FAI celebrate Europe Day

EU Flag.jpg

Both the Football Association of Ireland and Welsh social enterprise, Vi-Ability are marking the occasion by proudly flying the EU flag on both sides of the Irish sea. Both organisations are currently united in benefitting from European funding designed to create social enterprises in disadvantaged communities in Ireland and Wales via their cooperation in the “More than a Club” project.

The “More than a Club” project, is a cooperation between the Football Association of Ireland and Vi-Ability and is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The pilot project is supported by the Ireland Wales European Territorial Co-Operation programme, which is helping to strengthen collaboration between Ireland and Wales to address common economic and social challenges.

The project aims to develop new social enterprises aligned with four football clubs in Ireland and Wales, which will design, develop and deliver innovative social programmes centred around health, education and social inclusion.

Partner football clubs, Conwy Borough FC and Haverfordwest County in Wales and Irish counterpart clubs, Bohemian FC and Cork City FC will be delivering activities during the month of May to demonstrate how the EU funded Ireland-Wales programme is facilitating best practice and learning, with the key aim in addressing health, social inclusion and education in each of the club’s localities.

On Europe Day, Conwy hosted the newly formed “Picasso Club” which is working with local organisations, Conwy Connect and TAPE Community music and Film, to deliver arts classes to individuals with learning disabilities and mental health disorders. The programme is delivered every Tuesday, in the mornings and afternoons at Conwy Borough’s club house.

The group painted Welsh, Irish and European Flags, which have been displayed in the Club house, as well as formally raising the flags to celebrate this Day.

The benefits for the Individuals taking part in the programme at Conwy is endless and learners benefit in a variety of ways;

  • stimulation of social learning and communication skills in group projects
  • improvement of co-ordination and gross and fine motor skills
  • faster learning development through increased awareness of surroundings
  • improved use of perceptual skills and response to stimulation
  • increased awareness of different senses such as touch, sound, sight and smell.

Some of the group taking part in the Picasso club also benefit from the Walking Football sessions every Saturday, which are delivered at the club. In addition to the Picasso club and Walking Football, the club also hosts local Slimming world and promotes healthy activities to the women and men who attend, as well as being a multi-purpose venue for local organisations and members of the communities to use.

Kelly Davies, the project’s Head of Community and Founder of Vi-Ability commented, “We want Conwy Borough FC to become a focal hub of their community. We believe that because of the “More Than a Club” project, the footfall through the club’s doors has massively increased. The Club has been successful on the pitch and is making a huge impact in the community off the pitch and things are looking very bright beyond this pilot project. However, it requires local organisations and local people to work together in sustaining this work and it is our job to educate and provide opportunities for the people to grow and prosper.”

Similar social programmes have also been ongoing in Ireland with both Bohemian FC and Cork City FC delivering valuable initiatives such as Walking Football and the unique Football Transformation programme which supports primary school children with numeracy skills whilst also promoting health enhancing physical activity among the group. A football themed dementia support programme has also been ongoing in both regions and both the FAI and Vi-Ability are facilitating exchanged learning by comparing and sharing the experiences gained and the approaches used to engage their various service users as the project evolves across both regions.

Project manager in Ireland, Derek O’Neill said:

“EU day is a day to reflect on the opportunities that access to EU funding has facilitated. Both the FAI and Vi-Ability are delighted to have the opportunity to cooperate on such a valuable project as “More than a Club” which is not only promoting social good in both regions but is actually changing the lives of so many people for the better.”

FAI pays its respects to Arthur Fitzsimons

Inducted into the FAI Hall of Fame in 2009, the Dubliner enjoyed a long playing career that started at Shelbourne and included over 200 appearances for Middlesbrough before enjoying spells with Lincoln City, Mansfield Town, Crusaders and Drogheda.

Fitzsimons made his Ireland senior debut in a 3-0 win over Finland in Dalymount Park in September 1949. He would go on to earn another 25 caps and score seven goals over a 10-year period.

