland Head Coach Richard Berkeley introduced Erin McLaughlin of Carndonagh Community School for St. Paul’s SS, Oughterard pupil Anna Fahey at half time and the resurgence seemed to work wonders for the Irish scholars.

Both McLaughlin and Palmerstown CS starlet Jessie Stapleton came close to grabbing an equaliser early on but inform Kiya Webb denied the deadly duo.

The pace and intensity of the Irish was building momentum as the half progressed and their hard working endeavour paid off midway through as Manorhamilton’s Muireann Devaney created a sensational goal to level proceedings

A new found confidence, saw the Irish take the lead ten minutes later through super sub Erin McLaughlin as she headed home a Shauna Brennan cross with six minutes remaining.

Kerry Brown of Moville Community College was unlucky not to capitalise on some poor defending as Webb averted a dangerous ball in the box late on with another fine save moments later as Erin McLaughlin pounced for her brace.

It was an absorbing contest and a game of two halves as the Republic of Ireland were showing their pedigree as the game progressed, with the late win merited.

In the other pairings on Match Day 3, the Northern Ireland ‘A’ squad enjoyed a 2-0 victory over defending Champions Wales while their counterparts, Northern Ireland ‘B’ were outdone 3-0 by Scotland.

The U15 Girls’ had a sensational season with Head Coach Richard Berkeley at the helm. The Tallaght native who is applying his trade as a teacher in Sancta Maria College, Louisburgh remained unbeaten heading into this tournament. The 18 players selected were exceptional with only one goal conceded throughout their competitive outings. This came in their 2-1 victory over Northern Ireland in their February friendly in Dublin followed up a month later with a 3-0 win away to England in the John Read Trophy in Stafford.

Following their performances, the girls notched up 11 goals in three games with a solidarity goal from Hudson the only one conceded from the Hayes Coen and Askainyte combo!  A remarkable achievement considering the high standard of football on display from the other five teams competing.

The Bob Docherty Cup will make a welcome return to the Republic following an eight year absence. The last squad to triumph included Senior Internationals Amber Barrett (Loreto Community School, Milford) and Katie McCabe (St. Paul’s SS, Greenhills) as well as that day’s match winning hero Gemma McGuinness (Moville Community College), Carys Johnson (Coláiste Muire, Buttevant), Sarah Rowe (St. Mary’s SS, Ballina) and Schools’ Captain Chloe Mustaki (St. Kilian’s Deutsch Schule).

A new chapter has been written by the Class of 2018 who can be extremely proud of their accomplishments!

Republic of Ireland: Rugile AskaInyte (St. Mary’s Holy Faith Convent, Glasnevin), Abbie Clarke(Muckross Park College, Donnybrook), Shauna Brennan (Claregalway College), Therese Kinnevey (St. Paul’s Secondary School, Ougherard), Jessie Stapleton (Palmerstown Community School), Aoibheann Clancy(Presentation Secondary School, Thurles), Aoife Horgan (St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Ballybunion), Della Doherty (Captain) (Coláiste Iosagain, Portarlington), Anna Fahey (St. Paul’s Secondary School, Ougherard),Muireann Devaney (St. Clare’s Comprehensive School, Manorhamilton), Ellen Molloy (Presentation Secondary School, Kilkenny)

Subs Used: Erin McLaughlin (Carndonagh Community School) for Fahey (HT), Kerry Brown (Moville Community College) for Molloy (47), Kate O’Dowd (St. Nathy’s College, Ballaghaderreen) for Doherty (59).

Colin Bell's side know they must defeat the reigning European Champions if they are to qualify for the UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship in Lithuania later this summer.

Speaking ahead of the game, Bell said preparations are going well in Greifswald.

"We had a training session this morning, and worked on some final tactics, and we will prepare this afternoon to pinpoint some of Germany's weaknesses.

"They are the European champions of this age group. You're not going to be playing against better teams at this level.

Bell has seen Wednesday's opponents defeat Azerbaijan and Iceland in their opening two games and has been impressed with what he has seen.

"They're a top team. We know what we're up against. It's up to us to find a way of stifling Germany's strengths.'

Despite playing two games in the past six days, Bell expects to have a full squad to choose from ahead of the final Elite Round match.

In the second game between the sides in three days, Romania U18 avenged their 2-1 weekend defeat to Ireland U18 as they ran out 1-0 winners in today’s friendly in Whitehall.

Following a tight opening, Romanian broke the deadlock when striker Pop Alexandru opened the scoring against the run of play in the 28th minute.

Ireland enjoyed the lionshare of possession throughout the game, but could not carve open any clear opportunities to trouble Tarnvanu Stefan in the Romanian goal as the visitors held on.

Speaking after the game Ireland Head Coach Jim Crawford was disappointed with the result. “We gave away a silly goal. We addressed it at half time and asked the players to keeping playing and doing the right things. Romania were dogged and defended well but we didn’t create enough clear cut chances.

“The positives over the two games are that a lot of lads made their debuts and now understand what it takes to play at international level.  That experience will stand to them for a long time. Today’s result is disappointing but there are lots of learnings there for players and staff going forward.”

