SFAI Umbro Kennedy Cup: DDSL retain title

DDSL win Kennedy Cup 2017.jpg

Two first half goals sealed the result, arriving via the boot of Roland Banya and an unfortunate own goal. Despite the fight back in the second period, the brilliant backline of Garreth Dodrill's charges stood firm.
Having yet to concede a goal in the tournament, DDSL were heavy favourites going into this tie and they went a goal ahead after just four minutes.
The dangerous Val Adeedokun looked up to see the Sligo-Leitrim defence tuck in, before delivering a clever cross-field switch into the path of right winger Roland Banya.
The tricky number six took a touch inside onto his left boot and fired a curling effort from the edge of the eighteen yard box. Sligo-Leitrim 'keeper Kayle Wasjszczuk almost kept the shot out, but it found its way into the bottom corner.
Just as the clock was ticking towards half time, the DDSL won a corner. The delivery wasn't cleared properly and found its way to the feet of Belvedere's Ben McCormack.
The midfielder aimed to cross into the far post, but a deflection off the boot of a Sligo-Leitrim defender directed it back across Wasjszczuk.
Led by the brilliant William Chelaru, DDSL kept another clean sheet - ensuring the Dublin outfit maintained a perfect defensive record over the five days.
DDSL: Morgan Rice (Crumlin Utd); Gavin O'Brien (St. Kevin's Boys), William Chelaru (Cherry Orchard), Adam Wells (Crumlin Utd), Len O'Sullivan (St. Kevin's Boys); Bosun Lawal (St. Kevin's Boys), Jeff Nwodo (Malahide Utd); Roland Banya (St. Kevin's Boys), Ben McCormack (Belvedere), Val Adeedokun (Malahide Utd); Conan Noonan (St. Kevin's Boys).

Republic of Ireland winger James McClean joins Jarlath Regan for a fascinating conversation about the highs and lows of football and his thoughts on the modern game. James discusses how football has become a softer sport (10:00), why the life of a footballer is far from a life of luxury (12:00) and how the Irish team need to be ruthless to make it to the World Cup (45:00).

From giving grief to Séamus Coleman to lighten the mood after breaking his leg (29:00), to his aspiration of finishing his career at Derry City FC (37:00), how he very nearly signed for New York Red Bulls (34:00), and why he says that being booed is ‘kind of great’ (15:00), this episode is a fascinating insight into one of Ireland's greatest footballers.

Offaly County Council.png

The announcement in Tullamore this afternoon, at a meeting of Offaly County Council, means that the Football Association of Ireland now has at least one Football Development Officer in every county in the Republic of Ireland. The Offaly Football Development Officer adds to the 52 other Football Development Officers implementing football in the community programmes across the country.

Speaking at the announcement, which was attended by Republic of Ireland Manager Martin O’Neill, FAI CEO John Delaney welcomed the partnership. “I would like to thank everyone involved at Offaly County Council as we embark on this exciting partnership. Offaly has a tremendous sporting pedigree and the new Football Development Officer will further enhance the game at all levels in the county.”

The Football Development Officer will have more than 20 different FAI participation programmes to select from, geared towards different target groups, to allow as many people as possible the opportunity to participate in football at their level.  These range from club, league and schools programmes to education, women’s football, Football for All and Player Development Programmes, as well as a large range of social inclusion initiatives.

The Football Development Officer will liaise with Offaly County Council to identify community partners and groups to work with, so that these programmes can be effective in reaching and engaging with target groups.

The recruitment process for the Football Development Officer will go live on the FAI careers website from tomorrow, with the successful candidate due to commence in August.  Applications are welcome through this process.

Garda Diversion Project Challenge Match Takes Place

Both groups are part of Garda Diversion Projects and have played football within their ‘Youth Club’ throughout the year. As the groups come to the end of their time within the ‘clubs’ as most turn 18, there was a discussion held around having a challenge match between them. To make it impactful local Gardai also took part in the game as it would be a way to allow them to build a relationship with the young people and allow the young people to see the guards in a more positive light.

In total, 35 teenage boys took part as well as eight members of An Garda Siochana from Ronanstown. The game drew a huge crowd with the mood throughout being nothing but positive. Ronanstown Youth Service put a wonderful spread of food on for the everyone which was greatly appreciated by players and supporters.