FAI CEO John Delaney paid tribute to Fitzsimons (pictured above alongside his memorabilia alcove in FAI HQ) and his contribution to Irish football.

"The name of Arthur Fitzsimons belongs on the list of great Irish football men. He grew up with Shelbourne in his blood and went on to play for them before his successful move to England," said Delaney.

"As an international player, Arthur was skilful, committed and capable of making an impact in big games, just like when he scored twice away to Netherlands in a famous 4-1 victory in 1956.

"Arthur was a proud League of Ireland man and maintained his connection to the domestic game throughout his career. After he finished playing, Arthur spent time in charge of Drogheda, Shamrock Rovers and a League of Ireland XI.

"We send our deepest condolences to Arthur's family and friends at this time and we will remember Arthur at an international game that is suitable for his family. He was a true gentleman."

JohnOShea_2016.jpg

It has been an amazing journey but I feel now is the right time to step aside for the next generation to enjoy the experiences I am so humbled to have been part of.

We have just passed the 20th anniversary of the Ireland Under 16s winning the UEFA European Championships in Scotland and it is fitting that the current U17 squad are now competing on the same stage. I still look back at that particular triumph as the real starting point for my international career. I’m sure the young lads making up Colin O’Brien’s squad will be loving every minute of the tournament; just like I did under Brian Kerr and the late Noel O’Reilly.

I always wanted to play as much as I could at senior level and to now have 117 caps has truly been an honour.

There have been many highlights, such as leading Ireland out as captain, featuring at two UEFA European Championships, and getting to share a pitch alongside so many committed and talented players over the years.

It is a similar sentiment with regard to my managers at international level – Mick McCarthy, Brian Kerr, Steve Staunton, Don Givens, Giovanni Trapattoni, Noel King, and Martin O’Neill, they placed their trust in me and I hope that I paid them back in a small way by always giving everything on the pitch.

I would also like to acknowledge the support I have always received from Sunderland and, prior to that, Manchester United, in particular, Sir Alex Ferguson who is in my thoughts at the moment - get well soon Boss!

I’ve never taken anything in life for granted and the passing in the last year of my Dad, Jim, and my friend & team-mate Liam Miller has shown me that every moment in life (not just football) should be cherished.

I have certainly cherished my international career, it will be emotional walking out for the final time in front of the Ireland supporters. But it is now time to say thank you and allow others to lead the team forward, it’s been an amazing honour to wear our green shirt.

I would like to thank my family especially, my Mam, Mary, and brother Alan, who have given me nothing but support over the years, my friends, my underage coaches, especially at Ferrybank and Bohemians (Waterford), my schools Ferrybank BNS and De La Salle college, my team-mates, every staff member who has helped me through the years, my managers, and, most importantly, the Ireland supporters – it was always a real privilege to play in front of you!

To my wife, Yvonne, I thank you for your constant support, and to my kids, Alfie and Ruby, we can look forward to watching Ireland games together as supporters.

John O’Shea

After 22 years of representing my country (17 at senior level) it is with great sadness & joy that I will be pulling on the Republic of Ireland jersey for the last time on the 2nd of June in the Aviva Stadium.

FAI pays tribute to John O'Shea upon retirement

One of only six senior men's players to reach 100 caps, O'Shea made his senior debut against Croatia at the old Lansdowne Road in 2001 and has played for Ireland in every calendar year since then.

An underage star, who helped the Ireland Under 16s win the UEFA European Championships in 1998, O'Shea went on to captain his country 17 times and appear at both EURO 2012 and EURO 2016.

Ireland manager Martin O'Neill saluted O'Shea by saying: "John has had a great career internationally and played at the very top at club level with Manchester United, where he won a lot of trophies.

"For any player to get over 100 caps is a magnificent feat and he can be very proud of that achievement. I will always remember John's goal away to Germany in Gelsenkirchen. He doesn't score too many goals so that made it even more special.

