The official launch of the SJ.B (St Joseph’s/Bray) Academy took place in the Academy Grounds in Carrickmines on Tuesday evening.

The official opening was attended by over 100 members and distinguished guests including FAI CEO John Delaney, High Performance Director Ruud Dokter, Republic of Ireland U16 Head Coach Paul Osam, as well as Minister of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell-O'Connor, TD.

SJB Academy Director Niall O’Driscoll addressed the assembled crowd by saying, "The vision of SJB Academy is firstly identifying, recruiting, developing & retaining well rounded players with the ability to play professional football with Bray Wanderers under the guidance of highly motivated, highly qualified coaches. Also, ensuring that participation in the Academy will ‘Create Value for Our Players Futures’ beyond the duration of their time in the Academy in terms of Education and Employment,” he said.

“Through the Elite Development Programme we want to attract the best young players and support them in all aspects of a player’s technical, tactical, athletic, educational and social development. Our ultimate objective is to develop well rounded, highly educated, talented young footballers that progress up the development ladder.”

St Joseph's/Bray Under 17 SSE Airtricity League manager Will Clarke said that “the Academy is a pathway from 5-year olds to the Bray first team. The aim is to become the best academy in the country over the next few years”.

FAI CEO John Delaney commented upon the opening, “I want to congratulate both St Joseph’s Boys and Bray Wanderers. It is a credit to their commitment to underage football that they have established the first dedicated underage football academy following FAI guidelines."

“This dedicated academy is something that both St Joseph’s and Bray Wanderers can be proud of, and is something that we in turn at the FAI can point to when it comes to developing similar facilities around the country, as an example of what can be achieved," he added.

FAI High Performance Director Rudd Dokter added, “this is a clear path way for the growth of underage football."

French fall for College & Universities

Ireland Squad.jpg.jpeg

Ireland fell behind early on from a Clement Bassin goal before rallying back through goals from Sean McLoughlin and Garbhan Coughlan to lead at the interval before early second half goals from Valentin Candas and Denis Frodgan delivered victory for the home side.

Les Bleus took the lead on 12 minutes when Sean McLoughlin was dispossessed by full back Teddy Garcin on the left-hand side. Garcin would advance into the box and cross for Clement Bassin to guide the ball into the corner.

Ireland responded within minutes when Jason McClelland over hit his free kick from the wide left but Ross Taheny was able to retrieve it on the far touchline and laid it back to Jamie Hollywood. Hollywood’s cross found UCC’s Sean McLoughlin just inside the box and the centre half able to get his shot off which took a small deflection to beat the keeper inside the near post.

For the rest of the half, both teams were evenly matched although Garbhan Coughlan came close with a shot from 18 yards after clever work from O’Connor.

With half-time approaching, the Students put their best passage of play together with UCD’s Daire O’Connor and Jason McClelland working together to put Shane Daly-Butz through on the right-hand side. The Cork man dragged his shot across the face of goal with Coughlan alert to put the ball into the net at the back post.

The French sent out a complete different eleven in the second half and caught the Irish team cold within 26 seconds of the second half when a quick throw in allowed Valentin Candas to get his name on the scoresheet.

Coughlan and O’Connor both tried to regain the advantage immediately with substitute keeper Tangi Seznec able to withstand their best efforts.

On 52 minutes, whilst having safe possession, Greg Sloggett got caught by a quick press by Denis Frodgan who raced through to slot past Matthew Connor in the Irish goal

There were few opportunities in the second half for either team to score with both defences neutralising any threats their opponents could muster up. O’Connor thought he had equalised for his side when he picked up the ball 30 yards out and put the ball into the top corner but the referee had the whistle blown whilst his shot was in mid-flight for a foul on Coughlan much to the annoyance of the Irish who sought an advantage to be played.

With Ireland pushing forward in search of an equaliser, there were moments for the French to seal victory late on with Candas horribly miscuing his shot when one on one.

Both sides will face each other again in 72 days’ time in Taipei in the opening round of Pool A of the World University Games.

France 1st half: A Nagor, T Garcin, H Berol, O Kebe, A Prault, B Tardivel, E Thibaut, S Pignatelli, V Sanson, P Mayer, C Bassin.

