After spending seven years at Aviva Ireland, as Group Sponsorship Manager, Mark has decided to take on the challenge of leading the FAI's Commercial Department at an exciting time for Irish football.

Mark is no stranger to Irish football having led Aviva's award-winning sponsorship campaigns with the FAI that have boosted participation numbers in women's football through the support of the Soccer Sisters programme and the Republic of Ireland Women's Senior Team.

With a background in marketing and business development, Mark brings a lot to the Association and he is looking forward to getting started in June 2018.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be joining the FAI at this exciting time. With the UEFA 2020 European Championships and the FAI Centenary on the horizon, it feels like the beginning of a historic chapter in the life of the Association," said Russell.

The development of women's football in Ireland has been given a huge boost with the unveiling of Castleknock Hotel as the primary sponsor of the Football Association of Ireland's Girls Centre of Excellence Programme.

The recently refurbished Castleknock Hotel, which boasts 190 rooms along with a purpose-built spa, hosts both the Republic of Ireland Men's and Women's Senior teams ahead of crucial home games to provide everything that they require.

Now, Castleknock Hotel are further extending their partnership with the FAI by supporting the Girls Centre of Excellence Programme, which has regional centres around the country and provides girls with the opportunity to receive professional coaching to hone their technical skills.

"It is fantastic to have Castleknock Hotel onboard to sponsor a really worthwhile programme that helps develop female players from an early age right through to elite level," said FAI CEO John Delaney.

"When you see that graduates of the Programme include Republic of Ireland Women's Senior internationals like Katie McCabe, Denise O'Sullivan, Megan Connolly and Amber Barrett, then it is clear how vital it is to the overall development of women's football."

Guy Thompson, General Manager, Castleknock Hotel, said: "We are delighted to be supporting the FAI's Girls Centre of Excellence Programme. We are very proud to host both the Men's and Women's Senior International teams and be involved with the development of women's football."

The Girls Centre of Excellence are part of the Elite Player Pathway for female players and are run by Ireland Women's Under-19 Head Coach and Head of Women's Underage Development Dave Connell, along with a skilled and experienced set of coaches.

Girls Centre of Excellence providing clear pathway

There was genuine excitement in FAI HQ this week when Castleknock Hotel were unveiled as the primary sponsor of the Girls Centre of Excellence because it allowed the spotlight to shine on one of the country's most essential programmes.

Boosting participation numbers in women's football has been a target for the Football Association of Ireland for some time - it is part of the FAI 2016-2020 Strategy - and progress has been made through the likes of Aviva Soccer Sisters, Fota Island Resort Gaynor Cup, FIFA Live Your Goals, and SportsDirect FAI Summer Soccer Schools programmes.

However, it is the Girls Centre of Excellence - previously known as the Emerging Talent Programme - that has been able to provide a clear pathway for elite players at Under 12, U-14 & U-16 level with eight different centres located around the country.

Dave Connell, FAI Head of Women's Underage Development, explained that the work being done to help players hone their technical skills is paying off with more girls going on to represent Ireland and compete in the Continental Tyres Women's National League.

"The Girls Centre of Excellence caters for approximately 500 girls in various locations. The girls take part in training sessions, delivered by top class coaches, once a week on a 14-week programme running from July through to September," said Connell.

"We also select certain players to take part in special training sessions at the FAI National Training Centre, while there are 10 one-day goalkeeping training camps for the best goalkeepers from the three different age groups.

"A lot of the current Republic of Ireland Women's Senior players came through the centres, so it is a credit to the programme - along with the players' own talent & dedication - that their development was given the sufficient coaching that it required and they are now benefitting from that.

"Almost every player in our most recent Under-15 Schools, U-16, U-17 and U-19 women's squads have been part of the centres and that is a massive endorsement for the work being done all around the country by our coaches to develop elite level players."

FAI CEO John Delaney, who attended the launch of the sponsorship announcement with Castleknock Hotel, is enthused by the progress being made in the centres and that it is now transferring over to the international scene with more girls rising up to the level required.

Greenwood_2018.jpg

A hat-trick apiece from Darragh O’Connor and Ethan Varian was enough to see Greenwood secure the National Cup with a scintillating attacking display.