"I wish John the very best for the future and I'm sure he will become an excellent coach. And if he wants to I'm sure he has the capabilities of becoming a manager too."

FAI CEO John Delaney believes history will remember O'Shea as one of Ireland's greatest ever servants and that he deserves to be lauded for his performances as much as for his longevity.

"We have been very fortunate to have had some truly outstanding servants pull on the Republic of Ireland jersey and John O'Shea is most definitely one of those. When you watched him play it was clear to see how much it meant to him to be representing his country and that kind of commitment inspired players and supporters across many generations," said Delaney.

"A proud Waterford man, who was given a great introduction to football by Ferrybank and Waterford Bohemians, John always gave everything for Ireland and that is evidenced by the fact that he played international football for 17 consecutive years. That is a remarkable achievement and explains why he has always been a firm favourite amongst the Ireland supporters.

"John is one of the most decorated Irish players of the modern era due to his tremendous success with Manchester United, but he will be known more for his leadership - on and off the pitch. Whether it was with Sunderland or Ireland, John led by example and others followed. Just like his father, Jim, who was a gentleman, John has and always will be a passionate supporter of Irish football.

"We will pay tribute to John at the United States game on June 2. I hope the Ireland supporters will turn out in force to give a deserved send-off to one of the most committed players ever to pull on the green jersey."

O'Shea started 111 of his 117 senior appearances - winning 46 of them - and appeared in six UEFA European Championship games. He is currently the third most capped men's player behind Shay Given and Robbie Keane.

Cork schools impress in Munster SPAR Primary 5s

The event saw 31,728 children participate this year. The competition has been running since the mid 1990’s, the event is more popular than ever with an impressive 1,528 schools involved in 2018.

This year saw four schools from Cork make the cut as well as qualifiers from Clare and Tipperary. Flying the flag for Cork in the Aviva will be Trafask NS, Scoil Íosagáin Aghada, Glasheen BNS and the girls of Clogheen Kerry Pike NS. Alongside them representing Munster will be our Clare Champions, Crusheen NS and Tipperary Champions, St. John the Baptist GNS, Cashel.

SPAR ‘A’ Cup (Small Schools, boys/mixed teams)

From the West of the County, Cork’s Trafask NS, Bantry saw past all worthy challengers to see themselves through to the Nationals. In their opening encounter with Cahir NS, Kenmare a brace of goals from Jack Crowley proved crucial in a 4-2 victory over the Kerry side. They clinched top rank in the following encounter with Burncourt NS, Cahir of Tipperary with Ben O’Sullivan’s hat-trick the highlight of the 4-1 win. They marched on to a semi-final with the Limerick based St. James NS, Cappagh where they demonstrated their strength in depth as Tom O’Connor was the star, scoring both goals for his school in the 2-1 victory.

Their opposition in the final would be previous national finalists, Annagh NS, Milton Malbay from Clare. In the lead up to the clash, they defeated St. James NS, Cappagh and took a point off of Waterford school, Dunhill NS before beating Burncourt NS 3-2 in the last four. In the final, Trafask hit top gear and put six past their opposition with O’Sullivan and O’Connor again on the scoresheet along with Seán O’Shea and the double scoring Tommy O’Sullivan.

SPAR ‘B’ Cup (Medium Schools, boys/mixed teams)

From West to East, there will be plenty of cheers going across the county of Cork as Scoil Íosagáin, Aghada sealed their place in the Aviva Stadium. Their provincial journey began with a dominant display against Kerry side Scoil Naomh Pádraig Measc, Caherleaheen. Seán Ó Callaghan and Jack Broderick Flynn would each net twice in the 5-0 victory. They would step onto the pitch next against Upperchurch NS, Thurles. The Tipperary side would suffer the same fate as their Kingdom counterparts and were on the end of a 5-0 defeat with Broderick-Flynn demonstrating his developing talents by netting a hat-trick. Oola NS of Limerick were the semi-final opposition and it required a step-up from the Cork boys, but they managed to overcome their opponents with Broderick Flynn netting again and Ben Cashman scoring twice in the 3-2 win.