France 2nd half: T Seznec, D Erdogan, V Rougeot, J Framery, J Guillaue, M Louchart, C Chastang, T Delaitre, M Houas, V Candas, M Ewisso.

Ireland: M Connor (I Molloy 75’), M Nugent (B McAuliffe 65’), S McLoughlin, R Taheny, G Kinneen (D Brookes 70’), J Hollywood (D Pender 70’), G Sloggett, S Daly-Butz (A Kehoe 45’), D O’Connor (C Barry 65’), J McClelland (J Lyons 56’), G Coughlan.

Cup winner Campbell relishing WNT return

The Manchester City defender has missed the last 15 months of international duty due to a broken foot injury she sustained against Austria in the Cyprus Cup in March 2016.

Having recently returned to the starting XI for her club side, Campbell could see her first taste of action since the appointment of Head Coach Colin Bell against Iceland tomorrow night at Tallaght Stadium.

The 23-year old defender hopes to get back on the pitch for the Republic of Ireland tomorrow night and is enjoying her new experience with Head Coach Bell.

Campbell said: “It has been a difficult year or so. It was a difficult injury to overcome and it’s been such a long time since I was last with the squad.

“I’ve enjoyed being back in the squad and I’m ready to be a part of it again. There are some new, old and young faces which is great and I’m really looking forward to the occasion.

“It’s been different working with Colin. I really hope working him and his different methods can improve me as a player and I’m sure he can help us kick on as a team.”

Following Campbell’s return from injury, the Drogheda-born defender played a crucial part in Manchester City’s Women’s FA Cup win, claiming two assists in a 4-1 final win over Birmingham City.

Having claimed five assists in her first three games back from injury, Campbell admits she didn’t expect to be able to get upto speed so quickly.

She added: “Honestly, Manchester City are a massive club and that is their mentality to win trophies but I really didn’t expect it.

“I didn’t think I’d be in the starting XI or the squad for the FA Cup final so it was a great feeling to be part of such a great occasion so soon after coming back.

“I think being injured has definitely made me stronger, physically and mentally, and I’m ready to bring that into the international side now. It’s a really good test for us tomorrow as they’re such a strong side but we need to use it well ahead of the World Cup qualifier.”

MATCH INFO: The fixture against Iceland kicks-off at 7.30pm at Tallaght Stadium tomorrow evening, tickets priced at €5/€2 which can be purchased on the gate. A match-day programme, which features interviews with Claire O'Riordan and Louise Quinn, will be available for the cost of €2.

Rustlers

Rustlers are Europe's leading brand for proper flame-grilled burgers that are quick to prepare and they will become an official sponsor of the Republic of Ireland teams.

In addition, Rustlers - who are part of the Kepak brand - will also become the new title sponsor of the Colleges and Universities competitions to be relaunched in September 2017.

John Delaney, FAI CEO, said: "We are delighted to enter into this sponsorship arrangement with Rustlers and everyone connected to Kepak. They are an Irish-owned company who have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years and I'm sure they will be fantastic partners.

"What is most pleasing about this link up is that Rustlers will focus heavily on the Colleges and Universities competitions, which for many years now the IUFU, CFAI and WSCAI have played an important part in our footballing development. Their competitions have helped to produce many players for both the SSE Airtricity League and Continental Tyres Women's National League."

Adrian Lawlor, Marketing and Business Development Director for Kepak, said: "This is a really exciting move for us at Kepak. The Rustlers brand has been a great Irish success story and we hope to build on that success with our partners in the FAI and the Republic of Ireland team.

"A key part of this sponsorship will be our support for the Third Level Competitions, under the guidance of the IUFU, CFAI and WSCAI. Plans are in place to work with the FAI to grow both participation of players and fun engagement for football supporters around those competitions, which are an important pillar of football development in Ireland."

REPORT: WNT 0-0 Iceland - Campbell returns in draw

In terrible conditions, Ireland had the better of the chances against Iceland, who are travelling to the European Championships next month, but couldn’t find the break-through.