But it was Corduff who made the better start and they almost took the lead within the opening seconds. But after being sent through on goal by James Sheridan, winger Sean Enright clipped the ball wide of the far top left corner.

The Dublin club did take the lead after just two minutes as Adam Muhall expertly hooked his volley over the keeper and into the far top left corner from just inside the box.

Greenwood responded well to that set-back and they duly equalised after eight minutes when Darragh O’Connor drilled Aaron Walsh’s pullback into the roof of the net.

The frantic start continued as the Cork side completed the turnaround after just 10 minutes when Cathal Crowley fired the rebound home from a few yards after Ethan Varian’s initial effort was saved by keeper Eugene Prodanchuk.

But back came Corduff and they levelled terms just shy of the half-hour mark when Sean Enright slotted Adam Mulhall's square ball past the helpless goalkeeper.

The match continued to swing from end to end as Greenwood retook the lead thanks to Aaron Walsh only for Corduff to make it 3-3 before the break when Jake McGarry found the net.

But the second period was all about Greenwood as Darragh O’Connor again edged Greenwood in front in the 50th minute before doubling their lead and completing his hat-trick in the process with a fine finish four minutes later.

Ethan Varian deservedly added his name to the scoresheet just a minute later to net his side's sixth of the afternoon.

And the talented forward completed the scoring as he made it seven with 20 minutes remaining, finishing well when through on goal before sealing his own match ball from the penalty spot late on.

Tramore opened the scoring on eight minutes when Daniel Olasumbo headed home a left-wing Darragh Wall cross before the Seagulls doubled their lead on 23 minutes. Olasumbo cracked in a shot from the edge of the penalty area that was parried by keeper Yoro Godfrey and it was Wall that touched home the rebound.

St. Kevin’s Boys came storming back into the tie and were level by the 38th minute after scoring twice in the space of seven minutes. The first goal came when Tramore keeper Dan Morrissey cleared the ball straight to Lee Kelly and he powered an unstoppable left-footed effort to the roof of the net from 25-yards.

The equaliser arrived with a stunning goal when captain John Barry intercepted another loose clearance from the seaside defence and he gave Morrisey no chance as his unbelievable left-footed strike flew into the top corner of the net.

Lee Kelly was gifted his second goal of the tie on the hour mark as his side took the lead for the first time in the game as Dan Morrisey fumbled his left-wing cross over the line before the saints were reduced to ten men on 75 minutes after Tuluwalade Bello was red carded for a second yellow game after impeding a Morrissey clearance.

Tramore were level on 87 minutes when Kieran Sadey sent in a deep cross from the left that was knocked down by Niall Long into the path of Lee Kavanagh and his simply sublime finish beat Yoro Godfrey with the aid of the left-upright.

The winner came for the Waterford side in the final minute of the first period of extra-time when Kavanagh’s right-wing flag kick was headed back across goal by Darragh Wall for Josh Douglas and he planted a close-range header to the net for a goal that saw Tramore crowned champions.

After the game, FAI President Tony Fitzgerald presented the Cup to captain Tom Carney, who was also named as the man of the match after a sparkling performance of leadership at the heart of the defence.

Tramore AFC: Dan Morrissey, Josh Douglas, Michael Brennan (Luke O’Neill 91), Tom Carney, Ben Flynn, Favour Eddy (Mohammed Alala 108), Conor Butler (Niall Long 79), Lee Kavanagh, Darragh Wall, Kieran Sadey (Eoin Hayes 110), Daniel Olasumbo (Luke Kervick 79).

Summer Soccer Schools

It's easy to see why the senior men's and women's managers are endorsing the fun-filled camps as they provide the perfect platform to introduce children to football and help them to develop their skills.

For the last three years, the programme has gone from strength to strength with over 35,000 children involved in 2017. However, this promises to be the biggest year yet with more camps being held around the country than ever before.

The camps, which are priced at €65, with discounts available for siblings and multiple camp bookings, are aimed at children between the ages of 6 to 14. The week-long camps come with a high standard of coaching and care from Garda-vetted FAI qualified coaches and it all starts on July 2.

Leonard Brassel, Managing Director of Sports Direct Ireland said: “We are proud to partner again with the FAI Summer Soccer Schools for the 4th year in a row.

