Green Shoots: Tracking Irish players abroad

Top Performer
Barry Roche (Morecambe)
Never one to make too many headlines, Roche recorded a clean sheet for League Two side Morecambe away to Oxford United last Saturday without much fanfare. The 33-year-old has been at the club since 2008 and racked up impressive numbers during that time, so he was overdue some praise.

Watch Out For
Kenny McEvoy (Stevenage)
After joining on loan for a month from Tottenham Hotspur, this Waterford native could stand out in a team managed by Teddy Sheringham if he gets the opportunity to showcase his knack of ghosting past defenders, executing defence-splitting passes, and generally wreaking havoc in the attacking third.

Irish Manager Monitor
In the Championship, Chris Hughton’s Brighton & Hove Albion were reduced to 10 men but still drew 2-2 away to Bolton Wanderers, while Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich Town fought back against Bristol City to also draw 2-2.

Further Afield
In the USL, Danny Earls provided an assist early on for Pittsburgh Riverhounds in their play-off clash with New York Red Bulls II but ulimately lost 4-2 in extra-time. In the NASL, both Colin Falvy and Richie Ryan started for Ottawa Fury in their 3-1 triumph over Carolina Railhawks.

In the Dutch Eredivisie, midfielder Jack Byrne started for Cambuur in their 3-3 draw away to Utrecht. Cillian Sheridan came on as a late substitute for Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia in their 2-1 win away to Ayia Napa. Over in Finland, Shane McFaul played for KTP in their 1-1 draw with HJK.

Women’s Focus
In England’s WSL, Niamh Fahey helped Chelsea Ladies take a step closer to winning the title by beating Liverpool Ladies 4-0, while Stephanie Roche came on as a substitute for Sunderland Ladies in their 3-1 loss to Arsenal Ladies, who had Emma Byrne on the bench. And goalkeeper Grace Moloney helped Reading Women secure promotion to WSL 1.

In Scotland, Denise O’Sullivan and Clare Shine both started for Glasgow City in the 2-0 win over Spartans. Over in Norway’s Toppserien, Emma Beckett and Emma Salomonsson both started in Amazon Grimstad’s 2-1 victory against Sandviken. Louise Quinn’s Eskilstuna United lost 1-0 away to Pitea but remain top of Sweden’s Damallsvenskan.

Hailing from a strong sporting family - his younger brother Donal starred for Dublin in GAA - Martin made his name primarily with Shelbourne, where he enjoyed great success.

A member of the League-winning team in the 1952/53 season, Martin also featured in two FAI Cup finals over the course of his seven seasons with the Dublin club.

Martin's ability saw him earn two Ireland senior caps - making his debut against Belgium in 1950 and also playing against Norway - and seven inter-League caps, and he was held in high esteem by those who watched him play.

The Chief Executive of the Football Association of Ireland, John Delaney said: "Martin was a fantastic servant to Irish football and went on to play twice for Ireland. We offer sympathies to his family and friends and we will honour his memory at our UEFA EURO 2016 qualifier against Germany at Aviva Stadium next month."

A funeral mass will take place in Mount Argus on Tuesday, September 29 at 11.30am.

Hannah Flatley gave Manulla the lead after 17 mins in what was a very tight and entertaining game in Gainstown. Five minutes into extra-time Gerrard popped up to score what proved to be the winner for Boyne. Manulla had chances to draw level before the finish but couldn’t find a way past Aishling Dyer in the Boyne goal.

Tom Mohan UEFA.jpg

Tom Mohan's side began the campaign with two impressive victories - 1-0 over hosts Finland and 6-0 against Malta on Saturday - but they can boost their chances of a top seeding in the Elite Qualifying Round with at least a draw against the Swedes.

"We've done so well until now and you want to finish it off on a high with a good performance against Sweden," said Mohan.

"We have to look at the preparation for the Elite Phase straight away and it'll be an opportunity for all the players to show that they can perform."

FAI welcomes SSE Airtricity League Consultation Process Report

DeclanConroy.jpg

The paper was written by independent consultant Declan Conroy (Conroy Consulting) and commissioned by the Board of the Football Association of Ireland, at the start of the 2015 season, following the National League Convention in 2014.

The report was delivered to the member clubs of the SSE Airtricity League at FAI HQ in Abbotstown last Monday night, and was presented to the media on today.

In its content, the 75-page document recommends a radical shake-up of the overall league structure, an increase in prize-money, the development of a more strategic business operational approcach, a  ‘Q-Mark’ for clubs.