Killaloe BNS would await them in the final. They were dominant in the group stages, brushing aside the challenges of Oola NS and Educate Together NS, Waterford. They would narrowly see past Upperchurch NS by a single goal. However, glory at provincial level proved to be a step too far as Scoil Íosagáin were devastating going forward scoring six times, divided equally among O’Callaghan, Broderick Flynn and Cashman.

SPAR ‘C’ Cup (Large Schools, boys/mixed teams)

The bright lights of Cork City won’t be left out of the celebrations as Glasheen BNSbooked their place in the National Finals. Their sole group game saw them face St. John’s the Baptist BNS of Cashel and Ryan O’Connell and Evan Morgan both hit doubles in the 4-1 victory. Their semi-final encounter saw them face Waterford school St. Declan’s NS. Morgan would hit a hat-trick in the 4-0 win and advance to the final where by coincidence it was St. John’s the Baptist that awaited them once more. Morgan would round off an excellent day for himself individually with a hat-trick in the 4-2 success.

SPAR Girls ‘A’ Cup (Small Schools, girls only)

The Banner County will be singing proudly on the National stage as Crusheen NS qualified for the big stage. Victories over Croagh NS, Rathkeale and Ballyfacey NS saw them through to the semi-finals. They would face Kilgarvan Central School and following an intense competitive battle, they prevailed by three goals to two. In the final, they would face their Limerick foes, Croagh NS, once more. After twenty minutes of play and the scores tied at 1-1, extra time was necessary. They showed great determination to take the lead in the additional period. With the clock ticking down, they had to show resolve to keep out Croagh NS before clinching it late on to run out 3-1 winners.

SPAR Girls ‘B’ Cup (Medium Schools, girls only)

Each end of Cork will be represented as Clogheen Kerry Pike NS from the North of the County progressed. They faced difficult challenges in the group stage opening their campaign with a draw with Faha NS of Kerry. They then met Corville NS, Roscrea in a group decider. In an exciting clash, Clogheen Kerry Pike NS got the better of their Tipperary counterparts in a 2-1 victory. The knockouts proved to be plainer sailing on paper with a 7-1 victory over Piltown NS. In the final, they were opposed by Ballingarry NS of Limerick. Their passage to the final saw them take maximum points from Piltown NS and Kilmurry NS before defeating Corville NS 2-1 in the semi-final. However, their 100% record for the day was wiped away by Clogheen Kerry Pike NS who hit them for six in a 6-0 win.

SPAR Girls ‘C’ Cup (Large Schools, girls only)

Although their boys counterparts in Cashel fell short in their respective final, the girls ofSt. John the Baptist GNS booked their place in the final four. In the group phase, they laid a 6-1 defeat upon Holy Cross Mercy, Killarney. In the group finale to decide top billing, it ended in a 2-2 draw between St. John’s and St. Columba’s GNS. By virtue of the goal conceded against Holy Cross Mercy, an inferior goal difference meant that the Tipperary side would face Clare rivals Holy Family Senior School, Ennis. They progressed to the final where they faced St. Columba’s GNS once again. The Douglas based school had swept aside An Modhscoil in the semi-finals 6-0 and were brimming with confidence going into the final showdown. However, St. John the Baptist made sure it would be their day and pulled through 2-1.

The six Provincial finalists will now travel to Dublin for the National Finals which will be held in the Aviva Stadium on Wednesday, May 30 (KO 11.30am). We would urge all participating schools to take the day off and travel to the Dublin finale to support their school in what should prove to be a phenomenal day for all involved, players and spectators alike.

It promises to be a fantastic fun filled family day with a “Player of the Tournament” accolade for each section, goodie bags and medals for ALL 192 participants as they’re all winners on the day!