"Since the partnership Soccer School numbers have increased by 35%. It has been an amazing journey to see the growth of the Soccer Schools throughout the country and the commitment to grassroots football.

"While participants will learn new skills and tricks, the most important element of our Soccer Schools is that they are fun and that all children enjoy them.

"For us as a business our football category continues to grow offering parents big brands, quality and value across clothing, footwear and accessories. With 35,000 children taking part in Soccer Schools we are hugely proud to be part of that journey”.

Ireland manager Martin O'Neill said: "The work that the FAI have been doing at grassroots level in recent years is simply fantastic. I've visited the Sports Direct FAI Summer Soccer Schools camps in each of my four years in charge with Ireland and I always enjoy seeing the impact that they make on communities. It is a credit to Sports Direct, the FAI and the coaches that they make the camps so enjoyable for children while also helping them to develop their skills."

Ireland WNT manager Colin Bell echoed those sentiments by saying: "It is fantastic to see so much emphasis being put on a programme that helps develop our star players of the future. Ultimately, it's about children having fun and enjoying the camps. If they do that then hopefully they will stay involved in the game and keep football in their life, which will help keep them fit, active, making new friends and taking on different challenges."

The good news for this year's participants is that the SportsDirect FAI Summer Soccer Schools kit, football, backpack and certificate are included with every booking and there is also a 20% discount off all Sports Direct clothing, footwear and accessories in store.

As part of the link-up between Sports Direct and the FAI, there has been an annual donation made to Temple Street Children's Hospital with over €100,000 handed over this year.

Inishowen schools dominant in Ulster SPAR Primary 5s

Spar5s.jpeg

The event saw 31,728 children participate this year. The competition has been running since the mid 1990’s, the event is more popular than ever with an impressive 1,528 schools involved in 2018.

The competition is run across six divisions, ensuring that schools of all sizes are catered for. Boys and girls are encouraged to play together but there is a separate competition for boys and girls dependent on school enrolment numbers.

This year saw 4 Inishowen schools make the cut as well as qualifiers from Donegal and Monaghan. Flying the flag for Inishowen in the Aviva will be St. Oran’s NS, Cockhill, Scoil Iosagain, Buncrana, St. Brigid’s NS, Glenmakee and Scoil Iosagain, Buncrana. Alongside them representing Ulster will be our Donegal Champions, Scoil Chroine, Dungloe and Monaghan Champions, Latnamard NS.

SPAR ‘A’ Cup (Small Schools, boys/mixed teams)

Winners Latnamard NS finished their provincial campaign with a 100% record with two clean sheets to boot. Key player Eanna Carolan got the Monaghan side off to a flyer against St. Patrick’s NS, Castletara, Cavan, as he scored two goals in the 3-0 victory. He was also on the scoresheet again in the crunch game against Donegal side Scoil Phadraig Dobhair with Cian Greenan scoring two in the 3-2 victory against the scholars from the North West.

Based on the head-to-head, victory was assured for Latnamard NS going into the final game, but they did not relent and signed off in style with a 6-0 victory against St. Boden’s NS, Culdaff, Inishowen with Greenan getting a hat-trick and Carolan a brace as both players completed their tallies at five goals apiece. Scoil Phadraig Dobhair would pip St. Patrick’s NS, Castletara to the runners-up spot in the final game with a 2-1 victory, thanks in part to goals from James Ó Baoill and Crónán Mac Pháidín.

SPAR ‘B’ Cup (Medium Schools, boys/mixed teams)

The ‘B’ competition went right down to the final whistle as St. Oran’s NS, Cockhill, Buncrana from Inishowen took the fortune of the head-to-head tiebreaker to come out on top. In retrospect, the crucial game was in fact the opening tie between St. Oran’s NS and eventual runners-up Scoil Rois, Carrickmacross, Monaghan. In a tightly contested game, the youngsters from Carrickmacross were the superior side in the first half with Maitiú Ó Cearbhalláin on the scoresheet. St. Oran’s NS showed resilience however and fought back with Luke O’Donnell and Kai Bardini scoring the deciding goals. The Inishowen side would hit a stumbling block in their second game in the shape of Donegal rivals SN Fhionnain An Falcarrach who defeated them 6-2 with Tiernan McGinty the star player scoring five of the six goals.