Within the report, there are 44 pages of findings on the current state of the SSE Airtricity League, divided across seven themes: 1) Passions and tradition, 2) Roles and responsibilities, 3) Sustainability of the clubs, 4) Operating structures of the League, 5) Financing the League, 6) Products and people and 7) The Brand – marketing and promotion, based on feedback from the stakeholder groups.

In analysing the sustainability of clubs, the report focuses on three specific areas, Business and Commercial, Sport, and Community Relations and Stakeholder Management, in addition to looking at the 11 departments within the FAI which interact with the SSE Airtricity League.

While finding that progress that has been made since the merger between the clubs and the FAI in 2007, it also highlights areas within the merged entity that need to be addressed, both by the FAI and by clubs to secure the long-term sustainability and success of the League.

The report sets out a vision for the League to 2020 for discussion and ultimately proposes a new League structure, a new match format, a new brand identity, enhanced promotion and marketing, and new standards for clubs.

There are 18 recommendations aligned to this proposal for discussion between the FAI and the clubs.

Key amongst these are:

  • ·       Restructuring, reformatting and rebranding of the League from 2017
  • ·       Two 10-team divisions
  • ·       More meaningful games / ‘occasions’
  • ·       New play-off for the third UEFA Europa League place
  • ·       Increased opportunities for promotion / relegation from 2017
  • ·       Up to three promotions and three relegations from each Division annually
  • ·       Split format – Three series’ of nine games, then top six and bottom four are split, followed by a four-team round-robin for promotion / relegation.
  • ·       Recommended increase in prize money and a more even distribution
  • ·       Clubs to develop more community activity with support from the FAI and other agencies
  • ·       Appointment of a ‘League Champion’
  • ·       Appointment of a dedicated PR resource
  • ·       Q-mark to increase standards at all clubs

In 2017, the report proposes that the League be re-branded and re-launched. To achieve this, 2016 is proposed as a transitional season with three or four teams relegated from the Premier Division and one or two teams promoted from the First Division.

Commercially, the report found that the cost of operating the League outweighs the revenues received by the FAI. It recommends that international TV rights opportunities be pursued with any incremental revenues to accrue to clubs, the pursuit of dedicated League sponsors ring-fenced from the FAI’s overall sponsorship portfolio from 2017, as well as separate sponsorship categories for the National U19 and National U17 leagues, into the future.

In arriving at its final proposal, the report outlines four possible options: 1) Status Quo, 2) Disbandment of the merger agreement between the clubs and the FAI, 3) The creation of a franchised operation, 4) A new League structure, new League format, new brand. The report recommends the fourth option.

The report was presented to the FAI Board of Management on September 22, it was presented to the SSE Airtricity League clubs last Monday evening and to the media today.

Speaking today FAI CEO John Delaney thanked Declan Conroy for “the most comprehensive and thorough review of senior domestic football in Ireland”. Mr Delaney said: “I want to thank the Board of the FAI for commissioning this report. This marks a very important analysis of the current landscape and potential pathways forward for the SSE Airtricity League.

"I want to pay tribute to the clubs, who were presented with the report on Monday, in what was a very constructive meeting, and I want to thank them for their imputs. We now look forward to working with the clubs to agree a process to discuss the consultation document in detail, and the Association will be writing to the clubs this week to establish a timetable to move forward.”

Ireland U17s draw with Swedes to top group

U17 v Sweden.JPG

Tom Mohan's side ensured top spot and the opportunity for a better seeding in the Elite Phase draw after an impressive three games in Finland this week.

Glen McAuley scored Ireland's goal just before half-time and the Irish looked set to record a clean sweep of victories before conceding a late equaliser from Chelsea's Joseph Colley with three minutes left.

Declan Rice had an early opportunity in the third minute after a Daniel McKenna corner but his effort was off target.

Striker McAuley had a chance in the 27th minute but Swedish keeper Pontus Dahlberg made a save but two minutes later Irish keeper Paul Martin was called into action to deny Seaed Haksabanovic. In the 32nd minute Martin made another save from Joel Asoro .

Four mintues later Dahlberg kept out an effort from Jayson Molumby before McAuley eventually opened the scoring in the 39th minute when he turned the ball home at the back post after Rice had knocked the ball back in following an Irish corner.

Two minutes into the second half Aidan Keena had a chance to extend Ireland's lead but he missed the target. Ireland defended for long spells and were comfortable but unfortunately a defensive mix-up allowed  Colley an equaliser in the 77th minute.

Mikey Cregan might have grabbed an injury-time winner but his shot was blocked.

"It's great to top the group - it was a tough battle as the Swedes needed to win to top the group," said Mohan.

"We got a good goal and had our chances. Unfortunately they got a gift equaliser which was a pity as overall we’d defended really well.