Spectators will be entertained with a super day of action as well as face painting, samba drummers, a well-known DJ to play some great tunes to gear us up for the games and a chance for one special supporter to win an epic prize in the Young Sports Journalist competition. You’ll have to stay tuned on the day to see who will be crowned 2018 Champions.

Cheer on the schools from your classroom or office chair if you can’t make the trip to Dublin and follow the progress on the FAI Schools Facebook and Twitter pages (@faischools)

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill has announced a provisional squad for the friendly games against Celtic (May 20), France (May 28) and United States (June 2).

Speaking at the SPAR Primary 5s Leinster Finals in Navan, O'Neill revealed that veteran defender John O'Shea would be leading Ireland out for the final time at the Three International Friendly against United States on Saturday, June 2 in Aviva Stadium.

The three friendly games act as the final preparation ahead of the UEFA Nations League opener away to Wales on September 6. O'Neill has made space in his squad for three players (Matt Doherty, Declan Rice & Scott Hogan) who made their debuts in the recent friendly against Turkey.

Graham Burke is the latest player from the SSE Airtricity League to be called up to the squad, following on from the previous call ups for the Dundalk trio of Andy Boyle, Daryl Horgan and Gary Rogers.

Also receiving their first senior call-ups are Peterborough United goalkeeper Conor O'Malley, Millwall midfielder Shaun Williams, and Preston North End forward Callum Robinson.

A number of players miss out due to injury, including Robbie Brady (knee), James McCarthy (broken leg), Jonny Hayes (ankle) and Aiden McGeady (ankle). Burnley forward Jonathan Walters returns after a long injury lay-off.

Some players will drop out of the squad after the Celtic game on Sunday, May 20 in Celtic Park, while others will only report into camp ahead of the trip to Paris to take on France on Monday, May 28 in Stade de France and the home game against the United States on June 2.

U17 EURO: Ireland ready for Bosnian showdown

Ireland U17 Team Photo.png

Ireland currently sit second in the Group, ahead of Bosnia on goal difference, with Colin O’Brien’s side guaranteed a quarter final place with either a win or a draw.

A defeat for Ireland will see the Bosnians take their place in Monday’s last eight clash with Group D winners Netherlands.

Ireland and Bosnia & Herzegovina are no strangers to each other having met at the same stage of last year’s competition – Ireland running out 2-1 winners that day thanks to goals from Adam Idah and Rowan Roache.

Speaking ahead of the game, Head Coach Colin O’Brien was pleased with the position of his side going into the final group game.

“We’ve had two days recovery since game two, we were back on the training field today with everybody available. It was a really good session, just a little bit of preparation left now ahead of the final game against Bosnia. We’re in a great position, we spoke before to tournament about making sure everything was alive for game three and we’ve done that,” the former Cork City man said.

Ireland come into this game off the back of a 1-0 win over Denmark in St George’s Park on Tuesday, with O’Brien taking plenty of positives from his team’s display.

“We limited the opposition’s goalscoring opportunities and made the better chances ourselves. It was a really good team performance and something we’ve got to carry into game three now,” O’Brien added.

Bosnia opened their campaign with an impressive late win over Denmark with O’Brien knowing a tough task awaits on Friday.

“They are fighters, they’ll play right to the end, they have a never say die attitude and they have a couple of quality players so if you don’t prepare right they’ll hurt you.”

The sponsorship will see Maldron Hotels - who have 14 key locations around the country - support the Emerging Talent Programme and will provide funding for coaching, training and kit for players.

In existence since 2006, the Emerging Talent Programme is the entry point to the FAI's Elite Player Pathway as it brings the best players from 32 schoolboy leagues together for specialised sessions.

With 12 regional centres of excellence around the country, the Emerging Talent Programme offers weekly training, detailed coaching and developmental support to players as they start out on their journey along the Elite Player Pathway.

Graduates of the programme have gone on to forge successful careers in the game with 11 players earning caps for the Republic of Ireland men's senior team, while 19 players in the U17 squad currently competing at the UEFA European Championships came through the programme.