Including Killygarry NS, Cavan, all four schools were level heading into the final game. St. Oran’s dealt their case for a place in the National Finals with a 3-1 win over Killygarry NS with Bardini, O’Donnell and PJ Doherty all scoring. Based on that result SN Fhionnain An Falcarrach only required victory in their last game to overtake their Inishowen rivals. However, a double from Niall Ó Miacháin and efforts from Roibéard Mac Camhaoill and Déaglán Ó Loingsigh gave Scoil Rois the points in a 4-0 victory and ensured they finished as runners-up and surprisingly SN Fhionnain An Falcarrach finishing bottom of the group as they were defeated 3-1 in their opening game by Killygarry NS.

SPAR ‘C’ Cup (Large Schools, boys/mixed teams)

In a group that entertained onlookers with high tempo play, filled with great demonstrations of technical ability, it was Scoil Iosagain, Buncrana of Inishowen who prevailed with three victories from three games on the day. In an opening game where neither side were short of confidence for shooting from all angles, a double from Danny McDaid and a single effort from Ciaran McIlroy delivered a 3-1 victory for Scoil Iosagain despite Jack McArdle’s goal for St. Mary’s BNS, Monaghan Town.

Passage to the National Finals was assured in their second game when the talented McDaid scored a hat trick along the way to a 6-3 victory over eventual runners up, St. Felim’s NS, Cavan Town. There was no stopping the Inishowen schools momentum going into the final game where McDaid made it six goals for the day along with Daire McColgan’s strike in the 2-0 victory over St. Patrick’s NS, Lurgybrack. St. Felim’s NS would seize the runners-up spot with a 4-2 defeat of St. Mary’s Boys NS, who ended the day in third position.

SPAR Girls ‘A’ Cup (Small Schools, girls only)

There was a small surprise as previous finalists Scoil Mhuire Caiseal were knocked out by the scintillating St. Brigid’s NS, Glenmakee, Carndonagh of Inishowen, who will have to be feared on May 30 in the Aviva Stadium as they ripped apart the opposition. They made light work of their counterparts from Latnamard NS, Monaghan with an 8-0 win in the opening round. A hat-trick from Seaneen Crumlish was the highlight for St. Brigid’s, with Ellie Long hitting a double and individual efforts from Ailish Doherty, Imogen Diver and Erin Grant capping off a fine display. Long would take centre stage in the next two games, as she would score four past Ballynarry NS, Ballyheelan, Kilnaleck, Cavan in a 6-2 victory, and five past Scoil Mhuire Caiseal in a 7-1 victory to complete the day.

Scoil Mhuire Caiseal were assured of a runners-up spot beforehand as they defeated Ballynarry NS 3-2 and Latnamard NS 5-2 with Clodagh Ní Thiaróin scoring five across both games. Ballynarry NS would fill the third spot in the group with a 6-0 win over Latnamard NS with Sarah McSherry scoring six goals across the day.

SPAR Girls ‘B’ Cup  (Medium Schools, girls only)

It was victory for Donegal as Scoil Chroine, Dungloe overcame the challenges presented to them and claimed the Ulster title. In their opening encounter with Cavan side Farnham NS, it took the brilliance of Ellie McGravy to separate the sides as her double downed the Cavan team 3-1. Leigha Ní Ghrianna would step up in their second game as she got all three goals in the 3-0 win over the Monaghan outfit Annyalla NS. Following the 1-1 draw between Clonmany NS of Inishowen and Farnham NS in the second round of games, destiny lay in the hands of Scoil Chroine as any result in the final showdown with Clonmany NS would see them safely through. As it turned out, that game would finish 0-0 and with Annyalla NS defeating Farnham NS 3-2 in their final game, Clonmany NS were destined for second place with Annyalla NS taking third.

SPAR Girls ‘C’ Cup (Large Schools, girls only)

All roads from Buncrana will be leading to the Aviva Stadium on May 30 as Scoil Iosagain, Buncrana of Inishowen will join their boys team in the National Finals having secured double Cup success. In an exciting opening game against Scoil Naoimh Fiachra, Illistrin, all of the action occurred in the opening period as Ciara McGee and Jodie Loughrey got the crucial goals for Scoil Iosagain with Erika Gallagher keeping Illistrin within touching distance but finished the game with no reward. The second game was just as entertaining, albeit perhaps not for the opposition, St. Clare’s NS, Cavan as Scoil Iosagain would run out 9-2 winners with Heidi Gill getting a hat-trick.