As this was the first of its kind the FAI certainly feel it is something we could do annually to end the groups’ Garda Diversion Projects. Seeing the young people engage with the Gardai in a very social environment was brilliant and allowed all involved an opportunity learn about each other.

Powerchair squad named for World Cup

Power chair

Team Ireland departs Dublin on June 27th and July 1st to participate in the third FIPFA (Fédération Internationale de Powerchair Football) World Cup, which takes place in the Silver Spurs Arena, Kissimmee, Florida from July 5th-9th 2017.

Whilst Ireland competed on invitation in the World Cup in 2011, this is the first time the Irish team has had to qualify for the World Cup, and follows on from the squad’s participation in the European Championships which were hosted in Limerick in 2014. Nine players will travel to Kissimmee, along with a team of carers, coaches and back-up staff. Ireland will compete alongside Argentina, Australia, Canada, Denmark, England, France, Japan, Uruguay, and the United States at the event, which was first held in 2007.

Drawn in Pool B, Ireland will take on England and France on Thursday 6th July, followed by Australia and Canada on Friday 7th July. The full schedule of games can be viewed here.

POWERCHAIR FOOTBALL

Powerchair football has existed since the 1970s in some form or another, but it was not until 2005 that representatives from France, the United States, Canada, Japan, England and Portugal met in Paris to discuss formalising the sport and develop a set of international rules. This led to the establishment of the Federation Internationale De Football Association (FIPFA), and the first World Cup took place two years later.

The Association of Irish Powerchair Football was established in 2008 and oversees the growth and development of the sport in Ireland, in partnership with the Football Association of Ireland and Muscular Dystrophy Ireland.

Powerchair football is played indoors between teams of four players. Players use customised motorised sports powerchairs to move a size 10 football around the court. Players are classified based on level of impairment, and a classification process will take place prior to the first games. There are two grades of classification - PF1 and PF2, PF1 being the more challenging in terms of neck movement or hand control. Teams must have two PF1s on court at all times.

In the final game of the tournament, Metropolitan Girls League claimed a 1-0 win over Galway and District League thanks to a first-half penalty from Alannah McEvoy. McEvoy, who starred for the Republic of Ireland WU17 side at the European Championships, ensured her side lifted the trophy, presented to them by Republic of Ireland WNT Head Coach Colin Bell.

In the U14 Final, Galway and District League triumphed in an all-Connacht affair against Sligo Leitrim and District League. In an enthralling final between two unbeaten sides, Orlaith Conlon scored the winning goal after great work by Anna Fahey. Galway were presented with the trophy by FAI CEO John Delaney as Galway reached the final in all three age-groups (U12, U14, U16).

Limerick Desmond walked away with third place in the U16 Cup after a narrow 1-0 win over Cork. Metropolitan Girls League claimed third place in the U14 Cup after a narrow 1-0 win over Inishowen League which means Metropolitan finished in the top three in all three age-groups, winning two.

The two finals wrapped up the four-day tournament which has seen over 45 teams compete and over 1,000 girls participate in the Fota Island Resort Gaynor Tournament at the University of Limerick.

Bobby Smith Cup: Clondalkin & Carrigaline meet in final

FAI ETB Final.jpg

Clondalkin head coach Harry Kenny will look for the Dublin outfit to make home advantage tell against their counterparts from Cork, who are led by former Cork City star Mick Conroy.

The FAI in partnership with a number of Education and Training Boards throughout the country and supported by the European Social Fund operates Local Training Initiatives that provide a unique blend of educational and football development for talented young footballers. Bobby Smith had many years involvement in the ETB centres.

Mick Conroy is expecting a tough test in Bray but believes his players have shown their qualities this year.

“We’ve two from Cobh Ramblers - Charlie Fleming and Ben O’Riordan RCB - and Cabinteely’s Evan Galvin in our squad. They’ve shown themselves to be good young players with a bit to learn but they’re in good environments to learn both at their clubs and in the centre,” he explained.

“We hope we can do ourselves justice tomorrow. Our squad isn’t as strong as it was throughout the qualifying process for a number of reasons. We’ve one or two injured plus we lost two or three players who secured full-time employment.