FAI CEO John Delaney welcomed the partnership by saying: "The Emerging Talent Programme has proved to be hugely successful for the development of elite players, so it is fantastic to have the backing of Maldron Hotels for such a worthwhile initiative.

"When you consider that over 350 players who have been involved with the Emerging Talent Programme have been capped at underage level for the Republic of Ireland, it shows just how pivotal the programme is to nurturing the stars of tomorrow.

"We look forward to working closely with Maldron Hotels over the coming years to promote Irish football all around the country and, hopefully, celebrate the emergence of the next Robbie Brady."

Maldron Hotels CEO Stephen McNally said: "Maldron Hotels is delighted to sponsor this hugely successful programme for the next three years. Young talent needs structure and opportunity to excel and this programme benefits young people from communities all over Ireland, providing wonderful experiences and opportunities to grow and develop their talents."

Dublin schools star in Leinster SPAR Primary 5s

The event saw 31,728 children participate this year. The competition has been running since the mid 1990’s, the event is more popular than ever with an impressive 1,528 schools involved in 2018.

This year saw an impressive three schools from Dublin make the cut as well as qualifiers from Carlow, Offaly and Wexford.

Flying the flag for Dublin in the Aviva will be Gaelscoil Chulain Dolcain, Scoil Assaim, Raheny and reigning National Champions Our Lady of Good Counsel GNS, Johnstown. Alongside them representing Leinster will be our Carlow starlets, Rathoe NS, Offaly dynamos Clonlisk NS and Wexford legends St. Fintan’s NS.

Republic of Ireland Senior International Manager Martin O’Neill was on hand in Navan to present the silverware to the winners and runners-up alongside Willie O’Byrne, Managing Director, SPAR Ireland.

SPAR ‘A’ Cup (Small Schools, boys/mixed teams)

There was victory for the Midlands as Clonlisk NS of Offaly took another step in their first ever time entering the competition, to lifting national gold. In a group that went right down to the wire between three teams, it was the Offaly school that emerged as victors following a thumping 12-2 victory over Dublin side, St. Mary’s NS. This ended the hopes of Scoil Naomh Brid who had destiny in their own hands in the final round after defeating the eventual winners 2-1. However a 4-2 defeat to Scoil Seosamh Naomtha brought all three sides on to six points following Clonlisk’s 5-4 win over the Meath opposition in the first round. Goal difference was the deciding factor and on this occasion favoured the boys from Offaly.

SPAR ‘B’ Cup (Medium Schools, boys/mixed teams)

D'éirigh le Gaelscoil Chluain Dolcain i Roinn B. The Fairview-based Irish-speaking school were dominant in their contests, only dropping points to Athboy side O’Growney’s NS in a 1-1 draw. Either side of that stalemate, they inflicted 7-0 defeats upon Scoil Bhride, Milltown and Gaelscoil an Inbhir Mhóir. Scoil Bhride were the first victims in the opening game but they managed to settle into the competition from there on in and pipped Athboy NS to the runner-up spot with a 5-3 victory in the final game.

SPAR ‘C’ Cup (Large Schools, boys/mixed teams)

It was another victory for Dublin in the large schools section as Scoil Assaim of Raheny took no prisoners as they earned maximum points from the three ties. A 7-0 win over Bishop Foley National School instilled plenty of confidence within the side. This confidence proved crucial as they battled past Bunscoil Buachaillí Réalt na Mara and Scoil Ui Riada in consecutive 3-2 victories. The Meath school, Réalt na Mara, took the second spot with a 2-1 victory over Scoil Ui Riada in the opening round proving decisive in the final tallies.

SPAR Girls ‘A’ Cup (Small Schools, girls only)

With the current Women’s National League Champions hailing from Wexford, it is no surprise to see that the success is inspiring future generations to aspire to National success as St. Fintan’s National School claimed the provincial honours. The day began for them with a rousing 7-0 victory over Good Shepherd NS. They maintained their form with a 2-0 win over Scoil Chiarain Naofa and went into a winner-takes-all showdown with Louth school Bellurgan NS in the final round, winning out 3-1.