A penalty from Troy Parrott eight minutes into the second-half guaranteed three points and top spot in Group 3.

The win also ensured that Ireland will be the only team to qualify for the UEFA Under-17 European Championship with six wins from six in the Qualifying and Elite Rounds.

Under-17 Head Coach Colin O'Brien was delighted to end the campaign unbeaten.

"It's been a fantastic campaign. There was a lot of tension today with Poland looking to qualify too. The crowd were trying to get behind their team from the off.

"People in the squad are playing for places for the European Championships now. We made changes today and those player impressed. It's all about making the squad stronger ahead of the Finals.

U19 v Portugal.jpg

Two goals either side of half-time saw Portugal book their place in Finland later this year, as the team look to add to the UEFA Under-17 European Championship they won two years ago.

Portugal took the lead after ten minutes, as Gedson Fernandes saw his deflected shot beat goalkeeper Mark Travers. Captain Diogo Queirós doubled Portugal's lead just before half-time heading home an attacking free-kick.

Ireland played the last 30-minutes with ten men after Aaron Connolly was sent off for two bookable offences and Portugal took advantage with two further goals.

Substitute Pedro Correia saw his shot find the bottom left corner of the net with 20-minutes to go, before Fernandes scored a fourth from the penalty spot to ensure qualification.

Under-19 Head Coach Tom Mohan was disappointed after the game, but praised Portugal, and wished them well in the Finals.

"We were beaten by the better team, and a top class opponent. They won the Under-17 title two years ago and have a brilliant chance to win the Under-19 title this summer.

"The team had chances early on but weren't able to take them. Portugal's movement and slickness of passing was excellent. It's a disappointing result.

"It was a massive effort all week by the players and staff. It was a huge group effort by everyone and we're all disappointed."

Kosovo's 2-1 win over Slovakia in Group 5's other game, meant Ireland finished the Elite Round in second place.

Ireland U21: Crucial 96th minute winner for King's men

A 96th minute goal from Shaun Donnellan gave Ireland a crucial win in their European Under-21 Championship Qualifying Round match in Tallaght Stadium.

Shaun Donnellan got on the end of Ryan Manning’s inviting free kick to scramble home a priceless winner for Noel King’s side.

Up until that point Ireland had been frustrated by the visitors, with Kamran Ibrahimov in fine form in the Azerbaijan goal.

In the opening half, Derry City attacker Ronan Curtis looked lively throughout and his strike on goal could only be parried by Kamran Ibrahimov in the Azeri goal. The onrushing Reece Grego-Cox was first to the breaking ball but Ibrahimov smoothered his close range effort.

Ireland came flying out of the blocks in the second period. Jake Mulraney was unlucky to see his appeals for a penalty waved away while Ryan Manning’s 25 yard free kick was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Ibrahimov.

Noel King’s side continued to press with Shaun Donnellan and Ronan Hale seeing their shots on goal block by last ditch defending.

However, following a free kick won after Olamide Shodipo was upended out wide, Manning delivered for Donnellan to send the Tallaght Stadium crowd wild.

Colin Bell's side needed to win the game to have any chance of qualifying for the UEFA Women's Under-17 Championship, but Germany proved too much for Ireland.

Goals from Emilie Bernhardt and a penalty from captain Ivana Fuso guaranteed Germany's spot in this summer's Finals.

Speaking after the game, Head Coach Colin Bell said he was proud of the performance put in by the team, despite conceding two goals.

"We reduced Germany to a penalty and a free-kick. Other than that they didn't have once clear chance from open play.

"There were positives to take from all three games, but plenty to learn too. The girls will take the experience with them into next season"

Iceland's 3-1 win over Azerbaijan in Group 7's other match, mean Ireland finished in third place.

Republic of Ireland Women’s Under-19 Head Coach Dave Connell has named a 20-player squad for the UEFA Women’s Under-19 Championship Elite Round.

Connell’s side will play three games over the course of a six day period, with each game taking place in Turners Cross.

Austria are first up for Ireland, a side the Girls in Green drew 1-1 with in 2017. Next up will be a tough test for Ireland as they take on Spain, who go into the group as red-hot favourites having won last year’s European Championship Finals tournament in Northern Ireland.

Dave Connell has had success against the Spanish in the past, memorably leading his side to a 1-0 win over Spain at the UEFA Women’s Under-19 Championship Finals in 2014.

The final group game will see Connell’s side taking on Turkey on Sunday, April 8.

Speaking following his squad announcement, Connell was looking forward to the challenge.

“We have a good mix of youth and experience at this age group. We have 11 players that will still be eligible next year so it will be good for them to get a taste of what is expected at this level.

“The older players realise this is their last chance at underage before they progress to senior level and they are focussed on achieving something. We understand how big a task it will be. No one is tipping us to progress but we will prepare right and be ready to go.

“We are concentrating on our own performances and working to ensure we are consistent throughout. Cork has been a happy hunting ground for us in the past and we’ll be aiming to continue that run.”