Both teams had to adjust their touch on the Tallaght Stadium pitch in the early stages due to  the deluge overhead both pre-game and during the 90 minutes of play.

It was Ireland who adjusted better as the returning Megan Campbell, after a 15-month absence with a broken foot, provided most of Ireland’s threat from her destructive long-throws. On two occasions in the first 10 minutes, Ireland failed to capitalise as both Louise Quinn and Megan Connolly mis-timed their leaps.

The best chance of the first 45 minutes came in the 21st minute as Campbell turned from provider to threat. Aine O’Gorman’s corner found Campbell and after placing her header into the slippy surface, the keeper saved well.

Iceland’s first goal-scoring chance of the game came after the break and were brilliantly denied by Marie Hourihan. A Ingibjorg Sigurdardottir corner broke for Katrin Asbjornsdottir at the back-post who flicked the ball towards the top corner but she was brilliantly denied by Manchester City goalkeeper Hourihan in the 59th minute.

Five minutes later, Ireland should have gone ahead.  Again, another O’Gorman corner caused havoc in the six-yard area as the Icelandic keeper failed to collect and Diane Caldwell’s low header towards goal was cleared off the line.

Republic of Ireland Head Coach Colin Bell said: “I’m delighted with my players this evening. They showed tremendous spirit and levels of efforts to get the result tonight.

“The conditions were terrible so we couldn’t play what we wanted to play but the players did really well to adjust to the situation. In fact, in the entire 90 minutes, they only had one chance and that was in the final minute of the game.

“It was great to have Niamh Fahey and Megan Campbell on the pitch this evening. Two quality players and two positive personalities to add to the squad, and there definitely is plenty of competition for places.”

George Hamilton: The Voice of a Nation

Hamilton

He’s soldiered with the Republic of Ireland football team through thick and thin. And as the team grew in might and skill so did Hamilton.

But there was an element of luck in his ascension to the lofty heights of football commentary as his appointment on the Ireland beat coincided with the arrival of Jack Charlton as men’s senior team manager.

“In a way it fell into my lap,” said Hamilton, who had just returned from a stint with the BBC in England when it all worked out for him.

“It was a wave to be surfed. All those iconic moments like Ray Houghton's goals in Stuttgart and New Jersey, the lines like ‘a nation holds it breath,’ you can’t plan for those moments, they come to you. I've been very fortunate to be around when the football team came of age. It's been a terrific journey, the places I've been, the things I've seen and the highs and lows. It's been great.”

A Queens University graduate, opportunity first knocked for Hamilton at the BBC where he started out in rugby and learned his trade. His first visit to the then Lansdowne Road was to cover a Five Nations game between Ireland and Scotland in 1974, but fast forward four decades and it’s like his second home.

The Aviva Stadium is actually more than a place of work for Hamilton. He loves coming to the home ground of the Irish football and rugby teams. Getting into his car and driving to the stadium still fills him with excitement and anticipation.

He likens it to being a player. Walking through the doors of the press room, meeting and greeting his long-time friends and colleagues, finalising his notes and then walking the last few steps to the commentary position...he loves every moment of his match-day routine.

But the work starts long before any ball is kicked. Preparation is vital; the last thing he wants is to read a line in the newspapers after the game that he should have had. So when Martin O'Neill names his squad a couple of weeks out from a game Hamilton will get to work. He will research players, compile information and make detailed notes.

Of course, the landscape is very different for media now than it was when Hamilton first started working with the Ireland team.

His first assignment was for the World Cup in 1978, RTE were in need of an additional commentator so they called Hamilton and he headed off to Argentina. It was a tricky assignment, but it went well for him and when it was over he was offered a job by the national broadcaster.

In those early days there was a close connection between players and the media. They travelled together, often socialised together and regularly built up friendships. For Hamilton that wall that has been erected between players and media has been the biggest change for him in his job. Trust has diminished and friendships are non-existent. There is no longer that close connection between the media and the squad.

But the football is still the same and Hamilton loves it. Ever since he watched his Dad play for Cliftonville as a young chap he’s been hooked. As for commentary, in ways he is a connoisseur and knows what it takes to master the art.