SPAR Girls ‘B’ Cup (Medium Schools, girls only)

The South East were again dictating matters in the girls competitions as Carlow sideRathoe National School booked their place in the Aviva Stadium at the end of May. They claimed an unbeaten record from their performances with a 3-1 victory over Scoil Cholmcille and a 5-0 win over Kilkenny Schools Project led them into their final group showdown with Bracken ETNS. In a thrilling game with the Dublin side, Rathoe came out the better of a 7-goal game. Scoil Cholmcille managed to steal the runners-up spot from Dublin side Bracken ETNS with their 4-0 victory, poking them a goal in front on goal difference after the head-to-head was null and void following the 3-3 draw between the sides earlier in the day.

SPAR Girls ‘C’ Cup (Large Schools, girls only)

Returning to the Aviva Stadium will be the 2017 SPAR Girls ‘C’ Cup winners, Our Lady of Good Counsel GNS. The Johnstown stars once again claimed provincial honours with a fantastic display throughout. Teachers David O’Connor and Mark Barry were welcoming back an experienced trio in Liadh Burns, Ella Moriarty and Lillymae Coyne to the panel. These players were vital in their success story in 2017 and proved equally important this afternoon. Two 4-1 victories and a 3-1 victory will see the Dublin side attempt to repeat fate when they cruised through the National Finals. Offaly newbies St. Philomena’s NS eventually took second place with Scoil Mhuire, Newtownforbes falling short in their bid to claim silver medals with a 2-1 defeat to third placed Scoil Mhuire gan Smál NS.

The first game of the day sees Limerick's Pike Rovers face Wexford's North End United at 2pm in the FAI New Balance Junior Cup Final.

Pike Rovers are playing in their second final in three years, and are looking for their first win in the Aviva Stadium, after losing to Sheriff YC in the decider in 2016. North End United could make history by becoming the first side from Wexford to win the title.

A new name will be added to the FAI New Balance Intermediate Cup as Dublin's Firhouse Clover face Kildare's Maynooth University Town at 5pm.

The two Leinster Senior League teams are both in their infancy. Firhouse Clover were founded in 2007, while Maynooth Town and Maynooth University only formed their relationship in recent years.

Both matches will be decided on the day. If the Junior Cup Final finishes level after 90-minutes, two ten-minute periods of extra-time will be required. Extra-time in the Intermediate Cup Final will be played over two 15-minute periods if needed. If either game is level after extra-time, they will go to penalties.

North End United became the first team from Wexford to win the FAI New Balance Junior Cup after a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win over Limerick's Pike Rovers.

Captain Paul Murphy opened the scoring for the eventual winners in the first-half from the penalty spot after he was fouled in the box. Pike Rovers sent the game to extra-time with a second-half strike from Steven McGann.

A further 20-minutes of extra-time was unable to separate the sides resulting in a penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Lee Walker and defender Gary Delaney proved the heroes for the winners in the shootout.

Walker saved Pike Rovers' third penalty from Colin Daly, before Delaney's spot-kick won the title for the Wexford side.

A 92nd-minute minute equaliser in the FAI New Balance Intermediate Cup Final from Maynooth University Town's Darragh Reynor proved the turning point in a dramatic second match.

Carl Forsyth gave Firhouse Clover a second-half lead, and looked on course to give the Dublin side their first Intermediate Cup Final win, before man of the match Reynor's goal sent the game to extra-time.

Maynooth University Town used their man advantage in that period after Firhouse Clover's Michael McLoughlin was sent off late in normal time.

Substitutes Tommy Illunga and Youseff Belhout scored in the first half of extra-time, before Illunga scored again in the second half to cap off a dramatic win.