“We had a draw against Limerick in the group stages then beat the other two sides in Cork then the decider in the group was up in Limerick and that was probably out best performance of the season as we won 3-1. We played Cabra in the semi-final and progressed to the final for the second time.

“We didn’t play as well as we could last time but these players have worked hard to get to here. We’ll enjoy the experience.

“We’ve seen their progression over the year. The three SSE Airtricity League players have certainly improved individually and as part of their units. I’m happy with how we’ve developed.

“Eric Grimes and Corey Galvin aren’t available to us anymore but that’s what happens with these courses. Adam O’Sullivan from Cork City U19s has had a good season and is close to making his debut with John Caulfield’s side.

“I’m expecting a tough game. Clondalkin beat Limerick in the semi-finals and it was a tight game I understand so I expect a similar situation tomorrow. It’s good for the boys to get to a final. It keeps the interest there for those who aren’t playing League level.”

Clondalkin boss Harry Kenny has a squad made up of mostly junior and intermediate players with Shelbourne U19s defender Dean Longhi their best known player.

“We’re delighted with how they’ve done. They may be players from the junior ranks but they’ve good morale and they love their football,” he said.

“We’ve four girls - Roma McLaughlin, Niamh Prior, Chloe Maloney and Amanda McQuillan - on the course too and they add to the atmosphere in the group. They’ll be there cheering the lads on tomorrow.

“Eoin Devereux has got goals for us. He’s quick. He plays for Sacred Heart. Claudio Da Silva is a Portugusee player who is training with Athlone Town at the moment and he’s done well.

“We finished second in the group to Cabra then we beat Limerick 1-0 down there in the semi-final so we were thrilled with that.

“I’d say it’ll be first time in a National League ground for some of them. They’ll love the occasion.

“You can see how much they’ve developed over the year, technically and tactically. They are working away every day. Thomas Heffernan was the coach and he moved on to become a Development Office and Jason McGuinness has been great with them since he came on board.”

Kenny has also been very pleased with how his course participants have performed in the classroom as well as on the pitch.

“We got 19 FETAC Major awards which was a great achievement. They’re looking to go on to IT level now. They’ve been a great group on and off the pitch,” he added.

WNT: Stephanie Roche ruled out of Scotland trip

The 28-year old forward suffered a hamstring injury in the final Women's Super League fixture of the season for Sunderland and missed the international friendly against Iceland on June 8th.

Roche has been working with the FAI medical staff to overcome the hamstring injury but despite making progress with the injury, she has been ruled out of the Scotland trip.

WNT Head Coach Colin Bell said: "On the advice of the medical staff, we've decided not to risk Stephanie for the trip to Scotland next week.

"Stephanie has worked really hard in her bid to recover from the injury. We don't want to take the risk of bringing her back too soon and aggrevating the injury further.

"She is a hugely important player for us as her recent goals record suggests and we will need her to be fit and available for the start of the 2019 World Cup qualification campaign in September.

"She will continue with her rehabilitation with the FAI medical staff ahead of the trip to Northern Ireland on September 19th."

There will be no replacement called up with WNT Head Coach Colin Bell set to travel to Scotland with a 20-player squad for the game on Friday, July 7th, with kick-off at 7.30pm.

Clondalkin 0-2 ETB Carrigaline

Mick Conroy's Cork outfit had most of possession in the first half in a very entertaining game but failed to break down a very resolute 'home' defence which was well-marshalled by Dolapo Lawal. Cal Sheehy opened the scoring mid way through first half.

Clondalkin created the better opportunities as Sam Afolabi went close after a right wing pull back from Glen Fullam and Eoin Devereux got in on goal a few times but failed to hit the target.

The game was more even in the second half with Clondalkin's Leon Foley's long range free-kick being well saved by the Carrigaline goalkeeper.

Claudio Silva was very prominent for Clondalkin in the middle of the pitch and sent Dean Longhi away on the left hand side on a few occasions.

Substitute Ryan McCarthy side-footed home a corner from Graham Bogue in the final minute to wrap up the victory for Carrigaline.

Man of match for the winners was Ben O'Riordan at the heart of the defence with Evan Galvin also putting in a top display in midfield.

UEFA Regions Cup: Irish side set for Russian test

Gerry Davis's side will face into stifling conditions at Sarıyer Yusuf Ziya Öniş Stadyumu as temperatures have been over 30C degrees all week.