“A good commentator has to have a voice, there's no point trying to be someone who doesn't sound right because you are only going to offend the listener or the viewer. So that has to be the starting point they have to sound ok," he states.

“Radio and television are very different. Radio is a very personal medium, it's only your voice no pictures. When it's pictures your voice compliments them but on the radio it's you and the listener.”

And while there are plenty of people who would love to talk about football matches for a living it’s a tough gig that requires plenty of skill and intuition. When Seamus Coleman suffered his horrific leg beak against Wales back in March, Hamilton had the presence of mind to deal with what was a very difficult situation live on air with complete professionalism.

There have been plenty of good days for Irish supporters and hopefully there will be plenty more. And no doubt Hamilton will be there as company for supporters every step of the way for some time to come.

Martin Hinteregger had given Austria the lead in the first-half from a well-worked corner routine but Man of the Match Walters ensured a share of the points in the 84th minute.

It was a cagey opening for Ireland in a tense Aviva Stadium atmosphere and they had to wait until the 22nd minute to create their first opening. Glenn Whelan’s through-ball was left by Walters for Stephen Ward on the left and after his cross was knocked back to Walters, he fired wide of the left-hand post.

Eight minutes later, Austria took the lead. David Alaba’s low corner found it’s way to Hinteregger who swept the ball home from 10 yards out to silence the Aviva Stadium.

Martin O’Neill’s side needed to go up a level and after the break, they began to create chances. Duffy’s long-ball forward was knocked down by McClean and after Walters was tackled, Harry Arter fired a powerful shot wide of the left-hand post in the 54th minute.

Ireland continued to turn up the pressure on their Austrian opponents. Daryl Murphy was introduced and after he won the ball back 40 yards from goal, McClean picked up the ball, turned inside but fired narrowly wide in the 63rd minute.

Wes Hoolahan was also introduced and almost created Ireland’s equaliser when he crossed from the right and Austrian full-back Stefan Lainer almost turned the ball into his own net but the keeper was alert with 20 minutes remaining.

Long had a header cleared off the line and McClean blasted wide five minutes before Ireland finally got the equaliser they deserved. Austrian centre-back Aleksander Dragovic let a long ball bounce and Walters beat him to the ball to produce a fine finish into the bottom corner with six minutes remaining.

Ireland piled forward in search of a late winner and they had the ball in the net again when Murphy’s header from a right-sided corner was blocked and the ball looped into the air to be turned home by Duffy but the referee awarded Austria a free-kick.

Kennedy Cup general.jpg

Sixteen games took place at the Shannonside location - with some excellent sixty-minute clashes on display.

Last year's winners and perennial big-hitters, the Dublin and District Schoolboy League (DDSL) got off to the best possible start with a comfortable win over Clare.

First half goals from Malahide United's Val Abeedokun and St Joseph's Boys' Darragh Lynch put the result beyond doubt before St Kevin's Boys' Gavin O'Brien added the gloss in a three-nil victory for Garreth Dodrill's charges.

Last year's beaten finalists, Galway Schoolboy League, made a statement of intent as they defeated the WWEC by five goals to one.

It was a mixed day for the host county as the three Limerick sides had differing results.

The LDSL fell to a two-one defeat at the hands of the Athlone District Schoolboy/girl's League. The Limerick County side were beaten well by Wexford, while the Limerick Desmond League selection beat Carlow by two goals to nil.

Kerry and Drogheda stole the opening day, however - a clash that saw Ken Robinson's side beat the Boynesiders by five goals to two.

Eight sides qualified for the quarter finals as thirty-two games were played at the Castletroy facility.

In Group One, Limerick Desmond progressed into the final eight despite a defeat to the Midlands outfit.

Athlone and Kildare will also be represented in the quarter-finals after securing impressive wins against Wexford and Cavan-Monaghan respectively.

Tomorrow’s quarter finals will see the DDSL face Athlone, the NDSL versus Sligo-Leitrim, Kildare battle Galway and Limerick Desmond tackle Cork.

Tournament favourites Dublin and District Schoolboy League (DDSL) once again showed that they're a force to be reckoned with, as they steamrolled Athlone in a technical bout.