In a historic day, both North End United and Maynooth University Town added their names to the FAI New Balance Junior and Intermediate Cups for the first time.

U17 EURO: Ireland's young guns set for Quarter Final

Ireland U17s

Ireland’s young guns secured qualification on Friday with a 2-0 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina. That result gave Colin O’Brien’s team back-to-back wins following Tuesday’s 1-0 win against Denmark.

It is the second year in succession Ireland have made the quarter final stage, with O’Brien’s side going down 1-0 to eventual Under 17 World Champions, England, at this stage in Croatia last May.

“Preparations have gone well. We’ve had two days since the last group game. The day after was very much recovery. Post game, we moved base (to St George’s Park) and that freshened everything up. We trained this morning and everyone is ready and looking forward to the game against the Dutch,” Ireland Head Coach Colin O’Brien said following the final training session before the game.

Netherlands come into the game having topped Group D with three wins from three, with O’Brien knowing his opponents come into the game in fine form.

“They are a top class outfit,” he said. “Already in the tournament they are scoring goals. They haven’t conceded and have beaten two top tier teams in Spain and Germany. They’ll be full of confidence so we’ll have to have our plan. It will be an 80 or 84 minute game and we’ll make sure we give it our very best.”

Ireland recovered from an opening game defeat to Belgium to pick up maximum points against both Denmark and Bosnia & Herzegovina with the Boys in Green coming into the game full of belief.

“We have a bit of confidence now from winning two games. I said after the first game that I didn’t feel we should have lost – we should have got a point out of it. That didn’t knock the players’ confidence, they learned from it. This group have good character and they’ve shown that by bouncing back and getting six points.

“It is knock out football now, we’re very aware of that. That will throw up a few different situations no doubt tomorrow night. But, it’s a great position to be in, already it is a fantastic achievement and we’ve got to make sure we leave everything on the pitch tomorrow night,” O’Brien added.

RTE will show the game live on RTE 2 television and online on the RTE Player. Viewers outside of the Republic of Ireland will be able to watch the game live on UEFA.com. Kick off in Chesterfield is 19:00.

FAI working to increase female participation in coaching

LauraHeffernan_Wexford.jpg

A number of female coaches, such as Eileen Gleeson, Laura Heffernan (pictured above), and Sharon Boyle, have made significant strides in women's football, but the FAI wants to open up as many opportunities as possible to female coaches.

In order to do that, participation levels need to increase. It is why the FAI want to get feedback from female coaches through an online survey and review every area in which they can aid the development of all female coaches.

CLICK HERE TO FILL OUT THE FEMALE COACHES SURVEY

FAI Head of Women's Football Sue Ronan knows all about climbing the coaching ladder, having completed her UEFA Pro Licence, and she believes that the future is bright for those wanting to progress in their careers.

"Increasing the number of female coaches working in football is a key pillar of the FAI Women's Strategic Plan. Yet, research conducted by both UEFA and FIFA has shown that there are a number of barriers preventing women from booming a coach. With that in mind, we are introducing initiatives such as a Coaches Survey and Regional Workshops for coaches working in women's football," said Ronan.

"Our aim in the FAI, in cooperation with UEFA, is to help develop the female coaches in our database, encourage as many newcomers as possible to begin their coaching education, and to find opportunities for them within the game.

"With women's football continuing to grow and improve, there are more opportunities than ever before available for talented coaches to work at various levels. The FAI wants to assist all females aspiring to progress with their coaching and their input is crucial."

A number of female-only coaching courses will be staged around the country over the coming months, while there are two entry-level courses currently on offer in Dublin - click on the links below for more information.

In the last four, Ireland were pitted against top-seeds Hungary, and reached the final with a penalty shootout win after a scoreless draw. Matthew Kearney was the hero, scoring the decisive kick.

In the Final, Ireland came up against Poland once more, but the result was the same as in their opening game, as the hosts ran out 1-0 winner to win the third IBSA Blind Football Euro Challenge Cup