"This result gives us a better opportunity to have a better draw for the Elite Phase. Overall this week has been a great effort frim players, staff, everybody really.

"There was massive work put in. The players were brilliant - they prepared well, showed real professionalism on and off pitch and they played some very good football. They worked very hard and we were disappointed not to get the three clean sheets for them but to concede just goal one in three goals and scoring eight ourselves is very good.

"Now we'll turn our heads to the Elite Phase. We'll look to get some friendlies in and nail down dates and get around to games to prepare for the next challenge. We had four or five players out through injuries so it showed that there is strength in depth at this age group."

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: Paul Martin, Daniel McKenna (Michael Cregan 62), Tyreke Wilson, Declan Rice, Canice Carroll, Jayson Molumby, Lee O'Connor, Stephen Mallon, Lukas Browning, Dara O'Shea, Glen McAuley (Aidan Keena 41).

SWEDEN: Pontus Dahlberg, Hugo Andersson, Oscar Krusnell, Johan Stenmark, Anel Ahmedhodzic, Joseph Colley ( 77), Mattias Svanberg, Joel Asoro, Sead Haksabanovic, Henrik Bellman (Alexander Isak 58), Teddy Bergqvist (Oscar Pettersson 78)

Doolin names U19 squad for Ukraine friendlies

U19 v Italy.JPG

Doolin's squad were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Italy earlier this month but the Irish boss wants them to show progression in these two fixtures as they prepare for the UEFA U19 Championships Qualifying Round which takes place in Galway and Limerick in November.

"Going back to the Italy game, the first half we did ok and were 1-0 up but I felt the second half that day Italy were the better side and there's a lot we have to improve upon," said Doolin.

"We're going into these two games still looking at players and still trying to find an eleven for the competitive games which doesn't help matters. It's a strong enough Qualifying Round group that we're in. Even going back to when they were U17s there were a few positions that needed to be nailed down.

"Some players who were in Italy and some lads who weren't involved will be in consideration for the qualifiers. We are still looking at the wider group.

"I'm looking forward to seeing Olamide Shodipo who is in good form for QPR. He's a strong attacking player and gives you that threat which is important. At this level you need strong quick players who can make an impact.

"Ryan Sweeney has done well with Wimbledon and was injured last time so it'll be good to work with him. We've a few 1998s involved too and home-based players who've got potential also. It's another opportunity for the likes of Dylan Watts and Daire O'Conchubhair who played 45 minutes in Italy. We're also looking at players like Trevor Clarke and Colm Deasy who came home from the UK to SSE Airtricity League clubs."

Doolin is pleased that his side will be tested by the Ukrainians rather than playing a lesser side which may not have provided his squad with the right level of challenge to prepare for the qualifiers.

"Limerick will be a good opportunity for us. The facilities are good and the pitch is excellent," he said.

"Ukraine played in tournament with Serbia, Montenegro, we've played them in qualifiers and they have quick technical players. There is merit in playing tough teams at this level. Our opponents in the group are all strong. Slovenia have played 12 games this year, Latvia will be decent enough and Scotland were semi-finalists at U17 level with these lads so the challenge is obvious."

St.Catherines LFC 0-6 Shelbourne U18 LFC

Shels proved too strong for St.Catherine’s with a second half blitz that saw the FAI Women's Senior Cup semi-finalists to an emphatic victory.

Shianne Swares gave Shels the lead after eight minutes, Catherines keeper Sara Kechkar couldn’t hold Emma Chamberlain’s cross leaving Swares to tap home.

Murphy got her first of the night on 23 minutes, racing onto the ball just ahead of Kechar and finishing into an empty net.

Both Catherines and Shels hit the post before the break with Ealish Murray unlucky for Catherines and the woodwork denying Swares her second.

The game spun totally into Shelbourne’s favour 10 minutes into the second half, Lisa Murphy won the ball from Amy Keating with Kechkar unable to prevent Murphy’s second.

Murphy grabbed her hat-trick on 59 minutes, flicking the ball over Amy McLoughlin before calmly sliding the ball home.

Murphy brought her tally for the night to four on 65 minutes finishing off Chamberlian’s corner, before rounding off the scoring on 68 minutes, Kechkar unable to hold Murphy’s long range drive.

U21 v Andorra.jpg

The Irish host the Lithuanians at the RSC in Waterford on Friday, October 9 (5.45pm), then travel to Vicenza to face the Italians on Tuesday, October 13 (4.00pm Irish).

After victories in their opening two games against Andorra home and away the Irish are in a healthy position heading into the Lithuanian fixture and King wants home advantage to tell to maintain a 100 per cent winning start to the group. Lithuania have lost all three of their opening games.