Needing to avoid a catastrophe in their final game, the Inishowen crew made tough work of seeing off Bunscoil Lughaird Naofa, Carrickmacross, Monaghan and needed an inspired performance from Keri Loughrey to run out 3-2 winners. Scoil Naoimh Fiachra, Illistrin would rally from their opening defeat to take second with goals from Gallagher and Leanne McGettigan delivering a 2-0 win over Bunscoil Lughaidh Naofa and a dazzling 8-1 victory over St. Clare’s NS with Gallagher claiming five. The Monaghan School would fill third place as they got points on the board at the start of the day at the expense of St. Clare’s NS, with Laura McGeown and Aisling Grimes both scoring in the 5-0 win.

The six Provincial finalists will now travel to Dublin for the National Finals which will be held in the Aviva Stadium on Wednesday, May 30 (KO 11.30am). We would urge all participating schools to take the day off and travel to the Dublin finale to support their school in what should prove to be a phenomenal day for all involved, players and spectators alike.

It promises to be a fantastic fun filled family day with a “Player of the Tournament” accolade for each section, goodie bags and medals for ALL 192 participants as they’re all winners on the day!

Spectators will be entertained with a super day of action as well as face painting, samba drummers, a well-known DJ to play some great tunes to gear us up for the games and a chance for one special supporter to win an epic prize in the Young Sports Journalist competition. You’ll have to stay tuned on the day to see who will be crowned 2018 SPAR Cup Champions.

Galway & Mayo lead the way in Connacht Spar Primary 5s

Connacht Spar.jpg

The event saw 31,728 children participate this year. The competition has been running since the mid 1990’s, the event is more popular than ever with an impressive 1,528 schools involved in 2018.

The competition is run across six divisions, ensuring that schools of all sizes are catered for. Boys and girls are encouraged to play together but there is a separate competition for boys and girls dependent on school enrolment numbers.

This year saw two schools from both Mayo and Galway make the cut as well as qualifiers from Sligo and Roscommon. Flying the flag for Mayo in the Aviva will be the girls of Belcarra NS and St. John’s NS, Breaffy. Bawnmore NS and Oranmore NS will be the proud representatives of Galway. Alongside them representing Connacht will be our Sligo Champions, Ardkeeran NS and Roscommon Champions, Corrigeenroe NS.

SPAR ‘A’ Cup (Small Schools, boys/mixed teams)

Led by the impressive Owen Elding, Ardkeeran NS, Sligo battled past all challenges to book their place in the National Finals with victories against Gortletteragh NS, defending Champions Doorus NS and Lisaniskey NS. They could not defeat Straide NS however, who were not beaten on the day but drew three of their games to finish third. With victories over Gortletteragh and Lisaniskey NS, Doorus NS would ultimately claim the runners-up honours.

SPAR ‘B’ Cup (Medium Schools, boys/mixed teams)

The tribal roar of Bawnmore NS will be heard at the National Finals after the Galway school qualified in an efficient manner. After a clear 4-0 victory over St. Joseph’s NS, Boyle, the now-Connacht champions would then defeat all other opposition by a single goal. Their final victory against Ballyvary Central would leave their opposition in second place, as the Mayo school defeated Gaelscoil Liatroma 6-2 and St. Joseph’s NS, Boyle 3-1 to secure the placing.

SPAR ‘C’ Cup (Large Schools, boys/mixed teams)

The boys of Oranmore NS will raise the Galway banner as they enter the Aviva Stadium as Connacht Champions. Three games resulted in maximum points for the winners, with victories against their own ‘B’ team and the talented sides of Claremorris BNS and St. Patrick’s, Castlebar. Claremorris BNS would fill the place as runners-up as their 3-1 victory over St. Patrick’s and exciting 4-3 success against Oranmore NS ‘B’ left them clear on points.