"We've had a good week and the conditions are an obvious challenge. It's still very hot every day. It was 37C degrees coming home from training today. That's hot even for Istanbul," said Davis.

"We've managed it quite well and put huge emphasis on hydration and recovery. Players have taken that information on board and we feel that they are adapting well to the conditions.

"Playing in the heat creates a different challenge than a normal game for us. So game management will be vitally important. We've certainly impressed it upon the players. It's not a normal scenario."

Davis and the Irish coaching staff have done their analysis on the Russians and the Irish coach anticipates a tough opener in Group B regardless of the heat.

"We've managed to get two videos from the Russian side's qualifying games. They came through a very tough group where three teams ended up on five points," said Davis.

"They are a well-organised outfit and dangerous from set-pieces. We'll be prepared for that. They're very attack-minded and maybe more direct than you'd expect from a continental team.

"We're more focused on how our players perform. It's a new experience for most of the game and we've been pleased with how the likes of David Stack, Chris Smith and the new faces have settled in. They've done really well in training. Everybody in the group has bought into what we're doing.

"There's good unity in the group and we'll be as prepared as possible. It's up to us to go out and perform now."

UEFA Regions' Cup: Hayes secures opening victory

Made up of players from Connacht Munster, the team are known officially by UEFA as Region 2 but head coach Gerry Davis (pictured above) knew that Irish pride was on the line in their opening match of this year's finals tournament.

Newmarket Celtic attacker Hayes pounced on 26 minutes to break the deadlock and there was no way back from there for the opposition despite fighting right to the end to find an equaliser.

Goalkeeper Brendan O'Connell was on high alert throughout, although his confidence in the players in front of him was justified as the Irish side attempted to play on the front foot and push their opponents back inside their own half at every opportunity.

In what was an all-action first period, David Hoban and David Stack went close with efforts, while Hayes had a number of chances before he eventually found the back of the net.

South Region responded by making an early substitution and adopting a more adventurous approach. They had opportunities to pull one back but the Irish defence stood strong and kept them at bay.

The victory puts Davis's team joint top of Group B - Castilla y Leon won 4-1 against Olomouc in the other game - ahead of Monday's showdown with their Spanish counterparts.

Passage through to the final remains on track as Davis aims to guide his team all the way to glory - just like in 2015 when Gerry Smith's outfit triumphed on home soil.

Region 2: B O'Connell; Hoey, Horgan, Kelly, Higgins; Carr (Daly-Butz 65), Joyce, O'Donovan, Stack; Hayes (K O'Connell 83), Hoban (Murphy 75).

South Region: Lyashenko; Voroskalevski (Devadze 30), Serov, Tishchenko, Kartashov; Donskov, Mochkarski, Khodzhumyan, Sanko (Valiulin 70); Obernibesov (Nastavshev 64), Lednev.

Referee: Dimitar Meckarovski (MKD).

UEFA Regions Cup: Irish seek to top group with Spanish win

Gerry Davis talking.jpg

Gerry Davis’s Irish side, Region 2, beat Russias South Region 1-0 on Saturday thanks to a first half goal from Eoin Hayes.

Castilla y León are the Spanish representatives and they won 4-1 against Olomouc from Czech Republic yesterday so the meeting in Maltepe near Istanbul (1.00pm) could have a major bearing on who wins the group.

The winners of each group will meet in the finals. If there is no winner in the other game in the group which sees South Region clash with Olomouc, then the winners of encounter between the Irish and Spanish sides could not be denied top spot in the group.

Davis was very pleased with how his side performed against the Russians in extremely hot conditions on Saturday.

“I was absolutely delighted with the performance. It was a really tough game. We were under the cosh for a long time,” he said.

“They had a lot of possession but we didn’t have a lot of shots to save. Our back four were magnificent, the midfield and front two worked very hard. It was a really good performance.

“It was around 34C degrees when we got to the stadium and there was a water break in each half which showed how warm it was. We had to dig deep so I’m really pleased.

“The goal from Eoin Hayes was a real finisher’s goal. We may have had one or two other opportunities which we passed up with different decisions but you can’t be too hard on anybody.

“We’ve looked at the videos of the Spanish and have a game plan for Monday. That’s a massive game for us now.”