"Unfortunately we lost Tommie Hoban and Brian Lenihan through injury but losing players is always part of international football and it allows opportunities for others to show what they are capable of," said King.

"We'll hope that everybody comes clear of their games over the weekend and that we can focus on the Lithuania game from there.

"This is a big game for us and we’ll be looking for a strong home support. We're playing well as a team but we just need to keep improving and keep it going.

"I've seen a lot of Lithuania. They are big and strong and will try to play and win the game. They were caught on the break against Andorra after having all the possession so there's a lesson in that."

Paul Osam confirmed as Republic of Ireland U16 Head Coach

$

Osam is a UEFA A licensed coach who had an illustrious playing career with St Patrick's Athletic and Shamrock Rovers and has been involved in numerous underage international teams in recent years.

He was Head Coach of the Ireland U18 Home-based international squad that played two games against Wales earlier this year, winning one and drawing the other fixture. Osam has also worked with Emerging Talent Programme selects at the Mayo Cup and worked with the Future Developers squad which played two games in England in August.

"I am honoured to have been given this opportunity and hope to help the players I'll be working with bridge the gap between the Under-15 international squad with Colin O'Brien and progress to Tom Mohan's U17 squad," said Osam, who is also FAI Development Officer for Westmeath.

"The process which took place to get the job was a long and daunting process with different elements including a group discussion, which was a little bit daunting, then an interview and a practical situation which included taking a session and coaching players, analysing and debriefing the players afterwards.

"I've been involved with a number of international teams in recent years and hope that those experiences will stand to me in good stead. We have to prepare for the Victory Shield next month and I'd like to thank my predecessors Tom O'Connor and Denis Hyland for their help with identifying players and other aspects of preparing for the first assignment.

"I'll also be linking in with the SSE Airtricity League U17 managers who have players eligible for this age group and the Emerging Talent Programme centres around the country and we'll also have an assessment day and hopefully a trial day before we pick the squad for the tournament. There's a lot to be done in a short space of time but I'm looking forward to it."

Shaw motivated to reach Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup Final

GaryShaw.jpg

The Longford Town striker, who does brilliant work for the FAI's Commerical Department, may not have filled out the holiday request form for Sunday, November 8 but it's a task that is very much on his mind.

First he must help his team book their place in that showpiece event. Not an easy feat to achieve considering SSE Airtricity League Premier Division champions Dundalk stand in their way in a crunch semi-final - at Oriel Park of all places.

Shaw, however, is unfussed about the opposition. Sure he respects Dundalk and knows how difficult it will be to outwit them on their own patch, but he is very much someone who focuses on what he can control.

"Dundalk are flying high in the League and they obviously want to get the domestic double but we want to stop that. But we've done well against them in our last couple of games and we'll be ready for them," said Shaw.

The powerful striker does not need to say it, but he's clearly just taking one game at a time. How could he not considering this is a massive semi-final? But if he is feeling any pressure he is certainly not showing it.

Even a mention of his lack of luck in front of goal of late is dealt with in a manner typical of his coolness. He acknowledges that he needs to end his barren run but also knows that he can help his team in other ways.

"It's been a tough season in terms of scoring goals as they haven't been going in for me but I feel my general play all round has been the best that it's been," stated Shaw.

"I'm providing assists and working hard every game and that is why Tony (Cousins) keeps picking me. A lot of people have told me that it's written in the stars that I'll score against Dundalk - let's hope so."

Longford supporters have fond memories of this competition having won it in 2003 and 2004, so Shaw is fully aware of the club's history and that provides him with another reason to reach the final next month.

Gary Shaw couldn't have got any closer to the FAI Cup final in the Aviva Stadium last year as he stood on the sidelines as part of his job. This November, he wants a day off in order to be on the pitch.

First up will be the meeting of Dundalk and Longford Town at Oriel Park on Friday evening. With a successful defence of their League title virtually wrapped up with four games to go, Dundalk are eyeing a first double in 27 years but they face a Longford Town side that has done well in the top flight following their promotion from the First Division last season.

Dundalk have to go back to 2002 for their last FAI Cup Final appearance when, ironically, they beat a Bohemians side managed by their current boss Stephen Kenny. In another twist, Kenny began his managerial career at Longford while his opposite number, Tony Cousins, started his League of Ireland career at Dundalk.  Longford won back to back FAI Cups in 2003 and 2004 and appeared in the 2007 final at the RDS where they lost 1-0 to Cork City.

The Leesiders have been through a lot and are looking to reach their first final since then. Manager John Caulfield was handed a new contract this week and would love to follow that up with a first trophy but his side face a tricky trip on Sunday to the Carlisle Grounds to face a Bray Wanderers side that have been rejuvenated under the stewardship of Mick Cooke.