SPAR Girls ‘A’ Cup (Small Schools, girls only)

There will be flags of yellow and blue flying in the Aviva Stadium as Corrigeenroe NS of Roscommon blitzed their group to claim Provincial honours. Their toughest challenge presented itself at the first obstacle as Scoil Realt Na Mara were reluctant to give them an easy three points and a single goal would separate them at the final whistle. Following the opener, the Roscommon side found proceedings much easier with a 3-1 victory over Meelickmore before heavy victories over Killinmumery NS and Woodford NS. Scoil Realt Na Mara took second place with an important victory over Woodford NS before victory over Killinmumery NS sealed their faith.

SPAR Girls ‘B’ Cup (Medium Schools, girls only)

They were so keen to play that Belcarra NS of Mayo arrived in Solar21 Park on Wednesday morning for Thursday’s event. Their eagerness still remained when they returned on the actual day and were undefeated in their four games. The day began with a 2-1 victory against Carrigallen NS before following up 3-1 against Cornafulla NS. Their biggest test came against Rathcormac NS but they successfully navigated through with a 2-0 result to win the Cup. Rathcormac NS would finish as runners-up as they defeated all but the Champions.

SPAR Girls ‘C’ Cup (Large Schools, girls only)

There was excitement, there was nerves and the teachers had their maths put to the test as Scoil Íde, defending Champions Scoil Róis and St. John’s NS, Breaffy all finished on nine points with the Mayo goals having the goals in their favour as they were declared Champions based solely on goal difference. With +10 on their record, they leapt above Scoil Íde on +8 and Scoil Rois on +7. It did not seem a likely result at the start of the day as the Galway girls of Scoil Róis defeated the eventual winners 3-1. St. John’s NS would pick their performance up from there on in and pick up points against Scoil íde and Scoil Ursula of Sligo before a tournament-winning performance against St. Angela’s as they won 8-1 and gave a huge boost to their goal difference.

Ireland U-17 primed for European Championship Finals

Colin O’Brien’s side go into the tournament as top seeds following an impressive qualification campaign that saw them win six games from six - all away from home.

This is the second year in succession the Under-17’s have played at the Finals, with last year’s quarter-final appearance the best yet since the tournament was regraded in 2000.

O’Brien can call on five players from last year’s edition in Croatia with team captain Nathan Collins, top scorer Adam Idah, Southampton defender Kameron Ledwidge, Wolves midfielder Callum Thompson and Aston Villa’s Tyreik Wright back for a second appearance at the Finals.

The Under-17 World Champions, England, host the tournament ahead of the 2019 competition being held in Ireland. Interest in the Republic of Ireland games has been unprecedented, with the second group game against Denmark and the third game against Bosnia & Herzegovina, both of which take place in St George’s Park, already selling out.

With 18 goals in six qualification matches, Ireland, Spain and Norway were the most profilic scorers on the road to England, all averaging three goals per game. Ireland forward Idah comes into the tournament as the top scorer in Europe, with his tally of eight goals putting the Corkman top of the charts.

Speaking ahead of the opening game, Ireland Head Coach Colin O’Brien was pleased with how preparations have gone to date. “Everything has gone really well so far. We are ready to embrace the challenge of the first game,” he said.

“Belgium will be a formidable outfit, they have had a very strong youth development structure and system within their country for the last number of years – you can see that in some of the players they have produced. They’ll be a very possession based team, will have a lot of pace throughout and will have a little bit about them on the counter attack as well. I think it will be a very good game between two really good teams.”

With the close proximity of the tournament to Ireland and the large Irish community based in the UK, demand for tickets has been high, with Irish fans expected to turn out in big numbers.

“We know how good the Irish support can be. It will be great to get that this week as we will need it. These tournaments are all about the three games in the group to start. They’ll all pose different challenges and any extra support we can get that will help us will be very much appreciated,” O’Brien added.

Defeat for Ireland in U17 EURO opener

The Republic of Ireland Under 17’s got their European Under 17 Championship campaign off to a disappointing start as they went down 2-0 to Belgium at Loughborough University Stadium.

Goals in either half from Sekou Sidibe and Yorbe Vertessen ensured a clinical Belgian side claimed the three points.

Ireland opened the brighter but fell behind in the 34th minute when Sidibe slotted home the rebound after Nicolas Raskin’s initial effort came back off the crossbar.