They've yet to concede a goal, and with the pace and power of Val Adeedokun, they will prove tough to beat. Adeedokun netted a brace while Nathan Anyanwu and Darragh Lynch also found the net.

Cork ended local representation in the Cup as they knocked out Limerick Desmond. Rob Walsh opened the scoring for the Leesiders before Castleview's Alan Nagle sealed their berth.

In somewhat of an upset, Sligo-Leitrim knocked out the NDFL in a cracking last eight tie. Dylan Walsh opened the scoring before Michael Lavin sealed it with a second half strike.

The day may have belonged to Galway, however. After snatching a late equaliser, Kevin Cassidy's charges won the ensuing penalty shootout in dramatic fashion.

Mervue United's James Egan saved two Kildare penalties before slotting the winning spot kick himself into the bottom corner.

Sligo-Leitrim progressed to a Connacht derby in the final four - they face off with Galway at 3pm, while the DDSL battle Cork two hours later.

15-6-17 Kennedy Cup Semi Finals_8 .jpg

After a dramatic shootout success on Wednesday that saw their goalkeeper save two spot-kicks before converting the winner, Galway fell short in their second game of twelve-yard roulette.

Galway took the lead early in the second half through an own goal but Sligo-Leitrim roared back through Kailan Barlow of Merville United.

Going into sudden death spot-kicks, Sligo-Leitrim held their nerve and booked a place in Friday's final.

The DDSL entertained Cork in the other semi-final - a matchup that saw two heavyweights cancel each other out in the opening half.

However, Belvedere's Ben McCormack and St Joseph's Boys' Darragh Lynch put the game beyond the Leesiders with two second half goals.

The DDSL have yet to concede a goal in the competition and will be strong favourites to grab their 31st Kennedy Cup title.

Tomorrow's final kicks off at 2pm.

The Science of Football

GPS.jpg

There are many ways in which science currently plays a role in the game, e.g. GPS analysis (as evidenced above by Sean McCullagh who is showing Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill how he tracks players' performances).

Yet, there are so many avenues that have not been explored and that is why we have set the challenge for kids between the ages of 8 and 14 years old to come up with a new idea that fuses science and football together.

Whether it is a way of gauging concussion, or aiding a referee, or simply helping a player to score more goals, we want to hear all about your ideas.

SPAR launch Players' Healthy Eating Guide

HealthyEating.jpg

Eating healthier food helps children to concentrate for longer and learn more in school. It also supplies children with the energy they need to perform at their best at sport. Making smarter food choices as children will help them to grow up to become healthier teenagers and adults.

Players from the Republic of Ireland Men's and Women's Senior Teams got involved to help out, as evidenced by the photo above of Jonathan Walters, Paul McShane and Jeff Hendrick trying out some of the meals at the team hotel.

Dan Horan, FAI Head of Fitness, works closely with the Ireland Men's and Women's Senior Teams, so he knows all about getting players into peak condition to perform on the pitch. Dan is one of the experts in this Guide, alongside Mark Evans and Ellen Roche, who are highly-skilled and qualified nutritionists and dietitians who have helped to supply a great range of healthy breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack options.

Another important person involved in this Guide is David Steele, who is the Head Chef for the Ireland teams, and he prepared each of the amazing looking dishes featured in this Guide. He also helped provide the list of ingredients needed and cooking methods required to prepare the meals.

Also included in the Guide are healthy school lunch ideas, healthy eating tips and full list of foods which will help children to create a balance diet.

Improving match day for children with autism

AustismMatch.jpg

By working closely with the Irish Society for Autism, we have created a unique match day checklist that allows young supporters with autism to follow a structured routine and have fun doing so.

Kids with autism tend to like following routines, so this checklist gives them the opportunity to catalogue every bit of their experience from when they arrive in the Aviva Stadium until when they depart.

We have also catered for kids with autism who get uncomfortable amongst large crowds and overwhelmed by big noises by providing a corporate box for a number of families for the 'Three' International Friendly against Iceland in June - free of charge.

Over the coming months we plan on rolling out more inititatives to help make the match day experience for kids with autism as safe and enjoyable as possible.

Below is the match day checklist...
