The European Championship runners-up struck lucky very early in the game when a deflected clearance fell kindly to Jamie Tregaskiss who struck a volley in from close range.

It was to be a uphill battle for the boys in green from there on in yet Ireland maintained possession for long periods of the first half and threatened the English goal on a number of occasions.

Both Christy McElligott and James Boyle forced saves from the keeper but it was England who found the net again before the break.

A lofted ball from deep bounced just on the edge of the Irish box and Rhys Ramsden just managed to flick it past the onrushing James Conroy.

The second half continued in the same vein with England happy to sit back and maintain their advantage. David Tweed added a third goal and the game finished 3-0.

It was a disappointing result for Ireland but a gutsy and disciplined performance against quality opposition that they can be proud of.

Next up for Ireland is a must-win game against Uruguay on Tuesday, who have also lost to both England and Mexico, with passage to the Round of 16 at stake.