Adam Idah called Nick Shinton into action in the Belgian goal on a number of occasions in the second period. The Ireland forward was denied in the 52nd minute when he got on the end of a long ball from Max Murphy.

Idah was frustrated again by Shinton eight minutes later as the Belgian keeper tipped the Corkman’s effort around the post. From the resulting corner Nathan Collins headed inches wide as Ireland continued to push for an opening.

Disaster was to strike though for Colin O’Brien’s side with 12 minutes remaining when Yorbe Vertessen was quickest to a rebound to put the Belgians into a lead they would not relinquish.

Next up for Ireland is a crucial clash with Denmark on Tuesday in St George’s Park.

Celebrating their 75th anniversary, the Dublin District Schoolboys' League wanted to put on a show and that is exactly what they did with some of the best clubs in Europe represented over the May Bank Holiday weekend.

Ultimately, Bayern Munich (pictured above with the legendary Fran Ray) were the victors, but each of the teams involved - including the DDSL selection - can be proud of their performances in what was a thrilling tournament.

"It was a great weekend. Thanks to all of the volunteers who helped out in any small way. The core of the volunteers who were here over the weekend put in sterling work," said DDSL chairman Pat Dempsey.

"The FAI National Training Centre is outstanding. The facilities are as good as anywhere in Europe, according to the coaches from the clubs who were here."

U17 EURO: Ireland set for sold out showdown with Denmark

U17TeamLineUp.png

Colin O'Brien's side come into the game off the back of their first defeat of the season, a 2-0 reversal against Belgium on Saturday.

Last season's quarter final appearance was Ireland's best finish in this competition, and with an opening group game defeat in 2017 O'Brien knows that Group C is still very much alive.

"Preparations have gone well. Most of the players had a recovery day yesterday. The full squad trained today and every player is fully prepared for the task at hand tomorrow. We've got to be positive in our approach and try and get something out of the game," he said.

"We were massively disappointed with the result on Saturday but when you put the game in perspective we performed really well in periods and created good chances. The players know they need to take those now and we're all looking forward to the Denmark game."

Denmark opened their campaign on Saturday with a 3-2 defeat against Bosnia & Herzegovina. A result tomorrow will put Ireland right in contention for a quarter final place ahead of Friday's final group game with Bosnia & Herzegovina.

"There are still six points on offer and there are still two places available to get out of the group. We've got to believe in the way we play, everybody has got to stay positive, stay part of the group and everybody has got to perform to the level we know we can achieve. We did create chances in game 1, and if we do that tomorrow I'm sure we'll convert them," the Ireland Head Coach emphasised.

"Denmark will be very good opposition. They have a very European style of play, very possession based. They can be expansive at times, they like to press high and have some good technical players. They'll be formidable but we've a good squad of players, we believe in ourselves and we're aiming to get something out of the game."

Live updates of the game will be available on FAI.ie along with extensive coverage across the FAI's social media channels.

Ireland got their Under 17 European Championship campaign right back on track this afternoon with a crucial win over Denmark at St George’s Park thanks to an early goal from Troy Parrott.

Ireland came flying out of the blocks and went ahead in just the fourth minute. Sean Brennan expertly switched the play to find Adam O’Reilly in space. O’Reilly found Troy Parrott out wide, the Tottenham Hotspur forward then cut inside and drove a right footed strike past Daniel Andersen in the Danish goal.

The second half started lively once again with two clear cut chances for Ireland. First Adam Idah and then Troy Parrott both went close to extending the lead but both efforts went narrowly over the crossbar.

Ultimately it was the early goal that was decisive as Ireland head into a final group game on Friday against Bosnia & Herzegovina with it all to play for.

Republic of Ireland: Corcoran; Ledwidge, McEntee; Collins ©, Connell; Knight, Brennan (Coffey 41), O’Reilly (McEneff 66); Wright (Thompson 58), Idah, Parrott.

Denmark: Andersen; Lassen (Sorensen 53), Jensen, Anker, Rafn Petersen (Andersen 65); Christensen, Frendrup, Isaksen, Pedersen, Rose-Villadsen; Brajanac (Rimmen 53).

Referee: Zbynek Proske (CZE)