Cooke knows all about cup finals having guided Drogheda United to three cup finals in 2013 after winning the EA SPORTS Cup Final in 2012 and is looking to steer Bray to a third cup final and their first since 1999.

If replays are required then the Cork City v Bray Wanderers replay is scheduled for Monday, October 12 at 7.45pm in Turner’s Cross while the Longford Town v Dundalk replay would take place on Tuesday, October 13, in City Calling Stadium at 7.45pm. Replays will be played to a finish wih provision for extra-time and penalty. The 2015 Irish Daily Mail FAI Senior Cup Final is scheduled for Sunday, November 8, in Aviva Stadium.

Elsewhere, there is an outstanding SSE Airtricity League game on Friday where Galway United host Sligo Rovers at Eamonn Deacy Park in a Connacht derby.

Introduction:
The Road to the Aviva continues this weekend as the semi-finals of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Senior Cup take place on Friday and Sunday with both games being shown live on RTÉ2. None of the four teams left in the competition have played at the Aviva Stadium so that adds extra spice as they face the final hurdle before a yearned for trip to Dublin 4.

Dundalk remain on course for double

Barrett powered home with a thumping header in the 36th minute to give Dundalk the lead before Ronan Finn, with the aid of a Pat Sullivan deflection, put the result beyond the midlanders just four minutes after the restart.

The Lilywhites will now face Cork City or Bray Wanderers in the showpiece at the Aviva Stadium on November 8. And, with the SSE Airtricity League title all but secured, the Lilywhites know that victory in the final on November 8 would complete the club’s third league and FAI Cup double and first since 1988.

Longford goalkeeper Paul Skinner should have been tested as early as the fourth minute. Sean Gannon’s brilliant pass cut the Longford defence apart but Ciaran Kilduff could only steer his effort wide of the post after leaving Pat Sullivan in his wake.

The home side remained on the front foot and Mountney set up Richie Towell for a pop in the 13th minute. Towell shifted the ball onto his left foot but the shot lacked the venom to bother Skinner.

The league’s top scorer went closer four minutes later, curling a free-kick just over Skinner’s crossbar after Philip Gannon was penalised for a late tackle on Mountney, 25-yards from goal.

A sustained period of pressure by the Lilywhites ended with Towell curling another left footed effort past Skinner, only to see it come back off the crossbar.

The goal that divided the sides at the break arrived four minutes later. Daryl Horgan’s corner from the right found Paddy Barrett and the centre back’s header had enough to beat Pat Sullivan on the far post.

Longford’s hopes of finding a route back into the game were dealt a hammer blow just four minutes into the second half. Daryl Horgan picked out Ronan Finn and his drive took a wicked, wicked deflection off the unfortunate Sullivan, leaving Skinner completely flatfooted.

From then on it was a case of how many Dundalk would get with Horgan, Finn, Towell and Dane Massey all seeing efforts just miss the target.

Tony Cousins turned to his substitutes bench in a bid to salvage something but David O’Sullivan’s 82nd minute shot into Rogers’ midriff and a late Gary Shaw drive were their only chances of note.

DUNDALK: Rogers; Gannon, Boyle, Barrett, Massey; Towell, O’Donnell; Mountney (Meenan 42), Finn (Shields 75), Horgan; Kilduff (McMillan 81).

LONGFORD TOWN: Skinner; Haverty, Sullivan, Gorman, Powell;  Rice, Gannon; Shannon (Deady 86), Salmon (O’Sullivan 60), Simon (Mulhall 66); Shaw.

REFEREE: Paul McLaughlin.

Continental Tyres WNL Shield enters final series

Wexford Youths WAFC have impressed in the new competition and will look to continue their good run of form as they take on Cork City WFC in their Group A clash at Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday.

On Sunday, Galway WFC welcome Peamount United to Eamonn Deacy Park for a Group B showdown, while Kilkenny United WFC play host to UCD Waves in their Group A duel.

The beginning of the regular season may be rapidly approaching but winning the Shield is something that each of the teams would like to achieve, including Wexford who lifted the WNL title last season.

"The Shield is the first trophy on offer this season and we want to keep on winning," said Wexford manager Will Doyle, who is fully aware of the threat posed by Cork.

There are plenty of intriguing plots in each of the games, e.g. Galway could hand a debut to Republic of Ireland Women's Under 19 captain Savannah McCarthy, but it is the three points that will ultimately be on most people's minds.

The fixture between Shelbourne Ladies FC and Castlebar Celtic, which was scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 3, has been called off.
